Intramural Softball for the Busy McMaster Student By Victor Pek
My presentation is about the McMaster University intramural softball program. It is a great way to stay active, have fun, and meet people. Conveniently, you do not have to leave campus to do it all. I asked 20 McMaster students if they feel that they get enough exercise. Out of those 20, 7 felt that they get enough exercise, while 13 felt that they do not.
Staying active or trying to find time to play sports can become difficult to do for university students. Academic focus takes first priority, and there never seems to be enough time for anything. Fortunately there are options. Finding ways to stay active is simpler than one might think.
McMaster University offers an opportunity to take part in numerous sports and activities in their Intramural Athletics Calendar. I will be focusing specifically on softball in my presentation, as it is the first sport of the intramural season, and because I myself participate in the in the program. This will allow me to present first hand information and observations.
Softball is in many ways the ideal sport for a busy student. The season begins in mid-September, when students’ agendas aren’t too heavily clouded with assignments yet. This takes a lot of pressure off of time management during the season. The facilities are located on campus.
This is convenient for students in residence, as well as those inhabiting McMaster’s surrounding neighbourhoods. The games are strategically scheduled in the late afternoons and early evenings, or on weekends, so they rarely interfere with class.
Softball is also a sport that does not require much equipment either, so the students don’t have to worry about not having the required materials to participate. Bats, balls, and helmets are provided by the university. The rules of the game are also very straightforward and easy learn.
Intramural softball can also be a very social experience. All players that I have encountered so far have displayed good sportsmanship to their own and opposing team mates. Players do not necessarily have to be McMaster students either. As long as a person is registered at the athletic centre, they are eligible for play. This means that friends from the community, neighbours, and family can all play.
Softball is a great sport and should be considered by everyone looking at taking part in a sport or recreational activity. At this point I would like to answer any questions that you may have.

Thank you for your time, and I hope to see many of you on the diamond someday.
