WHERE DO I WANT TO SPEND MY ETERNITY? : WHERE DO I WANT TO SPEND MY ETERNITY? Where do I go with my life? Hell may not exist…. Is it worthwhile to do so much in order to go to Heaven? Will I go to Heaven? Am I sure of that? Am I in the correct track? E. g. Why Penance and fast? THE END OF THE WORLD: HEAVEN - HELL - PURGATORY : THE END OF THE WORLD: HEAVEN - HELL - PURGATORY TIP For additional advice seeDale Carnegie Training® Presentation Guidelines WHAT IS DEATH? We see people dying everyday. Concept difficult to define: to lose one’s unifying vital principle. Separation body and soul. Natural: united. In Sacred Scripture, to die is “to depart” or “to be away from the body” (Phil 1:23; 2 Cor 5:8). : In Sacred Scripture, to die is “to depart” or “to be away from the body” (Phil 1:23; 2 Cor 5:8). Death is the dissolution of the unity in man, or the moment in which the soul leaves the body. The decomposition of the body is evident, but simple beings like pure spirits or the soul cannot be dissolved or decomposed. THUS, THE SOUL DOES NOT DIE. It is absolutely necessary to assert the survival and subsistence of the soul after death. It is demonstrable by reason alone, and has been repeatedly taught by the Church (The Fifth Lateran Council (year 1513) solemnly defined: 1 Cor 15:12-14.20 Cause and Origin of Death : Cause and Origin of Death “God did not make death, and he does not delight in the death of the living. For he created all things that they might exist...” (Wis 1:13-14). God created man ==>1. supernatural gifts of grace + 2. preternatural gifts One of these gifts was the bodily immortality that Adam was meant to pass on, with life itself, to his own descendants. Even though man possessed a mortal nature, God destined him not to die. After sin, Adam lost the gratuitous gifts and privileges, both supernatural and preternatural. This loss affects his descendants as well. Disorder of the appetites (fomes peccati= tendency to sin) and death. : Disorder of the appetites (fomes peccati= tendency to sin) and death. Universality of Death. “Therefore as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin; and so death spread to all men because all men sinned” (Rom 5:12; cf Gen 2:17, Wis 2:13-14, 1 Cor 15:22). Death: door to another life : Death: door to another life Death as End of the Time to Gain Merits : Death as End of the Time to Gain Merits Profession of Faith, by Pope Clement IV (a.d. 1274): “If those who are truly penitent die in charity before they have done sufficient penance for their sins ... their souls are cleansed after death in purgatorial or cleansing punishments [that is, in purgatory].... The souls of those who have not committed any sin at all ... are promptly taken up into heaven. The souls of those who die in mortal sin ... soon go down into hell.” After death, there is no more space for repentance, no time for satisfaction. : After death, there is no more space for repentance, no time for satisfaction. The separated soul is a pure spirit; it does no longer depend on the fickleness of the imagination and the senses (acting in the body). Consequently, it adheres to its chosen end in an unchangeable manner. THE ETERNAL FATE of each person is determined immediately after death. Existence of the Particular Judgment : Existence of the Particular Judgment Parable of the rich man and the poor Lazarus (cf Lk 16:22 ff), the promise made by Christ to the good thief from the cross (cf Lk 23:40 ff), that he will immediately be with him in Paradise. Other texts: cf Mt 16:26; 2 Cor 5:8; Phil 1:23; Heb 9:27; 12:23. God shows the plans He had for you. You check what you did with your life. Basically, the particular judgment consists in the communication of the divine sentence to the separated soul. Work of the Trinity. It is not a self-trial. LAST JUDGMENT : LAST JUDGMENT The Catechism of the Catholic Church declares that the Final Judgment will reveal up to the last consequences of our actions and omissions. The reward of the soul is given out right after death; but in the Final Judgment they will also receive the glory of the body. PURGATORY : PURGATORY CCC defines purgatory as a "purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven," which is experienced by those "who die in God’s grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified" (CCC 1030). The purification is necessary because, as Scripture teaches, nothing unclean will enter the presence of God in heaven (Rev. 21:27) and, while we may die with our mortal sins forgiven, there can still be many impurities in us, specifically venial sins and the temporal punishment due to sins already