WHAT IS CURRICULUM? DIFFERENT APPROACHES TOWARDS DEVELOPING ISLAMIC CURRICULA. CONCEPTUAL FRAME WORK OF ISLAMIC EDUCATION. ISLAMIC CONCEPT OF EDUCATION : ISLAMIC CONCEPT OF EDUCATION Allah Says in Surah Al-Baqarah: 30) Behold, your Lord said to the angels: “I will create A vicegerent on Earth.” They said: “Will you place therein one who will make Mischief therein and shed blood? While we do celebrate Your praises And glorify Your holy (name)?” He said: “I know what you know not.” Slide 7: And He taught Adam the names of all things; then He placed them Before the angels, and said: “Tell me the names of these if you are right.” They said: “Glory to You, of knowledge We have none, save what You have taught us: in truth it is you Who are perfect in knowledge and wisdom.” He said: “O Adam! Tell them, Their names.” When he had told them, their names, Allah said: “Did I not tell you That I know the secrets of heaven And earth, and I know what you reveal And what you conceal.?” Slide 8: Allah Says in Surah Al-Alaq: Proclaim! (or read) in the name of your Lord and Cherisher, Who created- Created man, out of A (mere) clot of Congealed blood: Proclaim! And your Lord Is Most Bountiful- He Who taught (The use of) the Pen- Taught man that Which he knew not. What is knowledge? : What is knowledge? Knowledge is defined as: Expertise, and skills acquired by a person through experience or education; the theoretical or practical understanding of a subject. justified true belief. ISLAMIC CONCEPT OF KNOWLEDGE : ISLAMIC CONCEPT OF KNOWLEDGE The term used for knowledge in Arabic is ‘ilm’, which, has a much wider connotation than its synonyms in English and other Western languages. ‘Knowledge’ falls short of expressing all the aspects of ‘ilm’. Knowledge in the Western world means information about something, divine or corporeal, while ‘ilm’ is an all-embracing term covering theory, action and education. IMPORTANCE OF KNOWLEDGE IN ISLAM : IMPORTANCE OF KNOWLEDGE IN ISLAM Allah Says in Surah Al-Mujadalah: Allah will Raise up, to (suitable) ranks (And degrees), those of you Who believe and who have Been granted Knowledge. Similarly, Allah Says in Surah Al-Fatir: Those truly fear Allah, Among His Servants, Who have knowledge SAYINGS OF PROPHET MUHAMMED (SAW) : SAYINGS OF PROPHET MUHAMMED (SAW) Seek knowledge, as who seeks it for the sake of Allah, does a righteous job. Whosoever makes effort to gain knowledge, is like a person who worships Allah. A knowledgeable man does not die. Scholars are the heir of the prophet. Knowledge makes a person to fear Allah. Whosoever talks about knowledge, is like a person who praises Allah. IMAM AL-GHAZALI’S VIEWS : IMAM AL-GHAZALI’S VIEWS Religious knowledge It is acquired from the Qur’an and Sunnah. It is the most dignified knowledge and it is without doubt. secular knowledge The knowledge is needed to enhance the understanding of the religious knowledge since it was a revelation. TYPES OF SECULAR KNOWLEDGE : TYPES OF SECULAR KNOWLEDGE Beneficial knowledge: Those sciences, which benefit society and help it to progress, e.g. medical knowledge and mathematics. Accordingly, the acquisition of these sciences and disciplines is Fard al-Kifayyah, Neutral Knowledge: Those disciplines that will not really enhance one’s beneficial knowledge but there is nothing wrong if they are studied, e.g. the history of England. Harmful Knowledge: Those disciplines which are harmful, such as black magic and gambling. It is therefore, Haram to acquire such knowledge. WHAT IS CURRICULUM? : WHAT IS CURRICULUM? The textbook is NOT the curriculum! Curriculum is the entire body of knowledge that a school has decided a student should learn at each level/grade. curriculum is based on what we think should be taught, therefore curriculum is based on our values – what we believe is important. DIFFERENT APPROACHES TOWARDS DEVELOPING ISLAMIC CURRICULA. : DIFFERENT APPROACHES TOWARDS DEVELOPING ISLAMIC CURRICULA. limited curriculum approach to put all Islamic knowledge/thinking into one Islamic Studies class, while the remainder of the curriculum remains secular. more traditional and for the time being, more practical. integrated curriculum approach to rewrite the curriculum of every subject so that Islamic knowledge/thinking is integrated into every subject. An ideal approach, which will take years to become practical. CONCEPTUAL FRAME WORK OF ISLAMIC EDUCATION : CONCEPTUAL FRAME WORK OF ISLAMIC EDUCATION PHILOSOPHY OF ISLAMIC EDUCATION : PHILOSOPHY OF ISLAMIC EDUCATION An education that develops a Muslim intellectually, spiritually and emotionally. One that brings him/her closer to his/her Creator and develops him/her into a responsible social being. An education that is relevant to its time and era and integrates knowledge, life and social skills, so as to generate responsible members of the community, nation and the world. CORE VALUES AND LEARNING PRINCIPLES : CORE VALUES AND LEARNING PRINCIPLES Spirit of Inquiry & Discovery. Spiritual & Character Education. Challenging and Inspirational Ideas. Effective teaching and Learning. Instruction. Assessment. A VISION OF MUSLIM COMMUNITY OF EXCELLENCE : A VISION OF MUSLIM COMMUNITY OF EXCELLENCE Holds strongly to Islamic principles Morally and spiritually strengthened to face the challenges. Enlightened about Islamic history and civilisation. Believes that a good Muslim is also a good citizen. Progressive, beyond rituals or form. Enlightened and appreciates richness of other civilizations Inclusive and practices pluralism. To be a blessing to other communities. A model and inspiration for others COMPREHENSIVE ISLAMIC EDUCATION PROGRAMMES : COMPREHENSIVE ISLAMIC EDUCATION PROGRAMMES Slide 23: Kids aL.I.V.E.(5-8 year old children.) It should aim at presenting Islamic Education to these young children in a fun and stimulating way in accordance with the way young children of that age learns and develops. Tweens aL.I.V.E.(9 – 12 years old children). It should aim at teaching Islam in a discovering and practical manner so as to build their understanding, extend their appreciation and help them to start practicing Islam. Slide 24: Teens aL.I.V.E.(13-16 years old children) It should aim at providing an opportunity for teenagers to find their identity, self-esteem and purpose in life through inspiring, exciting and interesting Islamic education lessons and to pick up skills on decision making, communication, relationships etc that are crucial for them to sail through this stage of their lives. Slide 25: Youth aL.I.V.E (17 – 24 years old). It should aim at providing them with a platform to discuss religious issues at a broader and more intensive level where research and individual readings play an important part. Leadership vis-a vis Vice-Gerency issues are also discussed so as to prepare the youth for the challenges ahead as future leaders. DESIRED OUTCOMES OF ISLAMIC EDUCATION : DESIRED OUTCOMES OF ISLAMIC EDUCATION Moral individuals, responsible towards their Creator and to all His creations. Imbibed with Taqwa, self-monitored (muraqabah) and conscientious. Active and responsible partners in human endeavors participating in community and nation building, and as global citizens Able to explain and communicate with others the teachings of Islam in an informed and logical manner. Practicing Muslims, committed to the betterment of human life. Islamic Education Content : Islamic Education Content Beliefs and Practices. Life Skills and Character. Social and Civilizational Islam. Quranic Literacy Skills.
