Lake Tanganyika : Lake Tanganyika By Stephen Bernard Where It’s Located on a Map : Where It’s Located on a Map Great Rift Valley- Lake Tanganyika : Great Rift Valley- Lake Tanganyika Located on the Western Rift Valley The lake is about 773 m (2,536 ft.) above sea level There are steep side-walls reaching 2,000 m (6,561 ft) above the shoreline on the western side Location in Africa : Location in Africa Lake Tanganyika borders four countries It borders Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania, Burundi, and Zambia The majority of the lake borders DRC at 45% Tanzania at 41% Also borders Zambia at 7% Burundi at 7% 41% 45% Dimensions : Dimensions Length: 660 km (410 mi.) Length of Shoreline: 1,900 km (1,180.6053 mi.) Width: 16-72 km (10-45 mi.) Volume: 19,000 km3 Surface Area: 32,600 km2 (12,586.93 sq. mi.) Mean Depth: 570 m (1,870.0787 ft) Max Depth: 1,470 m (4,822.8346 ft) Catchment Size: 263,000 km2 (101,544.87 sq. mi.) Catchment/Surface Area Ratio: 7:1 A lot of the lake’s coastline is a high escarpment About the Lake : About the Lake Discovered in 1887 by two British explorers Age: 2 million - 20 million years before present Residence Time: 440.0 years River Basin: Congo Lake Region: Africa Great Lakes Origin: Tectonic It was formed by the great rift valley Trophic State: Oligotrophic Type: Fresh, Permanent, Natural Water Level: Unregulated Geographic Importance : Geographic Importance It is the longest freshwater lake in the world One of the less than 20 ancient lakes around the world 2nd biggest lake in Africa behind lake Victoria 2nd deepest lake in the world behind Lake Baikal 3rd largest lake by volume exceeded only by Caspian and Baikal About 1 million people live around the lake The major cities near the lake are Bujumbura and Kigoma There are around 10 million living in its basin Economical Value : Economical Value It is a source of fish for consumption and trade The land around it is very fertile, only a little fertilizer is needed A vital transport and communications link between the countries bordering it Main products or major industries Agriculture: Maize, cotton, tobacco, rice, sugar-cane, sisal, coffee, beans, groundnut, cassava, cattle and goats Manufacturing: Textile, leather, brewing, food and cement industry Mining: Tin, copper and coal. Ecosystem of the Lake : Ecosystem of the Lake One of the richest freshwater ecosystems in the world Home to more than 2,000 plant and animal species About 600 of these species exist nowhere else in the world outside the Lake Tanganyika watershed Almost all of the fish in the lake live above a depth of 600 ft. This is do to the low levels of oxygen which makes its depths “fossil water” Slide 10:  FISH!!!!!! : FISH!!!!!! Fish : Fish More than 500 species of fish live in the lake It is estimated that 25%-40% protein for the people living around the lake comes from fish Currently there are around 100,000 people directly involved in the fisheries operating from almost 800 sites Lake Tanganyika fish can be found exported throughout East Africa. Commercial fishing began in the 1950s and since then the lake has been over fished In 1995 the total catch was around 180,000 tons Former industrial fisheries which boomed in the 1980s have collapsed Cichlid Fish : Cichlid Fish Lake Tanganyika is home to over 250 cichlid fish species African cichlid fish are the largest and most diverse radiation of vertebrate species in the world They range in size from 2 inches to 14 inches African cichlid fish are the largest and most diverse radiation of vertebrate species in the world All most all of them (98%) are endemic to the lake Other Species : Other Species Lake Tanganyika also contains other species flocks including non-cichlid fish, gastropods, bivalves, leeches, crabs, shrimp, jellyfish, sponges and many more Crocs inhabit most of the shorline The slender snouted crocodile (Crocodyluscataphractus) is restricted to Lake Tanganyika Pollution and problems!!! : Pollution and problems!!! Urban pollution sources include boat discharges in the lake Oil and mineral exploration is also a concern Measures need to be introduced to manage the ornamental fish trade and future mining projects Atmospheric Deposition Erosion Invasive Species Polluted runoff Fisheries Pesticides Watershed Management : Watershed Management In 1995 the Global Environment Facility funded a five year project, "Pollution Control and Other Measures to Protect Biodiversity in Lake Tanganyika.” This plan was created in order to keep the lake clean One of the outcomes of the project was a Strategic Action Program for the Sustainable Management of Lake Tanganyika (SAP) Watershed Management (cont) : Watershed Management (cont) The SAP outlines a regional framework for national and regional priority actions to achieve the objectives set out by the participating countries As of 2001, priorities that had been identified included: urban pollution from Bujumbura, sedimentation from mid-sized catchments, overfishing in the littoral zone and habitat destruction. Popular Activities : Popular Activities Sport fishing is very popular here and catches include the goliath tigerfish and Nile perch Swimming is great but only swim in the Mpulungu area Warm, clear, salt free water that changes from silky stillness, to high waves for a great body surf Boating Taking the ferry from Zambia Visiting the local cities Slide 20: Activities Works Cited : Works Cited http://badmanstropicalfish.com/cichlid-pictures/EAST_AFRICA.GIF http://www.nsf.gov/od/lpa/news/03/images/tanganyika_mahale.jpg http://www.njake.com/lake%20tanganyika.jpg http://www.nsf.gov/od/lpa/news/03/images/tanganyika_gombestream.jpg http://www.worldlakes.org/lakedetails.asp?lakeid=8362 http://www.encyclopedia.com/doc/1E1-TangnykaLk.html http://www.bigskycichlids.com/images/Lake_Tanganyika_map.gif http://www.biomedcentral.com/content/figures/1471-2148-7-137-1.jpg Works Cited (Cont.) : Works Cited (Cont.) http://www.mapsofworld.com/tanzania/tourism/lake-tanganyika.html http://www.go2africa.com/tanzania/lake-tanganyika http://www.lake-district.gov.uk/index/learning/facts_and_figures/catchment.htm http://tinypic.com/es6xhv.jpg http://media-2.web.britannica.com/eb-media/74/4574-004-438026F9.jpg http://media-2.web.britannica.com/eb-media/73/4573-004-2B5E910B.jpg http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/582434/Lake-Tanganyika http://dannysdesktop.themesunlimited.com/Files/nasa/ZaireLakeTanganyika.jpg http://www.handsofhopedisasterreliefservices.org/b2b/pics/African_Cichlid_Fish.jpg http://animal-world.com/encyclo/fresh/cichlid/images/JackDempsey(Blue)WFCiam_C413.jpg http://www.sciencefriday.com/news/012507/cichlid2.jpg http://www.zambiatourism.com/travel/places/tanganyi.htm THE END? : THE END?
