MAGAZINE FRONT COVER ANALYSIS AS MEDIA STUDIES

Incentive banner: this is used to encourage the reader to buy the magazine. It also always relates to the magazine’s genre, for example in this case it is offering a musician a chance to play a Slam dunk, a popular rock and metal festival. Cover image: this is very important as it can make or break your magazine front cover. The magazine companies always have to think about the mis en scene. In this case each member is posing slightly differently, and there are some different levels to make it look more interesting, each band member is also looking straight at the camera, and so it triggers a reaction in the reader and makes it look quite direct. Barcode, date website and issue NO: each of these is essential in every magazine. A website is a great way in which the magazine can gage more readers. It can also be an effective method of advertising. Quotations: quotations are a great promotional convention. They are attractive to the reader as they give them an insight into what the article contains. Buzz words: By having the buzz word in yellow it contrasts with the rest of the sentence. This ensures that the “win” stands out. This is important as it is appealing to the reader and could cause them to buy the magazine. The word is also encased in a puff making it even more prominent . Master head: this is probably the most important convention of a front cover. The way in which they have used the colour white makes the font stand out from the background. The way they have made the font look distressed and broken complies with the rock/metal genre. The way in which they have capitalised the font gives the impression of loud shouting, once again complying to the genre. Sub Story: sub stories are very important as they Attract the reader to the magazine my giving “tasters” of what’s inside. Her the sub story also incorporates a pun, stating “it’s a knockout”. Main cover story: the main cover story is in yellow . Due to there only being a small number of conventions in yellow this makes the cover story stand out and ensures that it is one of the main focus points of the cover. The bold block capitalised font also ensures that it is eye-catching. By having the band name in this font and only stating the type of article underneath in small writing , it makes the band name seem more important and suggests that it is an “exclusive” Base banner: by having the buzz word plus as one of the few conventions in yellow, it makes it incredibly eye catching. The way in which they have simply listed bands they have tactically attracted a wide range of people, and made it appealing for everyone.

Incentive Banner: this particular cover doesn’t comply with common conventions as it is a lot larger than most. This is probably due to the free gift. By describing the DVD as “explosive” they are emphasising the volatility of the music within the dvd and making it seem more attractive for the reader. They have also coloured the font in yellow and with only 2 other conventions in yellow, it makes it more eye catching. By having the font looking distressed and broken they once again emphasise the aggression with in the dvd. Cover Star: the mis en scene for this image has been chosen very deliberately. By having some of the brick background on show it gives the impression that Matt tuck has punched through the flag. The way in which the shot is reasonably close up allows us to see his angry open mouthed facial expression. Main cover line: by having the band name bullet for my valentine in their official band font it is easily identifiable for the reader. By colouring it in yellow it makes it stand our against the back ground of the flag. They have also made it bigger than the surrounding text, to make sure that the band name is the focal point. Quotations: By using quotations in this way from the featured band the editor makes the magazine seem more appealing as it gives the an insight of what the magazine includes. Master Heading: although other aspects of the back ground are the same colour and have the same texture at the master heading, it still stands out due to the white stroke effect around the outside. It fits the standard conventions of a metal music magazine as it is a bold thick font. It is also capitalised making it stand out. Puff : by having the puff scull shaped it fits with the violent connotations of metal as a genre. By it complying with the genre it compliments the front cover instead of it looking out of place. It’s also eye catching making the “free dvd” a great incentive. Base banner: by simply listing other bands at the bottom of the cover they ensure that there is an attraction for everyone. By including small details like the lightening bolts they ensure that there is less negative space.

Master heading: by having such a plain bold font they manage to make it stand out. It also makes it easy to read. The steel blue colour that they have chosen also stands out against the black background. Slogan: by having a slogan magazine can emphasise the positive attributes of their magazines. By stating “new music first” they suggest that all of their news is either exclusive or just simply up to date, which would encourage the reader to buy the magazine. Sub stories: by having some of the sub stories in the same colour font at the master heading this magazine goes against common conventions as usually the sub stories are in a completely different font to ensure the master head stands out. Puff: I think this puff is particularly effective as it is simply a slightly lighter shade of blue than the master heading . This ensure that the house style is effective rather than having to many colours on the front cover. I also like the way in which “muse” is in simple white block lettering making it easy to read and clear. Quotation, sub story : I love the way in which they have managed to use to conventions in one sub story by including a smile quotation. By having the quotation as a simply statement they make the reader want to read on. I also like the way that they have include a question beneath it as I think it will increase the readers curiosity. By listing other bands rock sound manage to appeal to a wide range of people . It also makes the magazine seem like it includes a lot of articles making it seem more appealing. Cover star: by having the cover star looking directly at the camera it makes the photo more personal and direct. The facial expression of the cover star look regretful which suits the cover story about him on the left hand side. The cover star is somewhat stereo typical of what you’d expect from the metal genre as he has long hair and tattoos.

Master heading and slogan: Q is one of the few magazines to incorporate a slogan with the master head and have it the same colour on every issue. This makes it a very eye-catching cove because rather than kerrang where the master heading colour can change Q is ALWAYS the same. It is also unique as instead of it going straight across the top like a banner it is simply always in the left hand corner. Sub stories: by using colloquial language such as “bastard” and quotes “ dance genius or noisy git” Q manages to establish a clear target audience of above 16+ year olds and also manages to establish an intriguing controversial twist which will be appealing to several readers. Cover star: this particular photograph is very close up giving the front cover a very intimate and seductive feel. In contrast by having her hands positioned like this on her face it also manages to give it a somewhat innocent feel. She also has her lips slightly parted making it seem more naturalistic . Her makeup has been done to specifically emphasise her eyes, making it piercing and direct. Quotation: due to the absence of a master head covering the top of the page they have been able to include this shocking quote across the top of the article. By using white font they have ensure that it stands out against the red/orange background of her hair. It also goes well with the white of her face which has been emphasised by using Photoshop. Sub story: by having the “16 page gig guide” they are appealing to a wide range of people who are interested in gigs. Puff: by having the puff a light blue they manage to tie in every colour from the cover star to another convention. It also emphasises the colour of her eye shadow.

Master heading: by having the master heading in both a unique font and colour on the front of the magazine it make it stand out. Cover star: by having a close up photograph with eye contact it make the image feel very direct and personal. The pose is also very seductive. By having her lips slightly parted and having soft natural makeup excluding her eyes it makes her look very alluring. Incentive banner: by having the incentive banner purely text based instead of having a separate background colour it gives it a very minimalistic feel. Cover story: by having the Adele in such a big font it makes it one of the main focal points of the cover. It is also one of the only more detailed fonts along side the master head. By simply having the words “heartbreak superstar” it makes the story very vague and gives no suggestion about what the article contains. Sub stories: by having all of the text in white excluding the master heading it gives the whole cover a simplistic feel. There is also a noticeable absence of any other picture except from the cover star.
