The Protoevangelium ("the First Gospel") : The Protoevangelium ("the First Gospel") Gen 3:15: "And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed; …”. Gen 3:15 is "unusual": God puts "enmity between [satan] and the woman", instead of between "satan and the man" (this is a male-dominated, patriarchal society). Eve Eve and satan Isaiah 7:14 : Isaiah 7:14 “Look! the virgin is with child and will give birth to a son whom they will call Immanuel..." Rogier van der Weyden, (1399/1400 - 1464). Mary's "other seed." As Christians, we are all the seed of Mary in a spiritual sense, and so she is our spiritual mother. Mary and satan Manifestations of Jesus Christ in his glory : Manifestations of Jesus Christ in his glory 1. INCARNATION 2. CANA GALILEA 3. DEATH ON A CROSS ON MOUNT CALVARY Mary plays an important role in the 3 moments. :  Lk 1, 26 ff Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the descendants of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. And coming in, he said to her, “Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with you." But she was very perplexed at this statement, and kept pondering what kind of salutation this was. The angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary; for you have found favor with God. "And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name Him Jesus. "He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David; and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and His kingdom will have no end." Mary said to the angel, "How can this be, since I am a virgin?" The angel answered and said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; and for that reason the holy Child shall be called the Son of God. "And behold, even your relative Elizabeth has also conceived a son in her old age; and she who was called barren is now in her sixth month. "For nothing will be impossible with God." And Mary said, "Behold, the handmaid of the Lord; may it be done to me according to your word." And the angel departed from her. Jesus' Incarnation St. Luke :  In a simple place To a simple girl Salutation Reaction of Mary Message Difficulty (I am a Virgin) A sign is given (not requested) Mary’s answer Jesus' Incarnation :  Mary is addressed as GRATIA PLENA Ke-jarit-o-mene Ephesians 1,6: χαριτος She calls herself: HANDMAID OF THE LORD (SLAVE). JPII, Redemptoris Mater, 10: According to the belief formulated in solemn documents of the Church, this "glory of grace" is manifested in the Mother of God through the fact that she has been "redeemed in a more sublime manner.“ By virtue of the richness of the grace of the beloved Son, by reason of the redemptive merits of him who willed to become her Son, Mary was preserved from the inheritance of original sin. kecaritwmenh :  The holy Virgin Mary is, truly and rightfully, the Mother of God (of faith) Theo-tokos Creed: Jesus Christ … was born of the Virgin Mary by the power of the Holy Spirit and became man. The Blessed Virgin Mary - Mother of God :  LESSONS FROM LUKE’S GOSPEL: Humility Generous answer to God Faith Full of grace The Blessed Virgin Mary - Mother of God On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there; and both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding. When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to Him, "They have no wine." And Jesus said to her, " Woman, what does that have to do with us? My hour has not yet come." His mother said to the servants, "Whatever He says to you, do it." Now there were six stone waterpots set there for the Jewish custom of purification, containing twenty or thirty gallons each. Jesus said to them, "Fill the waterpots with water." So they filled them up to the brim. And He said to them, "Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter." So they took it to him. When the headwaiter tasted the water which had become wine, and did not know where it came from ... This beginning of His signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory, and His disciples believed in Him. : On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there; and both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding. When the headwaiter tasted the water which had become wine, and did not know where it came from ... This beginning of His signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory, and His disciples believed in Him. St John Slide 21: -The focus is not on the married couple, but on Mary, Jesus, and the Apostles. -Mary notices the lack of wine, and cares, and looks for a solution: She asks Jesus. -Woman! Jesus refuses to do anything. -Mary insists, intercedes. -6oo litres of water became excellent wine. The first SEMION: sign. -The Apostles believed in him. Slide 22: -THEOLOGIAL MEANING: Christological (Jesus manifested his glory); Mariological (words to Jesus, and words to men: “Do whatever he tells you”); Prepares for the institution of Eucharist (Sacramental); Historical (in the sociological event of a wedding banquet: the moment the disciples believed in him). LESSON FROM JOHN’S GOSPEL : LESSON FROM JOHN’S GOSPEL Mary’s charity. She intercedes before God. Mediatrix. Faith of Mary. Obedience (Do whatever He tells you: the only words Mary addressed to men). Faith of the Disciples. St Augustine: Mary collaborates through her charity in the spiritual birth of all the faithful (Sancta Virgo, 6,6). Mediatrix of All Graces : Mediatrix of All Graces She shares in distributing graces, as Mediatrix of all graces. This truth too has been taught numerous times by a long series of Popes--every Pope from Leo XIII through John XXIII. Slide 25: John 19But standing by the cross of Jesus were His mother, and His mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus then saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He said to His mother, "Woman, behold, your son!" Then He said to the disciple, "Behold, your mother!" From that hour the disciple took her into his own household. (…) Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, " It is finished!" And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit. MOTHER OF CHRIST AND OUR MOTHER MOTHER OF MANKIND : The Apostles refused to be present during the Crucifixion. The Synoptics mention the other women, but not Mary. But John was the only Apostle present there. Mary reappears in the difficult moment, when she is most needed. St John plays with the expression “Time”. MOTHER OF MANKIND MOTHER OF THE CHURCH : MOTHER OF THE CHURCH On the floor of the Council, Pope Paul VI declared Mary Mother of the Church. This was not entirely new. Pius XII, in a message to the Marian Congress of Ottawa, Canada, on July 19, 1947 said: "When the little maid of Nazareth uttered her fiat to the message of the angel... she became not only the Mother of God in the physical order of nature, but also in the supernatural order of grace, she became the Mother of all, who... would be made one under the Headship of her Son. The Mother of the Head would be the Mother of the members." MOTHER OF THE CHURCH : MOTHER OF THE CHURCH LESSONS FROM CALVARY AND MARY: She is given to us as a Mother, by Jesus’ decision. Fortitude of Mary. Hope of Mary (“His kingdom will have no end”) AVODING SUPERFICIAL DEVOTION TO MARY : AVODING SUPERFICIAL DEVOTION TO MARY In his book, Crossing The Threshold of Hope, Pope John Paul II tells his readers: Totus Tuus (“I am completely yours O Mary”). This phrase is not only an expression of piety, or simply an expression of devotion. It is more. During the Second World War, while I was employed as a factory worker, I came to be attracted to Marian devotion. Thanks to Saint Louis of Montfort, I came to understand that true devotion to the Mother of God is actually Christocentric indeed, it is very profoundly rooted in the Mystery of the Blessed Trinity (Pope John Paul II, 1994). AVODING SUPERFICIAL DEVOTION TO MARY : AVODING SUPERFICIAL DEVOTION TO MARY Not just a sentimental inclination The Mother of God, Mary, is the new Eve, placed by God in close relation to Christ. Deeper Marian doctrine and devotion thanks to Vatican Council II (Lumen Gentium). AVODING SUPERFICIAL DEVOTION TO MARY : AVODING SUPERFICIAL DEVOTION TO MARY The first way-and the oldest-is tied to all the times during my childhood that I stopped before the image of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in the parish church of Wadowice. The tradition of the Carmelite scapular. Tradition of making pilgrimages to the shrine of Kalwaria Zebrzydowska (Marian and Christological), and the one of Jasna Góra (Evangelization of Poland). Attitude of total abandonment