forgiven. “Severity of punishment corresponds properly speaking to the amount of guilt: : “Severity of punishment corresponds properly speaking to the amount of guilt: The length corresponds to the firmness with which sin has taken root in its subject. And thus, a soul stained with grave sins in moments of weakness, after suffering with great intensity, may leave purgatory ahead of another soul which, without having seriously offended God, lived in tepidity, despising the calls of grace to a life of greater self-surrender, and not giving importance to venial sins. Existence of Hell : Existence of Hell Cyprian of Carthage: "An ever-burning Gehenna and the punishment of being devoured by living flames will consume the condemned; Souls along with their bodies will be preserved for suffering in unlimited agonies. . . . The grief at punishment will then be without the fruit of repentance; weeping will be useless, and prayer ineffectual. Too late will they believe in eternal punishment, who would not believe in eternal life" (To Demetrian 24 [A.D. 252]). The existence of hell is a truth of faith clearly and repeatedly found in Sacred Scripture. : The existence of hell is a truth of faith clearly and repeatedly found in Sacred Scripture. Hell : The abyss, furnace of fire, Valley of Hinnon (Gehenna), sheol, eternal fire, pond of brimstone and fire, exterior darkness, place of torments, perdition, destruction, second death, Tartarus, and inextinguishable fire, are some of the Scriptural terms used to refer to it (cf Nm 16:30; Ps 48:18; Is 14:15; Mt 5:29; 10:28; and 18:9). Jesus announces in severe terms that he “will send out his angels and they will weed out of his kingdom ... all who do evil. They will throw them into the fiery furnace” (Mt 13:41-42). “Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire” (Mt 25:41). Hell, therefore, involves a twofold punishment: the pain of loss and the pain of sense. : Hell, therefore, involves a twofold punishment: the pain of loss and the pain of sense. God does not predestine anyone to go to hell; for anyone to go to hell there should be a voluntary aversion to God (a mortal sin), and a persistence in sin until the end on one’s life. Eternity and Inequality Existence of Heaven : Existence of Heaven The Creed of the People of God says: “We believe that the multitude of souls gathered round Jesus and Mary in Paradise forms the Heavenly Church. There they enjoy eternal joy, seeing God as he is. There also, in different degrees and ways, they share with the holy angels. Nature of Heaven : Nature of Heaven Heaven consists in the perfect and total possession of the Good, without any mixture of evil. Heaven is the ultimate end and the accomplishment of the most profound aspirations of man; the supreme and definitive state of bliss. Definitive vision of God. Direct Vision of God : Direct Vision of God God unite himself to us. In heaven, the souls of the blessed “see clearly the Triune God himself, just as he is.” The Beatific Vision, and the joy that it engenders, make the soul, in a way, identified with God. "I want to see God and, in order to see him, I must die." (St Teresa of Avila) There is no longer any need for the virtues of wayfarers on earth those which tend by their very nature to the perfection of charity. : There is no longer any need for the virtues of wayfarers on earth those which tend by their very nature to the perfection of charity. * This union with God through vision and love produces perfect happiness. * Accidental glory. “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him” (1 Cor 2:9). : “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him” (1 Cor 2:9). The eternal happiness of the saints are like the two faces of a coin: Perpetual praise is given to God, the Supreme Good that irresistibly attracts the human will; and the saints find the greatest possible happiness in this praise and recognition of the glory of God. The Inequality of Blessedness "My desire is to depart and be with Christ." (Phil 1:23) LIMBO: NO. Just hope there is heaven for them as well. : LIMBO: NO. Just hope there is heaven for them as well. After several years of study, the Vatican's International Theological Commission said there are good reasons to hope that babies who die without being baptized go to heaven. Document April 2007: "The Hope of Salvation for Infants Who Die Without Being Baptized" Grace has priority over sin, and the exclusion of innocent babies from heaven does not seem to reflect Christ's special love for "the little ones." Christ’s solidarity & Scripture also proclaims the "superabundance" of grace over sin.
