Lecture 10: Power, Politics, and Social Order: Lecture 10: Power, Politics, and Social Order Week 10 – Anthro2202 Lisa Beiswenger PowerPoint Presentation: Fun Facts: Interesting Conventions Every year talented celebrity impersonators from all over the world gather in Las Vegas for The Original Celebrity Impersonators Convention. This year marks that twelfth anniversary of the convention. Held annually in Twinsburg, Ohio, Twins Days is open to identical and fraternal twins of all ages. Billed as the largest anthopomorphic (AKA "furry“) convention in the world, Anthrocon is held annually in Pittsburgh, PA. and drew over 5,000 attendees in 2012 . (I used to work down the street from where they held Anthrocon . Everyone I met was extremely nice, and one guy had a homemade articulated wolf mask that could bite through a beer can!). ** There is no audio on this slide** Assignments: Assignments Yi Peng Lantern Festival 2012 Monks look up at the magnificent night sky filled with thousands of lanterns in awe. I am posting it early so that you can work on your PowerPoint project over break. You only need to answer the questions about the film and the Napoleon Chagnon articles. Families visit the shrine of Hazrat Ali, or the Blue Mosque, in Mazar-i-Sharif in Afghanistan on May 11, 2012. According to Ongka , why are pigs so important when they aren’t part of the staple diet? How does Ongka amass his collection of pigs? How does the acquisition of so many pigs affect Ongka’s family (and the composition of his family)? What difficulties arise that delay the moka ? In the end, what items are given at the moka (be specific). Why are these the items chosen? Summarize, these points into 4-5 short sentences. These sentences will become your “bullets” for the slide. As you write your bullets, you don’t need to spell out everything. Explain just enough so that your ideas are clear to those who haven’t read your reports. Treat your bullets as if you were going to use them in a presentation for the class. Each group member should have their own slide for their observation overviews (I only put two to save space). Make sure to mention where the observation took place. PowerPoint Presentation: Group Member 2 Observation Overview For this slide, “Group Member 2” should pull 4-5 major ideas from their observation report. (see slide 8 for additional instructions) Create additional slides as necessary. Each member should have their own “observation overview” slide (I only put two to save space). PowerPoint Presentation: For this slide and the next, the whole group should collaborate to synthesize their observation reports together into 8-10 short sentences (4-5 for this slide and 4-5 for the next). These sentences become your “bullets” for this slide and the next one. The group can achieve this in a couple of different ways: You can look for similar behaviors that appear in most or all of the observations. You can identify people who are “outliers”. “Outliers” are people who do not act in the “typical” way. I recommend that each group member writes 3-4 bullets and then the group (or just the leader) can choose the best 8-10 bullets to include . Make sure that you not only describe the behaviors, but that you also try to explain them. Brainstorm with your group to try to understand why the “actors” are behaving the way that they do. Observation Synthesis 1 PowerPoint Presentation: This is a continuation of the information from the previous slide. See slide 10 (Observation Synthesis 1) for more details. Observation Synthesis 2 Group Member 1 Interview Overview: Group Member 1 Interview Overview For this slide, “Group M ember 1” should pull 4-5 major ideas from their interview report. Summarize, these points into 4-5 short sentences. These sentences will become your “bullets” for the slide. As you write your bullets, you don’t need to spell out everything. Repeat this for each group member. Each group member should have a slide for their interview overview (I only put two to save space) . DO NOT USE THE NAMES OF YOUR INTERVIEWEES ON THESE SLIDES!! You may come up with fake names or refer to them as “informant 1” and “informant 2” if you want to. PowerPoint Presentation: Group Member 2 Interview Overview For this slide, “Group Member 2” should pull 4-5 major ideas from their observation report. See slide 12 (Group Member 1 Interview Overview) for additional instructions. Create additional slides as necessary. You should synthesize your interview and observation reports together into 8-10 short sentences (4-5 for this slide and 4-5 for the next). These sentences become your “bullets” for this slide and the next one. This is where you take your observations and interviews and join them together. You can do this in a couple of different ways. Primarily, you should look at whether your observations and your interviews are telling the same story. Was there anything surprising about what you saw when you compared the observations and interviews from all of the group members? How do people in the United States make food decisions? What are the motivations behind their food decisions? Are they making choices for financial reasons? Health reasons? Convenience? Etc… Be creative. The template that I created is supposed to be used as a general guideline. You should use the perspectives of your entire group’s experience as ethnographers to form your conclusions. I recommend that each group member writes 3-4 bullets and then the group (or just the leader) can choose the best 8-10 bullets to include.
