Recap of Dr. Marshall Goldsmith’s EAKeynote Presentation Presented by Mike Cilla EA University 2011 EA UNIVERSITY 1

Who is Marshall Goldsmith?Dr. Marshall Goldsmith is a world authority in helping successfulleaders get even better – by achieving positive, lasting change inbehavior: for themselves, their people and their teams. EA UNIVERSITY 2

Icebreaker (5-10mins)•Pick one behavior that you would like to change. Change in thisbehavior should make a significant, positive difference in yourlives.•Describe this behavior to randomly selected fellow participants.•This is done quite simply, such as, "My name is ______________,and I want to be a better __________________."•Ask for two suggestions for the future that might help you achievea positive change in your selected behavior•Only allowed to give ideas for the future.•Switch and restart the process EA UNIVERSITY 3

Themes from Dr. Goldsmith’s Keynote•Coaching & Leadership – coach to 120 CEOs, US NavyAdmirals/Army Generals, and Numerous Keynotes and Seminars•Engagement and Asking Active Questions – making a positivedifference for yourself and the world•Defining Success and Meaning in your personal andprofessional lives•Being Happy! EA UNIVERSITY 4

What does this mean to you?•You’re here at EA for a reason…intelligent, talented, creative, andmotivated!•But, what got you “here” won’t get you “there”… EA UNIVERSITY 5

What got you “here” won’t get you“there”…why’s that?•People have the potential to be their own best friends as well astheir own worst enemies•Key is identifying behaviors you want to change in order to be a betterperson•Execution is the only defense against staying stagnant!•Our default reaction in life is to resist change! EA UNIVERSITY 6

Where would you like to be?•You all are going to be working with a boss, co-workers, andclients/customers of some sort in your lives•We live in a social worldwhere we must learn to listen, and be receptive of how othersperceive us•We’re all trying to get better atsomething•Icebreaker exercise – opposite of feedback, focuses on behavior change EA UNIVERSITY 7

EngagementThe key to engagement is YOU… • It is not the company you work for • It is not the amount of compensation you receive • It is not controlled by external forcesTo take responsibility for your own engagement, ask yourself, “Did I do my best”… • To increase my own happiness? • To make my day meaningful? • To increase my engagement? EA UNIVERSITY 8

Active Questions Lead to Engagement•Active questions focus on what you can do to make a positivedifference for yourself and the world.•Passive questions focus on what the world needs to do to make apositive difference for you. EA UNIVERSITY 9

You Must Define Success for Yourself•This means not basing your definition of success on ANY otherexternal criteria Passion – Do you love it? / Do you Lasting success = where passion, own this goal? purpose, and performance converge! Performance Purpose – – Delivering on Why does this promises/ matter? / What Winning at is the lasting what matters impact? EA UNIVERSITY 10

Happiness and Meaning•Defined from the inside not the outside•How we define Happiness and Meaningfulness changes constantly aswe journey through life EA UNIVERSITY 17

Mike’s Model of Happiness and Meaningfulness Identify Need for Change BecomeDefine Meaning Engaged Define Your Own Success EA UNIVERSITY 18

Marshall Goldsmith calls it MOJO•That positive spirit toward what you are doing now that starts from theinside and radiates to the outside…•Have you experienced this before? EA UNIVERSITY 19

I prefer the Flow model by MihályCsíkszentmihályiClaremont Graduate University psychology professor noted for hiswork in the study of happiness and creativity… and for his notoriouslydifficult name EA UNIVERSITY 20

Flow = Awesome! When Skill level is high and Challenge level is high = complete absorptionwith the activity and the situation. EA UNIVERSITY 21

Key Take-Aways1) Embracing Change in a World full of Uncertainty2) Engagement – “ Did I do my best?”3) Happiness – don’t plan for it! Should be top priority now! EA UNIVERSITY 22
