A Woman’s Glory : A Woman’s Glory But if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her; for her hair is given to her for a covering. (1 Corinthians 11:15 NKJV) Points to Ponder : Points to Ponder Why is 1 Corinthians 11 Difficult What Was Happening at Corinth? Diagramming the Issue Headship and Divine Order Where Can a Woman Pray and Prophesy? Uncovered Versus Shorn Arguments Considered What is “Long Hair?” Does it really make any difference today? Concluding Parallel Why is 1 Corinthians 11 Difficult? : Why is 1 Corinthians 11 Difficult? 1. Textual and Contextual Difficulties 2. Cultural Pressure Regarding Hair Styles 3. Unwillingness to Submit to Bible Teaching Which Do You Suppose God Will Judge Most Severely? What Was Going On At Corinth? : What Was Going On At Corinth? Several Theories: 1. Women were throwing off their veils as they abused their new found equality in Christ. 2. Women were abandoning social norms of “submission” and were in danger of making the church look bad in the community. 3. Christian women were chopping their hair and were taking on the look of the local prostitutes as they abused their freedom in Christ. Theory Must Never Obscure the Clarity of the Text What Was Going On At Corinth? : 1. Scholars do not agree whether or not Corinthian women wore veils. 2. Jew and Gentile women had different customs and attire. The church at Corinth was probably made up of both so it is difficult to determine what local scene Paul is addressing. 3. Paul’s arguments supercede local custom. He appeals to Creation and Nature to make his point. Thus the real issue is not one about local custom. The Real Issue Is Bigger Than Corinth What Was Going On At Corinth? Diagramming the Issue : Diagramming the Issue Headship Submission A woman’s covering shows her role in God’s order Gender Distinction Nature makes a distinction between men and women Paul uses two lines of reasoning to demonstrate the headship issue Headship And Divine Order : Headship And Divine Order Now I praise you, brethren, that you remember me in all things and keep the traditions just as I delivered them to you. But I want you to know that the head of every man is Christ, the head of woman is man, and the head of Christ is God. (1 Corinthians 11:2-3 NKJV) Slide 8: The Divine Order of Authority God Christ Man Woman Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God. Ephesians 5:21 Slide 9: The Umbrella of Submission Long Hair is a Symbol of Biblical Submission God Christ Man Woman Praying and Prophesying : Praying and Prophesying Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonors his head. But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head, (1 Corinthians 11:4-5 NKJV) Slide 11: Every man Male - Christian Praying or prophesying, Christian Life Having his head covered, Down the Head Dishonors his head. Christ / Own Headship But every woman who Female - Christian Prays or prophesies Christian Life Head uncovered Unveiled, Down Covering Dishonors her head, Man / Self / Christ (1 Corinthians 11:4-5 NKJV) Analyzing the Text: Slide 12: May a Woman Pray/Prophesy in Church? Let your women keep silent in the churches, for they are not permitted to speak; but they are to be submissive, as the law also says. And if they want to learn something, let them ask their own husbands at home; for it is shameful for women to speak in church. (1 Corinthians 14:34-35 NKJV) Obviously Paul is Addressing Something Other than Public Worship Praying/Prophesying Synechodoche = Denotes All of Christian Life Uncovered and Shorn : Uncovered and Shorn For that is one and the same as if her head were shaved. For if a woman is not covered, let her also be shorn. But if it is shameful for a woman to be shorn or shaved, let her be covered. (1 Corinthians 11:6 NKJV) Slide 14: Uncovered: Akatakaluptos (Without a covering down) Shorn: Keiro (Shear, as in sheep, or as in Acts 18:18 of Paul) Shaved: Xurao (Shave, Shear – from Razor) Shame: Aischron (Shameful, Base, Filthy, Not according to Decency) Covered: Katakalupto (cover wholly, veil, hide) Analyzing the Text: SHAME: Same as in 1 Cor 14:35 – Shame for Women to Speak in Church To Be Uncovered = As Shameful As Shaved Slide 15: What is the Covering? Paul has not specified the “covering” “Shorn” hints that it might be “hair.” We must wait until verse 15 to find out. Biblical Interpretation Requires that We Not Jump to Conclusions Arguments Considered : Arguments Considered Argument from Order of Creation Argument from the Angels Argument from Nature All Three Arguments Supercede Local Customs and Make the Teaching Applicable Today Argument from Order of Creation : Argument from Order of Creation For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but woman is the glory of man. For man is not from woman, but woman from man. Nor was man created for the