Pensee Journal Vol 76, No. 2;Feb 2014 Determination of Positions and Desired Characteristics According to Positions in Regard to Sports in Job Ads Levent ATALI (Corresponding author) Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality, Department of Culture and Social Affairs Kocaeli, Turkey E-mail: leventatali@gmail.com Abstract The purpose of this study is the determination of diversity of positions taking part in sports job ads and revelation of the characteristics according to the position requested from the applicants. This study was conducted by examining 103 job ads related to sports that had been obtained from four (4) web-based human resources websites that can be accepted as the most comprehensive ones on the internet between the dates November 1st to 25th, 2013. Job ads that had been displayed during the above-mentioned period of time that was used for the study which was conducted based on content analysis method were examined in terms of job titles and the characteristics obtained from description of each position were expressed by tabulating as percentage and frequency. As a result, it was seen that the positions of "subscription services "and" sports news editor" are the new positions in job ads. Although some characteristics requested from the candidates are common for all positions but it is also seen that some characteristics requested for the same position change for different job ads. In general, the characteristics such as "being experienced", "graduating from schools of physical education and sports", "being able to work in team", "high communication skills" and "flexible working hours" take place in many job ads. According to the data obtained specific to this study; the desired education level can be standardized according to the positions in job ads and also, characteristics requested from candidates who will apply for the job such as having high communication skills or debonairness may be accepted as general for all job ads under a general title. Necessary education levels must be taken into consideration for all characteristics that take place in job ads and especially, projects which will gain experience during student days should be developed. Keywords: Job ads, human resources, employment in sports 1. Introduction The importance of human resources is adopted as widely accepted understanding for a company to continue its existence and realize the goals. It becomes difficult for a management which does not implement the human resources management principles to get sufficient efficiency from its employees. (Çalık, 2006; cited by Karakaya, Karataş, Özdenk and Karataş, 2013) Recruiting personnel, finding personnel resources and ensuring continuity that are some of the duties of human resources management have importance at this stage. Human resource selection process is the stages of determining the most appropriate person among job applicants in terms of the qualifications required by the job (Yüksel, 2003). Recruitment as being one of the most important subjects of human resources management can be defined as employment of employees who have the necessary qualifications for the company and may carry the company to a better future based on the understanding of choosing the right personnel. For the recruitment of a new person, first of all, the candidates who can do that work must be found and then, the most appropriate one must be selected among these candidates (Basım and Argan, 2009). This process that forms one of the important study subject of human resources includes determination of needs of existing personnel, announcement of this need by using appropriate ways and tools, accepting applications and recruitment and employment of the appropriate candidates (Fındıkçı, 2012). The process of seeking for candidates who has enough knowledge, skills, abilities and motivation necessary for the desired position and bringing them into force, gain importance during the human resource finding process. Job descriptions, job requirements and qualifications required by the job should 82 office@penseejournal.com

Pensee Journal Vol 76, No. 2;Feb 2014 be introduced during human resource finding process and these qualifications that had been introduced and set out must be in a way lead to make the right decision in recruiting the right personnel for the position. (Yüksel, 2003). It is desired the requirements of the job and qualifications of the candidate to be compatible with each other during this stage which is called as personnel selection. If the qualifications of recruited personnel fall short of the requirements of the job, which means wrong personnel was recruited for the position. In this case, restarting the human resources selection process will be an additional cost and time loss for the business organization (Basım and Argan, 2009). Latif and Uçkun (2004) defines the personnel selection process as the seeking, finding and recruiting the most appropriate people for the business organization who will suit most to the requirements of the business with their qualifications, abilities, skills and knowledge by adhering to the human resources plans. Job ads are of particular concern to candidates who started out especially to look for a job or to change their jobs for any reason. Human resources pages of newspapers, some periodical publications and similar web pages of internet world are known as places where job ads can be found and followed easily. Job descriptions, job qualifications descriptions, position descriptions taking place in job ads which are of particular concern to candidates looking for a job or to change their jobs and published by companies for to find personnel have great importance (Latif and Uçkun, 2004). In addition, it should be reported that equal opportunities are provided for all kinds of gender status, marital status, pregnancy status, religion and race status for all applicants in job ads. (Department of Sport and Recreation, 2003). When we look at recruitment and working of personnel specific to sports, personnel plays an important role in effectiveness of sports services. This stems from basic formation of quality evaluations of customer and firstly, producing and presentation of sports services together with the customer and secondly, behaviors during the production and consumption of sports services. Success of sports businesses depends on the efficacy of personnel who are in direct contact with customer in a large extent and the personnel's success in bilateral relationships. For this, selection of personnel who will offer sports services is of vital performance (Serarslan and Kepoğlu, 2005). Recruiting the right person for the right position is accepted as an important process for the sports management and industry (Watt, 2005). Besides of all these processes, the point which makes the personnel selection process important and should be certainly kept in mind is the fact that many businesses in any sizes or in any sectors are experiencing this problem, too (Fındıkçı, 2012). When we look at this problem specific to sports job ads, the purpose of this study is the determination of diversity of positions taking part in sports job ads and revelation of the characteristics according to the position requested from the applicants. 2. Materials and Methods 2.1. Research Model This study was conducted by examining 103 job ads related to sports that had been obtained from four (4) web-based human resources websites that can be accepted as the most comprehensive ones on the internet between the dates November 1st to 25th, 2013. Job ads that had been displayed during the abovementioned period of time that was used for the study which was conducted based on content analysis method were examined in terms of job titles and the characteristics obtained from description of each position were expressed by tabulating as percentage and frequency. 3. Findings In this section, positions and characteristics are tabulated according to the obtained data and descriptions are made related to these results. 83 office@penseejournal.com

