Redefining the entrepreneurial spirit, ENACTUS Every crisis creates opportunity, every struggle offers a chance to rediscover. Everything we do is born from the ability to see potential where others can’t. Guided by this vision, ENACTUS, a non-profitable organization was founded in 1975, in United States. Then it was merely a
vision with just a handful of people ready to give a concrete shape to their idea but as it is rightly said, “For every castle to be built you need to put the first brick only then you’ll find hands to construct the entire edifice.” With this view, Enactus sprouted its tiny root which has today spread out to 39 countries with more than 70,000 students associated with it. Lets have a glimpse of this organization comprising people driven by the fire to change in the world and make it sustainable. EN•ACT•US Entrepreneurial—To perceive an opportunity and the talent to create value from that opportunity. Action—The willingness to do something and the commitment to see it through even when the outcome is not guaranteed. US—A group of people who see themselves connected in some important way, individuals that are part of a greater whole. What do you understand when you here the world ‘change’? Well, the obvious answer will be deviation from the normal course of action. Correct…..now let’s apply this definition to the scenario around us. For instance let’s take some basic issues
like sanitation , malnutrition, no electricity etc. Most all of us belong to middle or high class society having the basic amenities of food and living. While lying on our couch and watching our favorite TV shows with a sip of coffee, we often forget that there are people who are in the dark sans power. Definitely it is the work of the government to cater to the basic needs of a person but being a citizen there is a lot which we can do to bring in the long desired “change”. ENACTUS made a bid and help came in. Many sponsors provided monetary support to the organization to carry on its work of lighting rural areas. This is one of the many examples which Enactus has initiated. ENACTUS is clear in its objectives: It strives to bring together top leaders of today and tomorrow to create a better, more sustainable world through the positive power of business. It believes that all of us have an entrepreneurial spirit in us and it aims at harnessing the business talents of our network members to make a unique and valuable contribution to the world. Enactus aims to become a perennial source of effective, responsible business talent. And in this entire process it is
ready to operate as a non-profit organization based on financial strength and staff leadership. Enactus today is a full grown tree and one among its numerous branches is “ENACTUSIITK”. A group of students from IIT Kanpur joined this initiative. Letting the entrepreneurial spirits gain its dominance ENACTUS IITK came up with two projects named ‘Agaaz’ and ‘Pakvan’. ‘PakVan’ is the brainchild of an IITK student ‘Aksshat’, who devised the concept of “Food on Wheels”. All of us often become unhappy at the very sight of mess food and though a canteen is there, the very taste and the oil prevents us from consuming it. Here Aksshat stepped in to bring a change. Pakvan’ team was born which aims at providing healthy and tasty food. ‘PakVan’ has cooks who lost their jobs following privatization of our messes. With sufficient funds collected, the project pioneered the baking business which is a very lucrative venture. With profits accumulated and the delivery business bringing in constant funds, ‘PakVan’ hopes to start an outlet that serves regional delicacies on demand and deliver. The Project endeavours to rehabilitate the former mess workers. It will also help to impart intense professional
trainings to the cooks. Hence considering the innovative idea and the noble cause associated with it, the ‘PakVan’ team deserves a loud appreciation. Another ongoing work is ‘Agaaz’. Project Agaaz focuses on utilizing waste paper to empower people in need. Enactus has developed a business model employing women of economically backward communities who have been provided a set up to prepare decorative items using reused paper. The aim is loud and clear: SAVE PAPER REDUCE, REUSE and RECYCLE “ Incidentally, most ideas have their roots in some inspiration, ‘Agaaz’ founders found in it crushed papers. We all have dustbins in room full of crushed papers which we prefer to throw away. But I call it creativity as it was out of trash that innovative products came out. Women from nearby villages named Nankari are called on the campus and assigned team members train them in various paper products ranging from baskets, tissue paper stands, lampshades and many more . These women then work to prepare these products in a large number. Then steps in the marketing team to prepare the market for sale of these
products, which bring in money for these women. Recently, we provided lampshades for decoration on the campus fest Antaragni. The tiny bulbs in the cover of paper lampshades drew huge appreciations . But the way so far and even beyond will not be a bed of roses. Hurdles pave every way . People prefer stability over fragile beauty. Origami products are eye catching but lack in longevity. This problem is like a hole in the roots of our tree threatening the very foundation of the project, but no task in unfathomable and what counts is the determination to overcome it. Agaaz team aims at making their products durable and at the same time focusing greater part of the energy in making goods that find use in day-to-day life and do not demand much maintenance .This may seem a little vague and not “the solution” to the problem but it will definitely try to fill the hole and motivate for greater solutions. Hence with hearts within, lady luck besides and God overhead, this group of enthusiastic students are working to give wings to their ideas .This novel idea of producing eco friendly products into use in society and at the same time helping the needy in Indian villages deserves n opportunity to work across the
country . Wrapping up here are a few lines in praise of this organization: Where others see challenge , we see opportunity While others fear failure, we fear never having tried When others dwell on what is not, we dwell on what CAN be, What SHOULD be, What MUST be And then ACT Turning ideas into actions Actions into progress This is our commitment , Our Quest WE ARE ENACTUS. -Ishita Ankit