woman, but woman for the man. (1 Corinthians 11:7-9 NKJV) Slide 18: Argument based on Headship and Order of Creation Man Reflects the Glory of God Man Was Created 1st and has the Headship Man is the Reflection of God’s Work on the 6th Day Woman is the Reflection of Man for Eve came from Adam Woman was Created 2nd as a Helper to Man Analyzing the Text: When a Man covers his physical head he symbolically covers his Creator and asserts Superiority over God. Argument from the Angels : Argument from the Angels For this reason the woman ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels. (1 Corinthians 11:10 NKJV) Slide 20: Difficult Verse – Because of Angels??? Various Theories: 1. Angels are watching our Assemblies 2. Angels, like humans, are assigned a hierarchy 3. Angels show constant submission to God Symbol of Authority on Her Head: 1. Something which shows her submission 2. The covering symbolizes woman’s role Analyzing the Text: Whatever Else Paul May Have Had in Mind, Angels are the Epitome of Submission Slide 21: Nevertheless, neither is man independent of woman, nor woman independent of man, in the Lord. For as woman came from man, even so man also comes through woman; but all things are from God. (1 Corinthians 11:11-12 NKJV) A Quick Parenthetical: The Creation Order does not assign higher intrinsic value to the male. Submission is not a sign of inferiority. All are ultimately submissive to God – all depend on Him Slide 22: Judge among yourselves. Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? Does not even nature itself teach you . . . (1 Corinthians 11:13-15 NKJV) Argument from Common Sense and Nature Slide 23: Judge among yourselves – “Use a little common sense” Is it proper – “Does it fit with God’s Order” Doth Not Nature Teach – Nature defines a distinction between the sexes. Even the natural order of things sets up a distinction between men and women. Analyzing the Text: Nature = God’s General Order of Things What is Long Hair : What is Long Hair Does not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him? But if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her; for her hair is given to her for a covering. (1 Corinthians 11:14-15 NKJV) Slide 25: Long Hair: (komao: verb) – Literally: to grow the hair, A verb For a Covering: (anti peribolaion) – in the place of a veil Analyzing the Text: Komao– Something She Continually Does, Not Something She Has! Komao: Present Active Subjunctive Continuous Action Slide 26: “Long Hair” is not actually in the Greek text. The Greek text uses a verb – not a noun and an adjective. The English is misleading this this verse. Analyzing the Text: Godly Women Continually Grow Their Hair! Slide 27: The Issue is NOT Length: The Issue is “Growing.” “Long” and “Short” are relative terms. Paul’s command to “grow” removes subjectivity When a woman refuses to “cut” her hair she fulfills 1 Cor 11. The only consistent way to grow hair is to never cut it. Analyzing the Text: Godly Women Continually Grow Their Hair! Slide 28: May a Woman Trim Her Hair? The answer is NOT up to her and her husband. Cutting violates the verb action of “Komao” (to grow) The Action Paul Prescribes is Continuous The Action Paul Prescribes is Not Optional. The moment a woman trims her hair she inhibits its growth Analyzing the Text: Godly Women Continually Grow Their Hair! An Old Testament Parallel : All the days of the vow of his separation no razor shall come upon his head; until the days are fulfilled for which he separated himself to the LORD, he shall be holy. Then he shall let the locks of the hair of his head grow. (Numbers 6:5 NKJV) An Old Testament Parallel Growing Hair = Never Cut It Does it Make Any Difference Today? : Does it Make Any Difference Today? If “uncut hair” is unnecessary today then what symbol should women use to show submission? Clearly some symbol of submission is absolutely required by God. Paul’s Arguments are NOT based on Culture or Changing Styles. Slide 31: Let’s Be Honest: 1. Would sisters in the church today cut their hair IF fashion/society demanded uncut hair? 2. Do sisters cut their hair because they believe the bible teaches they should? Or do they cut their hair due to convenience and fashion? 3. Are we approaching the text with a desire to honestly discover its meaning, or to somehow find a loop hole that will allow us to cut our hair? Slide 32: But if anyone seems to be contentious, we have no such custom, nor do the churches of God. (1 Corinthians 11:16 NKJV) Concluding Thoughts Slide 33: We have no such custom: The apostle’s have no other custom than what Paul taught. Paul is not negating what he has argued previously. Nor do the churches of God: The brotherhood at large practiced what Paul taught. Corinth was out of step with the brotherhood. Analyzing the Text: Uncut Hair Was NOT a Personal Option
