Research Station Update July 2006:  Research Station Update July 2006 Centre for Marine Studies The intention of this brief slide presentation is to bring you up to date with recent exciting building projects and infrastructural improvements that have occurred on our island research stations. Centre for Marine Studies Professor Ove Hoegh-Guldberg Director Centre for Marine Studies University of Queensland Slide3:  The Centre for Marine Studies at the University of Queensland manages three research stations on the east coast of Australia. Low Isles Research Station Heron Island Research Station Moreton Bay Research Station The University of Queensland St. Lucia, Brisbane, Australia Heron Island and Low Isles research stations are located on the northern and southern Great Barrier Reef. Moreton Bay Research Station is on North Stradbroke Island in Moreton Bay Centre for Marine Studies Slide4:  Moreton Bay Research Station Slide6:  Moreton Bay Research Station has experienced recent modifications and improvements to research and accommodation facilities: 2004 - The large research lab partitioned into smaller labs. - One research lab PC2 ready 2005 - Separate accommodation on adjacent property - Constant temperature room with internet CCTV - Glass house available (-long term experiment concluded) - Backup emergency power generator - Commercial kitchen installed in main building 2006 - Onsite caterer now provides all meals. - High speed internet connection (ADSL) Moreton Bay Research Station www.cms.uq.edu.au/MBRS/ Slide7:  MBRS equipment and scientific services are constantly being upgraded to meet user demand. Boats recently fitted with shade canopies Additional computers installed and older machines upgraded Aquarium facilities enlarged Dive tanks can now be filled onsite Reverse Osmosis water is now available in the labs Large 10kL “shark” tank with recirculating water Additional data projectors installed in teaching areas and conference rooms Moreton Bay Research Station www.cms.uq.edu.au/MBRS/ Slide8:  Heron Island Research Station Slide10:  There have been a number of major improvements to the research infrastructure and group accommodation facilities on HIRS. Recent construction projects: 2003 - Group dormitory style accommodation 2003 - Multipurpose building:Classroom/Laboratory/Conference 2005 - Upgraded pipeline supplying seawater 2006 - Research laboratory: 9 research laboratories Instrument rooms Computer room Library - Coral Deck - “Shark” Pool 16m2x1m Heron Island Research Station www.cms.uq.edu.au/HIRS/ Slide11:  Heron Island Research Station New research facilities and services include: 9 well equipped laboratories, 2 with fume cupboards 2 well equipped instrument rooms Large flow through saltwater aquaria complex Recirculating saltwater aquaria Indoor aquaria / dark room for light controlled experiments Well stocked laboratory consumable store Computer room (satellite internet) Large sun exposed aquaria deck 4 deep round aquaria- 1.5m diameter x 1m deep Telephones in laboratories www.cms.uq.edu.au/HIRS/ Visit the HIRS website for more detail www.cms.uq.edu.au/HIRS/ Slide12:  Heron Island Research Station New vessels add to the already excellent Boating & Diving services available on Heron Island: www.cms.uq.edu.au/HIRS/ 2 new semi-inflatable boats. Capacity 15 people + skipper More Station staff now have coxswain and dive-master qualifications for research based boating & diving activities HIRS now offers wetsuit and snorkelling gear hire (please confirm availability before arrival) Slide15:  Low Isles Research Station LIRS has recently undergone major renovations to the research laboratory and accommodation facilities. The research laboratory, located underneath the house, has basic laboratory equipment available: • Autoclave • Laminar Flow Cabinet • Centrifuge • Balances • Heater Stirrer • Orbital Shaker • Germination Incubator • Drying Oven • Muffler Furnace • Basic Glassware www.cms.uq.edu.au/LIRS/ Slide16:  The upstairs accommodation has been fully renovated. LIRS has accommodation for up to 8 guests - 3 rooms with 2 single beds - 1 room with 1 double bed (Bedding is supplied and laundered by station staff) A refurbished kitchen Communal living areas which are modest but comfortable. Telephone Cooking is with bottled gas or barbeque, electricity is supplied by diesel generator and water is pressurised stored rainwater.
