THE REVIVAL OF THE GAMES OF OUR HERITAGE IN SCHOOLS AND BARANGAYS A GRASROOTS ADVOCACY PROGRAM ORGANIZED BY MAGNA KULTURA FOUNDATION

While Filipino street games have been organized seasonally in the past by government organization’s and private commercial enterprises, the Games has never been sustained and revived to its once popular stature. Currently, no government or private entity has established a legitimate organization for Larong Pinoy. Furthermore, our country does not have School for Larong Pinoy, unlike sports training clinics that have propagated for western sports. . Yet, it is a fact that Larong Pinoy has a strong equity that encompasses generations of Filipinos: from today’s living elderly citizens, to parent & adults, as well as youth & toddlers. This document presents an advocacy to revive the games of our heritage, with the establishment of a sports infrastructure to re-institutionalize these with a sports curriculum in schools and barangays. Magna Kultura Foundation lends the same expertise pioneered in well-known grassroots programs in the 90’s, such as the MILO Sports Clinics, Bear Brand Kite Festival & other government projects. On September 2008, the Department of Education issued an Official Circular Memorandum that endorsed Magna Kultura Foundation to demonstrate Larong Pinoy in schools with an authorized sports training curriculum. The advent of information technology has ushered high-tech gadgets and computer games that has fascinated children and even adults. Computers and game gadgets are mostly played indoor, with less outdoor physical activity and bonding among neighborhood friends. In many urban and rural areas, however, a great majority of Filipino children still find time to play outdoor indigenous games with their neighborhood friends, as most of them are still unable to own expensive high-tech gadgets. Unlike children who grew up playing in the streets, some grew up with modern technology don’t have “kababata” in their neighborhood, as their friends are contacted within the virtual scenario, “ka-Chat” at “Friendster” or “Yahoo Messenger”. Children need to have physical outdoor activity with real friends.

THE PROBLEM OF LARONG PINOY’S DETERIORATION IN THE COUNTRY FACT IS: Unlike Western sports (i.e. basketball), playing Larong Pinoy game ends in the street because there is no venue for further competition. As soon as children reaches the age of 10 years old, they switch to sports available in schools & barangays.

ITO ANG TUNAY NA LARO NG MGA PINOY. The Filipino Games are timeless. It is still well-loved and cherished by many, as it is part of our heritage. Larong Pinoy’s popularity encompasses not only the youth, but adult and elderly generation as well. It’s a timeless cultural treasure. The games are still being played in urban & rural communities, by a majority population who have no access to high technology. The games are still taught in public schools. A majority of adults and elders would like to pass on the fun tradition to make the new generation experience the fun of being truly Filipinos. IPAKILALA NATIN ANG MGA LARO SA BAGONG KABATAAN. In an effort to revive this cultural treasure, Magna Kultura created an infrastructure with sports school and tournament. Outreach sports clinics are conducted with Dep-Ed authorized sports training curriculum, and coordinated schools and barangays to impart the official game play and tournament rules.

In Y2008, the Department of Education issued a Circular Memorandum authorizing Magna Kultura Foundation to teach the Traditional Filipino Games in public elementary schools, implementing sports training in Physical Education Classes.

The main advocacy goal is to instill fundamental values among the new generation of youth. LARONG PINOY OUTREACH PROGRAMS GOALS: 1 To INSTILL PATRIOTISM and love of things that are Filipino. 2 To make it a vehicle for BONDING AMONG YOUTH AND PARENTS/ELDERS. 3 To ENLIVEN COMMUNITIES by bringing back the fun in neighborhoods. The Traditional Filipino Street Games provides children activities that are easy to play, using materials that are easy to produce.

In addition to the significant values of culture & tradition, the Larong Pinoy program promotes healthy lifestyle and active outdoor play among children in schools and barangays. Larong Pinoy promotes PHYSICAL (exercise), SOCIAL (camaraderie) & EMOTIONAL (fun & shapes character) activities through outdoor activities. The physical & health benefits of outdoor play are obvious, yet the social and personal benefits are equally as important. LARONG PINOY PROMOTES  Social Development thru interaction with other children or adults.  Problem solving skills.  Emotional & Physical development.  Eye-hand coordination.  Creativity by stimulating a child’s imagination and cognitive skills.  Self -entertainment.  Development of fine and large motor skills.

Establishing the 1st Ever School for Laro ng Lahi and a Legitimate Inter-City Schools Competition SCHOOL CLINIC & TOURNAMENTS

TRAINING SCHOOLS & PLAY CAMPS Training schools are conducted in schools and barangays with Dep-Ed approved training curriculum.  Trainings are given to School P.E. teachers and Barangay sports coordinators, building capacity to sustain training students and participants.  Training for children with ages 5 to 15 years old with instructions on game play mechanics and procedures for  Scientific drill exercises executed to train kids in proper posture & movements

SPORTS CLINICS IN SCHOOLS AND BARANGAYS. The “Eskwe-Laro” provides game  Individual Game Instruction  Synchronized Group Movement instructions with scientific drills.  Group Clustering

SPORTS CLINIC GAMES PATINTERO, TUMBANG PRESO, LUKSONG TINIK & PIKO Time Allotment for each Game is 20 Minutes. THE STUDENTS WILL BE DIVIDED INTO VARIOUS CAMP GROUPS 5 Minutes – Game Mechanics Instruction Lecture CAMP GROUPS  Before Each Drill: Background Intro & Goals of each Game --- (2 minutes) 1) CAMP GROUP is based on the  Explanation of the mechanics --- for 3 minutes with number of classes attending each formation demo by the marshal and when possible with session. some kid participant 2) Each Camp Group is names as “Camp Group 1“ or “Camp Group 2“ AFTER EACH DRILL, STUDENTS WIIL DIVIDED INTO 3) Each Camp Group is lead by a Camp CAMP GROUPS FOR DEMO PLAY. Group head, present during the entry of participants and at the same time verbally guide them with initial instructions on what to do. CAMP GROUP HEAD Each Camp Group will be headed by a CAMP Group Head as will be the instructor for clinic drills and game competitions

SCHOOL OUTREACH PROGRAM PLAN Schools & Barangays are given FREE GAME MATERIALS. GAME KIT consisting of: SCHOOLS RECEIVE THE FOLLOWING: 1) Game Instruction Booklets  Training Manuals and Syllabus for Classroom & P.E. classes 2) Larong Pinoy Game Equipments  Game Equipments and Tournament Materials 3) Permanent playground markers  One-Day Trainer’s Training Skills Transfer for Teachers Schools campuses are provided with ground markers for school children to use. The ground  One-Day Larong Pinoy Clinic for Students markers will be permanently painted in the playgrounds and playing courts.  Weekly Monitoring during P.E. class session for 5 weeks

SCHOOL & BARANGAY COMPETITIONS DURING CLINIC TRAININGS IN SCHOOLS AND BARANGAYS, TEAMS ARE FORMED. Intramurals will be held in schools & barangays to determine to official contenders. IT HAS MADE A LASTING LEGACY THAT IS STILL BEING ENJOYED BY FILIPINOS.

Since 1991, the Kite Festivals were conducted annually in Cebu, Davao, Cagayan De Oro, General Santos, Tacloban, Dumaguete, Laoag, Lucena, with the last leg held in Manila. The event revived the culture of Kite Flying in the country.

THE MILO SPORTS PROGRAM Sports Programs rolled-out in schools and barangays. Building capacity of sports educators and amateur associations.
