PowerPoint Presentation: LOCATIONS PowerPoint Presentation: LOCATIONS Locations are pivotal in films not least to set the scene but to portray a certain genre and what kind of market the film will be aimed at. Using locations that are iconic is something that is common in most media, in between scenes many directors make a choice to use landmarks of the place, for instance Times Square; in order to inform the audience they are in a certain place, in New York for this example. In our film we will be using London, in particular the financial district around Fenchurch Street. This area is notably harsh looking with large looming buildings with clean cut edges and cold blue features, it will create a sense of being watched and claustrophobia within the busy city. Using back streets and minor roads we will solve the problem of busy streets full of people staring into our camera and thus save time and effort. It also creates a sense of eeriness as the streets will be surprisingly bare to begin. We will use the landmark of the Gherkin (30 St Mary Axe) to open the film using a location that is recognisable. We will also be focusing our attention around Trinity Square Gardens (opposite the Tower of London) which is a fairly quiet park with a large war memorial. We will be using the war memorial as the new location for the murder as not only does it benefit from not being too public, it is beautiful and look incredible on camera. We will also use a small portion of Trinity Square Gardens. I will now show how I came to this decision through the statistics collected from the survey. PowerPoint Presentation: Fenchurch Street, Central London LOCATIONS The Central London area of Fenchurch Street is an excellent spot for filming due to its quiet streets (especially on a Saturday, the day we film) as well as its recognisable collection of buildings like St Mary Axe/The Gherkin and the Natwest Tower. In addition I believe there are an interesting array of wider and tighter streets, alleyways, passes and main roads meaning a visual variation whilst not being too spread out. The results of our survey concluded with many people liking the area, some outwardly commenting that it was their favourite. Many people below connected the image shown of Fenchurch Street to Action, Spy Films and Drama/Mystery. This is something that we found particularly helpful in selecting this location for the film Being one of two of the highest rated locations we can’t ignore this as not only do we both like the location; it is easy to get there and film; quiet enough to film without onlookers and full of interesting shot potential. We will be using Fenchurch Street for the film. PowerPoint Presentation: Cabot Square, Canary Wharf, London LOCATIONS Cabot Square in the heart of London’s Canary Wharf, is an excellent area for its easily recognisable buildings and distinctive architecture. Like Fenchurch Street it is an area of high-rise buildings casting interesting shadows and lighting onto the square; it also scored 4/5 stars in our survey Many people recognised the area and commented on this, they also said that they liked the area many commenting however that it resembled something from a Romantic Film and one other a Business Drama. We immediately decided that despite its potential and despite the interest from the people taking the survey it could create the impression of wrong genres. None of the genres or film types matched those of the type we were aiming for with the exception of one. We are therefore ruling this location out from our list as we felt there was too much wrong with it. Not only is it more difficult to travel to, it can be far too busy at certain times, surprisingly on Saturdays this can often be the case. PowerPoint Presentation: Whitehall, Central London LOCATIONS In the midst of one of the most important political areas in the world, Whitehall nestles between The Houses of Parliament, St. James Park and Trafalgar Square. It is a great locations for the quantity of distinctive Georgian and Neo-Classicalist Architecture that displays some of the best examples of such in all of London. Our audience responded pretty poorly to this location, many seeing the location’s many Gothic influences in architecture and as such responding that it is good for a horror film. A smaller portion also picked up on these older influences in design and thought it would work well in a period drama. Whitehall is an incredibly busy and vibrant area of London meaning that filming would be difficult. Travel would also be an issue for ourselves, cast and crew. We felt that all of these problems coupled with the location lacking anything ‘Thriller’ looking meant that the film should not be filmed here. PowerPoint Presentation: Canada Square Park, Canary Wharf, London LOCATIONS Sat between some of the highest towers in Europe, Canada Square Park is a unique green space that we initially thought would work excellently. As it is still a park it represents the children ( Artur and Vera) yet the looming buildings that cast shadows over the space is the governments, the adults of the world oppressing and starving the children of their natural essence, sunlight. However the audience did not react well to the location. Many commented that it reminded them of a Rom-Com which obviously is not the direction we want to go toward. In fact half of those surveyed said this meaning that this location will not and cannot be used as it will jeopardise our film and its genre Despite the allegory that can be achieved by location the awful audience feedback on this location, its central and often busy area mean the film may end up being too difficult to film and not provide enough explanation of the film’s nature. PowerPoint Presentation: Charlotte Mews, Goodge Street, Central London LOCATIONS Charlotte Mews is a classic example of a London alley, its own little street in the centre of a collection of buildings. The tiny lane is incredibly good for filming due to its looks (it seems almost like a production set rather than a real world location) and is quiet despite being close to the hustle and bustle of the rest of Goodge Street. The audience responded by saying that it reminded them of a Crime/Mystery film, which whilst it would fit with our genre I feel that it is too harsh. Thriller is the boundary of our film and though the characters commit crimes they do so in a less severe way. As locations go Goodge Street is fairly difficult to get to from our current location which creates a slight issue with both the cast and crew. Whilst Charlotte Mews is quiet, the surrounding areas are not, in fact they are always busy creating another filming issue. We will not be using Charlotte Mews, which is a shame because of the picturesque area; but there are too many transport and filming issues surrounding it. PowerPoint Presentation: Trinity Square Gardens, Central London LOCATIONS Set just next to the legendary Tower Hill, home to some of the most brutal beheadings in all of history; Trinity Square Gardens and the Tower Hill Memorial will seem a fitting place for another (though fictional) execution. The area is fairly quiet for its central tourist location meaning that we can use recognisable buildings, the beautiful landscape of the Gardens and the memorial without the worry of the general public being in the way. The audience did respond rather predictably, due to the architecture of the memorial they were lead to think that it was a war film or a historical drama. A surprisingly large proportion of people also thought it was a Romantic film (though I don’t quite see it) this is slightly worrying. It may come as a surprise however that I have decided that it is a great location not least because of the ease of travel; proximity to Fenchurch Street; its quiet area; its historical context but also because the light and architecture of the memorial can be used in a way that will not appear as a war film but the Thriller we want it to be. We are challenging convention with the use of this building and its gardens taking the idea of a park (for children) yet contrasting with the children killing.
