Intro to the CMMI (Capability Maturity Model Integration) :  Intro to the CMMI (Capability Maturity Model Integration) Management Overview Speaker:  Speaker John Ryskowski of JFR Consulting jfryskowski@yahoo.com 310 292 9288 Purpose:  Purpose To gain some understanding of: Process Models, their history, assumptions What’s in the CMMI and why Project management across maturity levels In summary Why Focus on Process? :  Why Focus on Process? The process management premise: The quality of a system is highly influenced by the quality of the process used to acquire, develop, and maintain it. This premise implies focus on processes as well as on product. This is a long-established practice in manufacturing. Belief in this premise is visible worldwide in quality movements in manufacturing and service industries, e.g., ISO standards. A Little History:  A Little History CMMI Parts :  CMMI Parts Maturity levels (or cultural state) Process Areas (PA) (or topics) Goals (or general activities) Practices (or detailed activities) The CMMI:  The CMMI Maturity Levels:  Maturity Levels The maturity level of an organization provides a way to predict the future performance of that organization within a discipline or set of disciplines. Quick quiz:  Quick quiz 1) What is the first level where data from one project is easily available to other projects in the organization? 2) At what level are individual projects managed with little detailed organizational influence? 3) At what level are boundaries applied to project metrics measures as an indicator to take action? 4) At what level is the transition to new technologies routine? 5) What level relies heavily on the heroics of individuals for project success? Level 1 (Initial) Level 2 (Repeatable) Level 3 (Defined) Level 4 (Managed) Level 5 (Optimizing) Level 2 Process Areas:  Level 2 Process Areas Requirements Management Configuration Management Process & Product Quality Assurance Measurement & Analysis Supplier Agreement Management Project Monitoring & Control Project Planning Level 3 Process Areas:  Level 3 Process Areas Organizational Process Focus Validation Product Integration Verification Decision Analysis & Resolution Risk Management Organizational Training Organizational Process Definition Integrated Project Management Technical Solution Requirements Development Levels 4 and 5 Process Areas:  Levels 4 and 5 Process Areas Causal Analysis & Resolution Organizational Innovation & Deployment Quantitative Project Management Organizational Process Performance Some Goals (from Project Planning):  Some Goals (from Project Planning) Goal 1 – Estimates of project planning parameters are established and maintained. Goal 2- A project plan is established and maintained as the basis for managing the project. Goal 3- Commitments to the project plan are established and maintained. Some Practices (from goal 2 of Project Planning):  Some Practices (from goal 2 of Project Planning) Establish the budget and schedule Identify project risks Plan for data management Plan for project resources Plan for needed knowledge and skills Plan stakeholder involvement Establish the project plan Process Areas may also be grouped by topic:  Process Areas may also be grouped by topic Project management Process management Engineering Support Let’s take a look at the project management process areas across the maturity levels. Project Management Process Areas :  Project Management Process Areas Supplier Agreement Management (SAM) Project Monitoring & Control (PMC) Project Planning (PP) Integrated Project Management (IPM) Risk Management (RSKM) Causal Analysis & Resolution (CAR) Quantitative Project Management (QPM) MATURITY LEVEL 2 MATURITY LEVEL 3 MATURITY LEVEL 4 MATURITY LEVEL 4 A model is an abstraction…:  A model is an abstraction… The CMMI captures industry/common sense best practices, and documents them at the appropriate level of abstraction so that there exist many ways to meet the model practices In Summary :  In Summary The CMMI brings Project visibility Project predictability For further study :  For further study Might want to start with these SEI web pages: www.sei.cmu.edu/cmmi/ For more about the CMMI www.sei.cmu.edu/sema/ For summaries of appraisal results In closing :  In closing Thank you
