PowerPoint Presentation: John F. Kennedy: The Camelot Years PowerPoint Presentation: The years in which Kennedy held office have come to be known as the Camelot Years, nicknamed after John F. Kennedy’s favorite play. PowerPoint Presentation: His tenure was described as "Camelot," and the luster of his presidency has remained bright, in an almost fairy tale fashion. PowerPoint Presentation: The analogy refers to the fact that, the Knights of the Roundtable, led by the idealistic Arthur, served justice, much as John Kennedy had done during his short time in the White House. That was his Camelot: the promotion of heroes who rode forth to ensure universal justice. PowerPoint Presentation: Jacqueline Kennedy helped build Camelot. It was she who suggested the picturesque South Lawn of the White House as the site for ceremonies with visiting officials, and it was she who immortalized his presidency as Camelot with an interview after his death. PowerPoint Presentation: The interviewer/writer, Theodore White, wrote that Camelot represented “a magic moment in American history, when gallant men danced with beautiful women, when great deeds were done, when artists, writers, and poets met at the White House, and the barbarians beyond the walls held back.” PowerPoint Presentation: John F. Kennedy had a talent for knowing how to control his image in the white house. He was the first President to ever broadcast press conferences on a regular basis on television. By doing this he enhanced him intimacy with the public. He fed into the idealized image of the confident President. PowerPoint Presentation: Kennedy was also extremely telegenic and had exceptional charisma with people. It came out when he campaigned endless hours with the rest of his family. Combined with a beautiful wife and two kids, it made the perfect American family, which the Kennedy family played into. PowerPoint Presentation: JFK was the personification of cool control. His youth and telegenic qualities made him an American folk hero. His wife Jackie, a daughter of high society, was the beautiful wife who was an impeccable dresser. Jackie's clothes set new trends across the country for women. PowerPoint Presentation: Her overprotective nature with their young kids solidified her image as a devoted domestic mother, and she also promoted important cultural events -- music, theater, the arts -- at the White House. PowerPoint Presentation: The children complimented the image of the All-American family. Though Jackie detested their photographs to be taken while in play, Kennedy knew that that was exactly what America wanted to see. PowerPoint Presentation: When Jackie was away, JFK would often have many snapshots of Caroline and John-John (nicknamed by the press) playing under his desk, in their playrooms, in the Rose Garden, in their schoolhouses, throwing parties, etc. PowerPoint Presentation: These images were not only charming in their simplicity and glamour but, to most Americans, a representation of the life they were already leading. PowerPoint Presentation: With the validation of their President doing it, it became  the  way to live. PowerPoint Presentation: Overall, many elements made the Kennedy years unique and exciting: a youthful president not only intelligent -- with a voracious appetite for knowledge -- but also good-looking and vital.. PowerPoint Presentation: an irresistibly young and appealing family.. PowerPoint Presentation: a leader who, in spite of his wealth and connections, appeared down-to-earth and human, and projected a sense of warmth and fun.. PowerPoint Presentation: and a glamorous First Couple -- Jack and Jackie -- who brought grace, elegance and a sense of royalty to a traditionally bland office, was something that the public fully embraced. PowerPoint Presentation: In the interview after Kennedy’s death, Jackie invoked the name of Camelot, saying: “There'll be great presidents again … but there'll never be another Camelot.”