Pensee Journal Vol 76, No. 2;Feb 2014 When we look at the distribution of characteristics of all positions in Table 15; being experienced, Graduating from Schools of Physical Education and Sports, Being able to work in team, Having High Communication Skills and Debonairness take place as the characteristics with the highest frequency. 4. Discussion When looked at the position titles at job ads, "subscription services" and "sports news editor" positions are seen to be new employment areas in regard to sports. We can say that these new employment areas create new opportunities for a sports career. Asking candidates who may be hired for the position of coach to be "high school graduates" has importance for individuals who are at the level of undergraduate education. This characteristic to rank at a higher frequency for coaching in regard to documents required by federations can be described as being high school graduate is sufficient for this position. Asking for lifeguard certificate from candidates at all job ads of position of lifeguard can be evaluated as an expected result. Taking place of this condition at all job ads of this position can be conditioned with the vital importance of the position and the results of this work may lead to legal liabilities. The characteristic of "being experienced" to have the highest frequency at job ads for the position of animator and pilates instructor may be interpreted in the manner that the work to be carried out is based on implementation. The characteristic of "being certified" to have the highest frequency at job ads for the position of masseur / masseuse can be said that this characteristic is determined with document. The characteristic of “Having proficiency in the use of computers” to have the highest frequency at job ads for the position of subscription services takes place as an expected result. We can say that the work to be done is mostly based on using computers that this characteristic has come into prominence. As a result, it can be said that desired characteristics vary according to the positions and a characteristic which is important for a position may be less important for another position. It can be said that some characteristics such as "Good human relations" and "Debonairness" may be subject to decision during employment interview which will be performed after the application process of the candidate or during personnel's trial process at the workplace. Bravo, Won, Shonk, (2012) stated that various elements are important during the employment process and characteristics such as work ethics, communication skills, motivation, maturity and thinking skills, decision-making skills, human relations, technical skills and naturalness become prominent and besides, experience, leadership skills, references, having undergraduate education, being certified, taking part in sports and academic achievements are the other prominent statements coming into fore. It was seen in this study that many characteristics stated as important during the employment process are included in job ads which had been examined. Overall, the characteristics such as "Being experienced", "Graduating from Schools of Physical Education and Sports", "Being able to work in team", "Having High Communication Skills" and "Flexible Working Hours" with the highest frequencies specified at job ads draw attention. It can be said that preferring those who are graduated from Schools of Physical Education and Sports is a right way for to find personnel to the business organizations that operate in the fields of services and business areas sports in regard to sports. Taşmektepligil, Hazar, Ağaoğlu, Öğreten and Terzioğlu (2009) stated by supporting this condition that employment of individuals who had received education in the field of physical education and sports is related with a more intense orientation to the activities of sports meeting physical activity needs of public at a period when sports have been increasingly started to gain recognition in public and more intense orientation will be made for these kinds of activities and by basing on these grounds, most of relevant problems will be solved spontaneously about the issue if the priority is given to individuals who had received sports education in means of employment in the units in regard to sports. In addition, characteristics such as "Being experienced", "Being able to work in team", "Having High Communication Skills" and "Flexible Working Hours" can be said to be important characteristics in personnel selection and during the continuation of the employment. Job experience (being experienced) is also indicated alongside the other characteristics in selection criteria for the job applicants who applied for the job by the Department of Sport Recreation (2003). Patterson and Allen (1996) have defined some skills for success in career in the new century and give place to teamwork in these skills. In addition, NACE (2005) conducted a study and determined that employers give importance to communication skills and teamwork abilities in selection of candidates who will apply for a job and for the continuation of the employment (Doğu, Sevimli, Durusoy, 2013). 91 office@penseejournal.com

Pensee Journal Vol 76, No. 2;Feb 2014 As a result, it was seen that positions of "subscription services" and "sports news editor" are found to be new positions at job ads.