to Mary-his Totus Tuus. John Paul II AVODING SUPERFICIAL DEVOTION TO MARY : AVODING SUPERFICIAL DEVOTION TO MARY OCTOBRI MENSEENCYCLICAL OF POPE LEO XIIION THE ROSARY, 1891 Thus as no man goes to the Father but by the Son, so no man goes to Christ but by His Mother. The Queen of Heaven herself has granted an especial efficacy to this mode of supplication, for it was by her command and counsel that the devotion was begun and spread abroad by the holy Patriarch Dominic AVODING SUPERFICIAL DEVOTION TO MARY : AVODING SUPERFICIAL DEVOTION TO MARY Pope Paul VI, 1974, Marialis cultus, 28. Apostolic Exhortation, For the Right Ordering and Development of Devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary It is also necessary that exercises of piety with which the faithful honor the Mother of the Lord should clearly show the place she occupies in the Church: "the highest place and the closest to us after Christ.“ The active love she showed at Nazareth, in the house of Elizabeth, at Cana and on Golgotha--all salvific episodes having vast ecclesial importance--finds its extension in the Church's maternal concern that all men should come to knowledge of the truth (cf. 1 Tm. 2:4), in the Church's concern for people in lowly circumstances and for the poor and weak, and in her constant commitment to peace and social harmony, AVODING SUPERFICIAL DEVOTION TO MARY : AVODING SUPERFICIAL DEVOTION TO MARY Pope Paul VI, 1974, Marialis cultus. Apostolic Exhortation, For the Right Ordering and Development of Devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary … to encourage the restoration, in a dynamic and more informed manner, of the recitation of the Rosary, the practice of which was so strongly recommended by our predecessors and is so widely diffused among the Christian people. Rosary: suitability for fostering contemplative prayer--prayer of both praise and petition--and recalled its intrinsic effectiveness for promoting Christian life and apostolic commitment. Angelus. Liturgical Roman Calendar: Christ's Mother shares in the annual cycle of the mysteries of her Son. Ephesus (Turkey) : Ephesus (Turkey) Ephesus Ancient City, House of Virgin Mary, Artemis TempleBasilica of St John and around The Blessed Virgin Mary - Mother of God Slide 36: Ephesus Ancient City, House of Virgin Mary, Artemis TempleBasilica of St John and around The Blessed Virgin Mary - Mother of God Slide 37: Heresy NESTORIUS (in Greek: Νεστόριος; c. 386–c. 451) was Archbishop of Constantinople from 10 April 428 to 22 June 431. He objected to the popular practice of calling the Virgin Mary the "Mother of God" theotokos (in Greek, Θεοτόκος) ; he instead preached that "Mother of Christ" would be more fitting. The Blessed Virgin Mary - Mother of God Slide 38: The 3rd General Council of Ephesus (AD 431) condemned Nestorianism and upheld the traditional belief that Christ is one divine person (ie. the 2nd Person of the Holy Trinity) with two natures: therefore, it is correct for the BVM to be called "Mother of God" (theotokos or "God-bearer") as Jesus is God! The Catholic argument for the BVM’s divine motherhood can be stated thus: Premise 1: Jesus Christ is God. Premise 2: The BVM is the Mother of Jesus Christ. Mothers give birth to persons. Conclusion: Therefore, the BVM is the Mother of God. The Blessed Virgin Mary - Mother of God Slide 39: The Father gave the Immanuel –God with us- to the world, through the action of the Holy Spirit in her. -In Mary, the Holy Spirit accomplished the design of God. -Mary, full of the Holy Spirit, presents the Word to mankind. -Mary starts the communion of men with God. -Mary, ark of the Covenant. Mary, Temple of the Holy Spirit Mary, Temple of the Holy Spirit : Mary, Temple of the Holy Spirit The Ark of the Old Covenant was a kind of tabernacle or box (lined in and out with pure gold with angels on each side) which contained the Decalogue (or the Ten Commandments) and the bread of God (the manna), and the rod of Aaron cf. Heb 9:1-5, Exod 30:1-6, 1 Kgs 8:9, 2 Chr 5:10. Mary, Temple of the Holy Spirit : Mary, Temple of the Holy Spirit In the NT, the BVM became the Ark of the New Covenant because she bore in her womb Our Lord Jesus Christ, who is the Word (John 1:1) and the Heavenly Bread (John 6:51): The lining of gold compares to the BVM’s