Slide1:  Understanding the education backgrounds of international students and the impact on transition Facilitators:  Facilitators Sheryl Zorella Quality and Training Manager Chelsea Morley Regional Manager: Australia Completion of Workshop:  Completion of Workshop Please hand in the evaluation form to either Chelsea or Sheryl Lunch will be served at 1.15pm at the Monash University Club Workshop Objective::  Workshop Objective: To understand; The school system of 8 countries, the style of learning and the breadth and depth of the subject material How this impacts transition School Sector Market Data:  School Sector Market Data 24,717 students within Australia Top Countries: China Indonesia Korea Thailand Malaysia Singapore Hong Kong Taiwan Vietnam School Sector Data:  School Sector Data Top 3 States: NSW, VIC, QLD SA & QLD experienced growth Vic decline 3.9% from 2005 to 2006 Greatest decline WA 7.7% School Sector Trends:  School Sector Trends 90.4% studying in Secondary school 9.6% studying in Primary School 61.9% studying in Non-Government provider 38.1% studying in Government provider What will be covered:  What will be covered 8 countries School System Style of Learning Breadth and Depth of subject content China:  China Students complete Senior Middle 2 (Year 11 equivalent ) and Senior Middle 3 (Year 12 equivalent) Subjects include Politics, Chinese, English and Mathematics (all compulsory) and usually Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography, Computers and PE The system is high scoring and students often get high averages Entry to university is via university entrance exams and is very competitive Korea:  Korea Students complete Year 11 and Year 12 equivalent studies The high school program is extremely intensive A large number of subjects are studied including languages, science subjects, humanities, social science subjects, physical education subjects Many, many hours during and after school are spent preparing for university entrance exams and many students suffer from tremendous pressure at school Malaysia:  Malaysia Students complete SPM (Year 10 equivalent) and STPM (Year 12 equivalent) SPM is similar to O Levels About 7 subjects are studied including English and Bahasa Melayu STPM is taken over 1.5 – 2 years and is similar to A Levels 4 subjects are studied at STPM Level, one being a local language Many students exit at SPM level and continue to foundation or diploma programs at the numerous private colleges in Malaysia Hong Kong:  Hong Kong Students complete HKCEE (Hong Kong Certificate of Education Exam) – Year 10 equivalent English and Chinese are compulsory in HKCEE Many go on to complete Hong Kong A Levels A Levels – 2 years duration Students study 2-3 subjects Results are very low and there are high failure rates As a result the system of school education in Hong Kong is about to be radically overhauled Vietnam:  Vietnam Students complete senior secondary education and then sit for the Diploma of General Education (Bang Tu tai) A fairly broad range of subjects are studied with little opportunity for specialisation Marks are graded out of 10 with a pass being 5 International Schools:  International Schools These are becoming increasingly common in Asia and the Middle East Students complete different qualifications depending on which pathway the school has decided to follow The most common qualifications IB – International Baccalaureate GCE A Levels – through various boards/bodies American-style high school diploma and SAT’s AP’s – Advanced Placements through the College Board, USA Thailand:  Thailand Students complete Matayom 5 (Year 11 equivalent) and Matayom 6 (Year 12 equivalent) A broad range of subjects are studied covering languages, social studies, science studies and health and physical education and some practical subjects Grading is on the basis of a 4 point GPA scale Indonesia:  Indonesia Students complete SMUII (Year 11 equivalent) and SMUIII (Year 12 equivalent) Subjects vary depending on the stream chosen (natural science/social science/languages Across all streams students must study subjects such as religious education, citizenship, and Indonesian language and literature Marks are graded on a 10 point scale with a pass mark of 6 Transition Impact:  Transition Impact Learning Style Teaching Method Resources & Facilities Transition and how Monash assist:  Transition and how Monash assist University Commitment Monash Transition Program ‘Faculty’ Transition Packages International student support offices Thank You :  Thank You
