Finnish Wellbeing Center Project in Sendai, Japan:  Finnish Wellbeing Center Project in Sendai, Japan Finpro Reference Case Finnish Wellbeing Center:  Finnish Wellbeing Center Finpro Innovation Project Finpro Japan saw the changing needs of the aging population in Japan as a potential market for Finnish wellbeing sector products and services and took the initiative to establish a Finnish Wellbeing Center Project. The project formed a part of Tekes iWELL-technology program. 16 Finnish companies and several organizations in Finland and Japan are involved in the project. In May 2003 11 companies founded the Finnish Wellbeing Center Ltd. A cooperation agreement was signed with the city of Sendai in June 2001. The Concept is based on the high quality and economic way to promote older persons’ autonomous living and quality of life using the solid Finnish theoretical know-how and studies practical implementation co-operation of experts product development. FWBC Finland Oy Ltd was founded in May 2003 by eleven (11) companies, which were members of the FWBC project. Finnish Wellbeing Center:  Finnish Wellbeing Center Finpro Innovation Project The Finnish Wellbeing Center will be constructed by the city of Sendai, the concept and technologies applied in the center will be provided by Finnish elderly care experts and companies. In the beginning of 2004 Finpro leased Director Mauno Konttinen from STAKES, as a project manager for the R & D Unit. The project, worth approx. 33 MEUR, is the largest Finnish elderly care project to be implemented abroad and will be accomplished by the year 2005. continues Another object is the construction of a Research and Development Unit in the vicinity of the Wellbeing Center. Our Partner is City of Sendai :  Our Partner is City of Sendai Targets of the Finnish Wellbeing Center Project:  Targets of the Finnish Wellbeing Center Project To design a Finnish Wellbeing Center compatible within the Japanese context for the older persons in Sendai based on Finnish care concept, architecture and technology. that is versatile and supports older persons’ autonomous living at home and becomes an integrated part of the community. that enables fruitful co-operation between Finnish and Japanese researchers and companies engaged in activities related to welfare of older persons. Technologies Applied :  Technologies Applied Architectural design House automation technology Safety technology IT software and communication technology Furniture for elderly and interior design Care & nursing Preventive care and rehabilitation Management & consulting Project Results (as in December 2003):  Possibility to distribute the Finnish Elderly Care concept and FWBC companies also in other markets. Most potential markets are in developed countries with low birth rates having high proportion of aged population and willing to invest in senior citizens, e.g. Nordic countries, EU and Canada. Match-making of Finpro, Finnish organizations and companies with Japanese business partners. A long-term cooperation agreement was signed with the City of Sendai. A new model for the internationalization of SMEs developed. Project Results (as in December 2003) Coming Up Next:  Coming Up Next Spring 2004 the Finnish suppliers of equipment will be chosen. The Finnish suppliers will have a permanent showroom for their products and services in the R & D Center. The construction will be ready by the end 2004. The R & D Center will also identify new opportunities for Finnish companies. The future needs will be seen after the trial period.
