Mariel Zagunis. Presented By Jennifer E.

History Of Fencing. Fencing is a type of chivalrous sword-fighting. The French, Italians, and Spaniards have all claimed (and still do) that they started the sport of fencing. Newfound evidence supports that in 1200 b.c. the Egyptians had already began the custom of fencing as a sport. Several images that have been recovered from Egyptian times show that there were balls on the end of their weapons and the users wore protective gear. Though, back then the sport probably had another name and different rules, this seems to be the earliest documentation of fencing.

About Fencing. Fencing was an original sport in the Olympic games in ancient Greece. Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the father of the Olympic games was also a fencer. Did you know that it is a proven fact that the tip of a fencing sword is the fastest thing in the world, second only to (of course) to the marksman’s bullet.

About Fencing Today. In fencing today: Modern fencers must train for years to improve and sharpen their skills in speed, agility, endurance, flexibility, and in making split-second decisions without hesitation. There are four different kinds of fencing swords. The Sabre, which is a Calvary slice, cut and thrust sword; and is limited to everything above the waist. The Foil, which resembles the dueling sword and includes all areas except the head, arms, and legs. The epee, which is a freestyle blade and has no limits. The rapier, which is also a thrusting blade that the musketeers used.

Why I Chose Her. I chose Mariel Zagunis as my research topic because I want to learn how to fence. Although Mariel Zagunis is an expert with the sabre I want to learn how to fence with the epee (pronounced e-PAY). Mariel is a great role model. Watching her has shown me that though I cannot follow through with one of my dreams for a sport right now, I don’t have to give up, someday if I work hard enough I can follow through with all of my dreams!