immaculate womb which beheld the fullness of God. The presence of St. Gabriel the Archangel at the Annunciation (Luke 1:26-38) fulfills the comparison of the angels of the first ark. The Shekinah which overshadowed the first ark (Exod 40:34-35) prefigured the Power of the Most High overshadowing the BVM (Luke 1:35). Mary, Temple of the Holy Spirit : Mary, Temple of the Holy Spirit The Fathers of the Church, who were steeped in the Bible, after prayerfully reflecting on the role of the Blessed Virgin Mary in salvation history, acclaimed her as the Ark of the Covenant. Pope Pius XII in Munificentissimus Deus, speaking of the Fathers, wrote:... some have employed the words of the Psalmist: "Arise, O Lord, and go into Thy resting place, Thou and the ark of Thy might" and have looked upon the Ark of the Covenant, built of incorruptible wood and places in the Lord's temple, as a type of the most pure body of the Virgin Mary, preserved and exempted from all corruption of the tomb and raised up to such glory in heaven.” Mary, Ark of the Covenant : Mary, Ark of the Covenant The privileges of the Blessed Virgin Mary : The privileges of the Blessed Virgin Mary 1. Perpetual Virginity 2. Immaculate 3. Assumption 4. Queenship of Mary BECAUSE OF BEING THE MOTHER OF GOD Slide 45: The All-powerful God could have sent His Son to be incarnate as Man in any one of the following ways: 1. God creates a human body for Jesus without the intervention of any human being. 2. God allows Jesus to be born of a human father and mother, ie. natural conception. 3. God sends Jesus to be born of a virgin. The Virgin Birth Slide 46: Matt 13:55: "This is the carpenter’s son, surely?" Luke 3:23: "When he began, Jesus was about thirty years old, being the son, as it was thought, of Joseph son of Heli" No mention of the virgin birth! … The Virgin Birth Slide 47: So what is the reason for the virgin birth - why not a "normal" and natural conception? CCC 488: "‘God sent forth his Son’, but to prepare a body for him, he wanted the free co-operation of a creature. For this, from all eternity God chose for the mother of his Son a daughter of Israel, a young Jewish woman of Nazareth in Galilee, ‘a woman betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary’: The Father of mercies willed that the Incarnation should be preceded by assent on the part of the predestined mother, so that just as a woman had a share in the coming of death, so also should a woman contribute to the coming of life." The Virgin Birth Slide 48: One of the reasons for the virgin birth is because the BVM would be playing a unique role in the whole scheme of Redemption, a role not shared even by St. Joseph. cf. CCC 511: "The Virgin Mary ‘co-operated through free faith and obedience in human salvation’ (LG 56). She uttered her yes ‘in the name of all human nature’ (St Thomas Aquinas, STh III, 30, 1). By her obedience she became the new Eve, mother of the living." Christ is referred to as "the New Adam" or "the Second Adam" in the NT, eg. Rom 5:14-19, 1 Cor 15:21-22 & 45-47. Boticelli The Virgin Birth Slide 49: St. Justin Martyr (c. AD 155): "[The Holy Scriptures teach us concerning Christ] that He became Man by the Virgin so that the course which was taken by disobedience in the beginning through the agency of the serpent, might be also the very course by which it would be put down. For Eve, a virgin and undefiled, conceived the word of the serpent, and bore disobedience and death. But the Virgin Mary received faith and joy when the angel Gabriel announced to her the glad tidings that the Spirit of the Lord would come upon her and the powers of the Most High would overshadow her, for which reason the Holy One being born of her would be called the Son of God. And she replied: ‘Be it done unto me according to thy word.‘ " (Dialogue With Trypho The Jew 100) Fra Angelico The Virgin Birth Slide 50: St. Irenaeus (c. AD 190): "Consequently, then, Mary the Virgin is found to be obedient, saying: ‘Behold, O Lord, your handmaid; be it done to me according to your word.’ Eve, however, was disobedient; and when yet a virgin, she did not obey... having become disobedient, was made the cause of death for herself and for the whole human race; so also Mary, betrothed to a man but nevertheless still a virgin, being obedient, was made the cause of salvation for herself and for the whole human race... Thus, the knot of Eve's disobedience was loosed by the obedience of Mary. What the virgin Eve had bound in unbelief, the Virgin Mary loosed through faith." (Against Heresies 3, 22, 4) The Annunciation Cologne School The Virgin Birth The parallels between Eve and the BVM are striking: : The parallels between Eve and the BVM are striking: The first Adam: responsible for us inheriting Original Sin, The Second Adam: brought us back to life, as St. Paul states very clearly in Rom 5:12, 1 Cor 15:21-22 Two Adams Two Eves, the first one who believed an evil angel and the second one who believed a good angel. The Church Fathers: "Death through Eve, life through Mary" . even though Eve and the BVM were not the ultimate causes of death and life, it was through their actions that death and new life entered the world. As Gen 3:20 declares, Eve is "mother of the living" in the physical sense, but in the New Covenant, the BVM is "Mother of the Living" in the spiritual sense since she is Mother of all Christians (cf. Rev 12:17). Perpetual virginity of Mary : Perpetual virginity of Mary Virginity: 2 dimensions, bodily and moral. 1. Physical integrity: before, during and after giving birth to Jesus Christ. 2. Moral: virtuous habit of perpetually preserving her virginity. Perpetual virginity of Mary : Perpetual virginity of Mary Holy Mary conceived her son, Jesus Christ, by the power and grace of the Holy Spirit, all the while maintaining her virginity. Is 7: 14: “a virgin shall conceive and shall bring forth a son.” Lk 1: 34-35. Annunciation. Mt 1:20. God revealed it to St Joseph. Compared to a sun beam going through glass without modifying it in any way. Perpetual virginity of Mary : Perpetual virginity of Mary AFTER THE BIRTH OF JESUS: Lk 1:34:“I do not know man”. Resolution to maintain her virginity. Lateran Council 649. Mary entrusted to John at the foot of the Cross, because there were no other children. Title of “ever Virgin” from the 4th Century, by the Fathers. Slide 55: On 8 December 1854, Pope Pius IX promulgated the following dogma: "The Most Holy Virgin Mary was, in the first moment of her conception, by a unique gift of grace and privilege of Almighty God, in view of the merits of Jesus Christ, the Redeemer of mankind, preserved free from all stain of original sin." (Ineffabilis Deus) The Immaculate Conception Slide 56: The BVM was conceived in the state of grace in the womb of St. Anne: all other human beings after Adam and Eve (except Our Lord, of course) were conceived in the state of original sin. The Immaculate Conception Slide 57: Gen 3:15: "And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed..." The BVM stands with Christ in a perfect and victorious enmity towards satan and his followers. However, the BVM’s victory over satan would not have been perfect if she had been under his domination by being born with the stain of original sin. The Immaculate Conception Slide 58: Luke 1:28: "Hail, full of grace!" (the greeting of St. Gabriel the Archangel to the BVM) Instead of addressing the BVM by name, the angel calls her "full of grace" as if this represented her proper name and expressed her characteristic quality. The Greek word for this is kecharitomene, which expresses the BVM’s endowment with grace to be of unique perfection, both intensively and extensively (ie. extending over her whole life beginning with her entry into the world). Luke 1:42: " [St. Elizabeth] gave a loud cry and said, ‘Of all women you are the most blessed, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.’" The Immaculate Conception Slide 59: Various Fathers and Saints in the Early Church appear to have taught the Immaculate Conception (implicitly, at any rate), eg. St. Ephrem, St. Augustine. IMMUNITY FROM SIN By a especial privilege of God. Even venial sin. De fide, implicitly defined. FULL OF GRACE= kecharitomene God prepares the instruments He is going to use. The Immaculate Conception Slide 60: IMMUNITY FROM SIN FREEDOM FROM CONCUPISCENCE (NO INCLINATION TO SIN) BUT SUBJECT TO SUFFERING AND PAIN. Mary accepted the Cross, Co-Redemptrix. Mary’s capacity to suffer was increased because of her holiness. Union to the sufferings of her Son. INCREASE IN GRACE AT THE INCARNATION AND DURING HER LIFE The Immaculate Conception ImmaculateConception : ImmaculateConception St Anselm’s view, following St Augustine, is that all men are born with original sin, including Mary. The mother of Jesus was only justified, purified from original sin, in the moment of the Annunciation. With her fiat, he says, she received the merits of Redemption because of her divine motherhood. (The doctrine of the Immaculate Conception of Mary will only be clear from the XIII Century) Doctrine of the Immaculate Conception : Doctrine of the Immaculate Conception St. And she replied: ‘Be it done unto me according to thy word.