How do the Organisational Change Management (OCM)Maturity Model (OCMMM), Change Management Practitioner Competency Model (CMPCM) and the Change Management Body of Knowledge (CMBoK) fit together? Organisational Performance + Practitioner Performance + Underpinning knowledge CMPCM – What should our Change Managers be doing to enable success of each change? (Current standards focus mainly on the project level of the maturity model) OCMMM - How well are we exploiting OCM to improve the performance of our organisation? CMBoK – What core and non-core OCM knowledge underpins practice at all levels of the maturity model? Note: Entry level competency model currently in development
What is a „Body of Knowledge‟?
What is a „Body of Knowledge‟? • Produced by a professional association • Describes and defines the knowledge that underpins effective practice of that profession • The CMBoK: – – – – Identifies key knowledge (structured to make access easier) Defines and describes that knowledge Shows relationships between areas of knowledge and practice Links to valuable reference sources
The CMBoK: • indicates the scope of the knowledge required to practise effectively as a Change Manager in a range of situations • provides definitions and descriptions of each knowledge area, including a clear indication of the depth of knowledge required in each area • offers a reliable, reputable and realistic range of reference sources in which these knowledge areas can be found and studied • shows how areas of knowledge relate to one another, and to their practical application in the Change Management Institute competence model
How was the CMBoK developed? • Joint CMI/APMG leadership: team of experienced authors identified, • Competence model analysed and themes identified – Tentative structure of knowledge proposed, reviewed, amended – Knowledge areas, knowledge components – Tracked against each other and against competence model – Research in all the knowledge areas we had identified – Key reference sources located and studied • First draft of CMBoK • First review process – wide by survey – deep by review panel • Revision, rewriting and second review process • Finalised and published October 2013

A developing resource • Plans are in hand to maintain the CMBoK • CMBoK2 is expected in late 2014 • Reviews every two years from 2016, with new editions as needed • Feedback and comments are welcomed – Details in the CMBoK – Survey on CMI website soon • The „Book of the BoK‟ is due for publication by Kogan Page in November 2014: “The Effective Change Manager‟s Handbook”
How can I use the CMBoK?
CM Professionals • As basis for self-evaluation • As structure for CPD • Provides source of guided reading in less familiar aspects • To access accreditation by CMI • To guide preparation for future APMG CM Examinations
Organizations needing CM expertise • Basis for recruitment of Change professionals • Structure for training/education of Change professionals • Basis for selecting Change Management consultants
Education and training providers • Independent benchmark for syllabus design • Guidance on range, balance and depth of coverage needed • Evidence-based link to employers‟ needs/expectations • Suggestions as to relevant reference sources and materials • Standard against which to examine knowledge and, for researchers and authors ... • International reference point for targeting articles and books • Structure for Change Management research
Case studies • Major Australian bank – one of their „big four‟ – bought 100 copies of the CMBoK and are using it as the basis of developing their internal Change Management community. It is also being used to structure the recruitment of new CM resources. • An independent (and very experienced) CM consultant commented that she now has a „very well-thumbed‟ copy of the CMBoK, having referred to it a great deal in beginning a major new assignment. • The same consultant added that the major UK financial governance institution in which she is working have borrowed her CMBoK often. They are basing their Change Management training on its structure and on the references it offers. It has also helped legitimize the importance of human change in a very project-focused culture.

2014 and beyond • Currently (March 2014) developing examinable material (new book) “The Effective Change Manager‟s Handbook” • Book to be available from 4th November (pre-order from end of May) • New suite of examinations to be developed for launch in early 2015 • New examinations will be fully aligned to CMI CMBoK • Advantages to candidates in achieving CMI accreditation NOTE: Good transition arrangements for those taking the current Change Management Foundation and Practitioner examinations mean that current course remains attractive through 2014!
