We enjoy good stories… We cannot understand the present if we know nothing about the past… Slide 3: HISTORY TELLS ABOUT THE PAST… WHAT IS HISTORY ? Slide 4: HISTORY IS ABOUT KINGS, SOLDIERS, EXPLORERS, WRITERS, SCIENTISTS, ARTISTS, AND COMMON PEOPLE AND THEIR EVERYDAY LIVES HOW DO WE KNOW ABOUT THE PAST? : HOW DO WE KNOW ABOUT THE PAST? SOME OLD PEOPLE CAN TELL US STORIES OF THE TIMES LONG AGO WHEN THEY WERE KIDS… BUT… WHAT ABOUT VERY-VERY OLD TIMES? : WHAT ABOUT VERY-VERY OLD TIMES? I don’t know I don’t know I don’t know I don’t know ? Slide 7: IF NOBODY CAN TELL US ABOUT THOSE DISTANT TIMES WE NEED SOME EVIDENCE EVIDENCE MAY BE SUCH AS : EVIDENCE MAY BE SUCH AS WRITTEN RECORDS: OLD BOOKS OLD LETTERS OLD MAPS Slide 9: In the earliest times no written records were kept. We find evidence of the past in objects buried in the ground long ago Archeologists : Archeologists Archeologists are the scientists that are digging the sites looking for historic evidence. Slide 11: Putting together a story from archeology is like doing a big puzzle without instruction. There are some pieces but that is only part of the total picture. Slide 13: Archeologists use all kinds of tools, like shovels or buckets, even large digging machines such as bulldozers. Slide 14: Every historical time is “covered” by a layer of land. Slide 15: Layer upon layer, the oldest cities are buried under tons of earth and rock Fossils : Fossils Fossils are natural shapes, such as shells, leaves, and animals. Covered by mud, in time they become as hard as rocks. They tell us what life was like in their time. Slide 17: Tens or hundreds or thousands of years, someone standing here likely saw a very different site…. Slide 22: -Where do the scientists keep important evidences of the Past? -In the Museum.
