Managed metadata … hierarchical collection of centrally managed terms that you can define, and then use as attributes for items in SharePoint Server 2013.

Local terms Taxonomy Created within the context of a site collection Only for users of that site collection Global terms Created from the MMS interface via Central Admin Available to all sites and site collections connected to MMS …a formal classification system, groups the words, labels, and terms that describe something, and then arranges the groups into a hierarchy.
Keyword set Folksonomy No hierarchy Open term store (user defined terms) …informal classification system. It is evolves gradually as web site users collaborate on words, labels, and terms on a site.
