NICARAGUA BACKGROUND • It was discovered on September 12th, 1502 by Christopher Columbus in his 4th & last trip to the Americas • The Pacific coast was settled as a Spanish colony in the early 16th century • Independence from Spain was declared in 1821 • Britain occupied the Caribbean Coast in the first half of the 19th century

NICARAGUA GOVERNMENT • Nicaragua is a constitutional democracy with Executive, Legislative, Judicial, and Electoral branches of government • The constitution guarantees freedom of speech, religion, and movement within the country, as well as foreign travel & emigration • The President and the members of the National Assembly are elected to concurrent 5-year terms
