LIFTING AND BODY MECHANICS: LIFTING AND BODY MECHANICS By Manuel Gallegos RN, BSN GOAL: AVOID BACK INJURIES WHILE DOING WORK QUICKLY AND EFFICIENTLY : GOAL: AVOID BACK INJURIES WHILE DOING WORK QUICKLY AND EFFICIENTLY Back Injuries:  Back Injuries Low back pain is the most common work-related medical problem in the United States It affects more than 20 million Americans and is the leading cause of disability among people ages 19 - 45 Low back pain is the No. 1 leading cause of missed work days Spinal Anatomy: Spinal Anatomy Spine is made of vertebrae It has three curves: neck, middle and lower back Muscles of Back: Muscles of Back Muscle strains and lumbar sprains are the most common cause of low back pain: Muscle strains and lumbar sprains are the most common cause of low back pain A muscle strain occurs when the muscles of the back are abnormally stretched too far A lumbar sprain occurs when the ligaments, the tough bands of tissue that hold bones together, are torn from their attachments . Why do Injuries Occur?: Why do Injuries Occur? 1. We often injure our backs if we are in a hurry to get the task accomplished 2 . Force: Exerting too much force on your back — such as by lifting or moving heavy objects — can cause injury 4. Repetition: Repeating certain movements can lead to muscle fatigue or injury 5. Posture: Slouching exaggerates your back's natural curves, which can lead to muscle fatigue and injury Proper Lifting Strategies: Proper Lifting Strategies Analyze what needs to be accomplished Think about how heavy the person is and how far she/he has to be moved. Is it a two-person job? Stand directly in front of the patient, with feet about shoulder width apart One foot should be in front of the other for balance Always keep back as straight as possible when lifting clients: Always keep back as straight as possible when lifting clients Lifting and Your Back: Lifting and Your Back Never bend and lift from the waist Use mechanical aids or human assistance when possible Bend your knees and use your legs Notice the back is mostly straight, just slightly bent: Notice the back is mostly straight, just slightly bent Correct Positioning is Important!!: Correct Positioning is Important!! Never lift and twist Get help if needed: human assistance, mechanical devices Maintain proper posture and body alignment Exercise prior to work
