Slide 1: Properties of solids and geometrical figures By Lisa Mahon Common plane shapes : Common plane shapes square rectangle triangle circle What are these common shapes called? Slide 3: Other plane shapes Slide 5: Special plane shapes Regular shapes have all their sides and all their angles equal. Irregular shapes have no sides or angles equal. The dashes tell you what lines are equal to each other. NO dashes therefore no lines are equal to each other. Slide 6: A prism has both ends the same shape. PRISMS Slide 7: Prisms have 2 parallel congruent faces called bases. Congruent means “the same” Slide 8: A pyramid come to a point. Rectangular pyramid It has 5 Faces The 4 Side Faces are Triangles The Base is a rectangular It has 5 Vertices (corner points) It has 8 Edges Pyramid (a polyhedron): has one base.  All other faces are triangles that intersect at one vertex. Slide 9: Pyramids are named by their bases. triangular pyramid pentagonal pyramid square pyramid Slide 10: As with many things there always seems to be exceptions. A solid’s name usually depends on the shape of its base. However, some solids have special names. Three such solids are: Cone It has a flat base It has one curved side Because it has a curved surface it is not a prism or pyramid. It has a flat base and a flat top The base is the same as the top, and also in-between It has one curved side Because it has a curved surface it is not a prism or pyramid. It is perfectly symmetrical It has no edges or vertices It is not a prism or pyramid All points on the surface are the same distance from the center. CONE SPHERE CYLINDER Slide 11: Parts of a solid Each corner (or point) of a solid is called a vertex (plural vertices). Each flat surface of a solid is called a face. The join between separate faces of a solid is called an edge. Slide 12: How many edges does this pentagonal pyramid have? Some examples of edges There are 10 edges How many edges does this rectangular pyramid have? Some examples of edges There are 8 edges Slide 13: How many vertex does this pentagonal pyramid have? Some examples of a vertex There are 6 vertex How many vertex does this rectangular pyramid have? Some examples of a vertex There are 5 vertex Slide 14: How many faces does this pentagonal pyramid have? Some examples of a face There are 6 faces How many faces does this rectangular pyramid have? Some examples of a face There are 5 faces