‘ " (Dialogue With Trypho The Jew 100) Doctrine of the Immaculate Conception : Doctrine of the Immaculate Conception 2 St. What the virgin Eve had bound in unbelief, the Virgin Mary loosed through faith." (Against Heresies 3, 22, 4) 3 Tertullian (c. AD 210): "[I]t was while Eve was still a virgin that the word of the devil crept in to erect an edifice of death. Likewise, though a Virgin, the Word of God was introduced to set up a structure of life. Thus, what had been laid waste in ruin by this sex, was by the same sex re-established in salvation. Eve had believed the serpent; Mary believed Gabriel. That which the one destroyed by believing, the other, by believing, set straight." (The Flesh of Christ 16, 5) So we see that 3 of the most important Fathers of the 2nd and 3rd century bore witness to the implication of the Gen 3:15 prophecy, that there would come a second woman, a second Eve, who would give birth to Christ while still a virgin. Luke 1:28: "Hail, full of grace!" Luke 1:42: " [St. Elizabeth] gave a loud cry and said, ‘Of all women you are the most blessed, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.’" Doctrine of the Immaculate Conception : Doctrine of the Immaculate Conception Pope Sixtus IV (1471-84): approved feast Pope Innocent VIII (1484-92): approved invocation to the Immaculate Virgin Mary. Council Trent (1545-63): elaborated doctrine of the original sin (but not applied to Mary). Pope Clement XI (1700-21) declared the precept of the feast day for the universal Church. Popes Pius V, Paul V (1605-21), Alexander VII (1655-67): with arguments and expressions that will be used by Pope Pius IX when he declared Dogma on the 8th December 1854: “all holy from the beginning of her existence”. Four years later, Our Lady appears in Lourdes, and says She is the Immaculate Conception (1858) Doctrine of the Immaculate Conception : Doctrine of the Immaculate Conception Pope Pius IX (8th December 1854) "The Most Holy Virgin Mary was, in the first moment of her conception, by a unique gift of grace and privilege of Almighty God, in view of the merits of Jesus Christ, the Redeemer of mankind, preserved free from all stain of original sin." (Ineffabilis Deus) Slide 66: On 1 November 1950, Pope Pius XII promulgated the dogma of the Assumption: "Mary, the immaculate perpetually Virgin Mother of God, after the completion of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into the Glory of Heaven." (Munificentissimus Deus) The Assumption Slide 67: The BVM was not the first person to be assumed into Heaven, the following people having had the privilege before her, ie. Enoch (cf. Gen 5:24 and Heb 11:5), Elijah (cf. 2 Kgs 2:10-12) and (possibly) Moses (cf. Jude 9 and Matt 17:1-8). The Assumption Slide 68: Conclusion of the previous definitions: The Assumption is the logical destiny of the BVM, she who is the Immaculate Conception and the Mother of God, and who had cooperated closely with Our Lord in the Redemption. The Assumption Slide 69: Rev 12:1: "Now a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman, robed with the sun, standing on the moon, and on her head, a crown of twelve stars." Some Fathers of the Church who wrote about the Assumption were St. Gregory of Tours, Pseudo-Modestus of Jerusalem, Germanus of Constantinople, Andrew of Crete, St. John Damascene and Theodore of Studion... The Assumption Mary’s glorification: the Queenship of Mary : Mary’s glorification: the Queenship of Mary Queen of the Universe Spiritual kingdom Omnipotent suppliant 1954, Pius XII instituted for the entire Church the feast day: August 22. Not a new truth. Ad Coeli Reginam. FATHERS: Lady and Queen. She is the mother of the KING.
