Keeping Your Employees Focused on Work If you're a business owner or manager, you're no doubt well aware of how difficult it can be to keep your employees focused on work. The Internet doesn't make it easy. Although access to the World Wide Web definitely benefits businesses in many ways, it also presents a constant temptation to even the hardest-working, most loyal employees. In fact, workers spending too much time on the Internet doing personal tasks during the workday - also known as "cyberloafing" - has become an increasingly common problem that employers deal with day in and day out. There are several methods that companies have used in an effort to monitor employee Internet usage. You'll find a huge array of products available on the marketplace designed to resolve the cyberloafing issue: Pc monitoring software or "spyware," Internet blocking products, and a variety of other tools. While these may be effective to a certain degree, none of these products offer a complete solution. It's fine to attempt to block sites that aren't related to business activity, and it may actually help you to know which worker is visiting which Web sites during the workday. However, if your employees are typical, they probably carry smart phones or notepad computers with them every day. This means that even if you tried to block certain sites or monitor their computer usage, you still wouldn't be getting a clear picture of how your workers are spending their time. Thanks to smart phone technology, your employees have access to any Web sites they're interested in 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on their own personal devices. The only real way to keep your workers focused on business-related tasks is to utilize an employee performance measurement tool. Rather than approaching the problem from a punitive point of view, why not resolve the situation using a positive method? Once you're able to accurately assess how much time your employees are engaged in productive activity (rather than how much time they're wasting), you'll be better able to develop effective ways to motivate them to do a better job in the future. If cyberloafing is a problem in your workplace, follow these simple steps to address the issue: 1. Find a reliable employee performance measurement tool. 2. Assess how much time each worker is spending engaged in business-related activities each day. 3. Develop a minimum work performance standard that all employees are required to meet, and make sure that every employee understands what is expected of him or her. 4. Find out what would best motivate each employee to do a better job. 5. Challenge your employees to do better.

6. Each time an employee improves his or her performance, recognize that accomplishment by rewarding a job well done. Keeping your employees focused on work is simply a matter of tracking their progress, motivating them to do better and rewarding improved performance.
