Intentional Behaviors: The Traveling Happiness Project

"For every minute you are angry you lose sixty seconds of happiness."
― Ralph Waldo Emerson

Happiness is a personal passion of mine. For quite some time, I have preached that happiness is a choice and that in order to be happy in life, we need to choose happiness...

So, I decided to do a little research on this belief of mine and checked out the movie "The Happy Movie". This movie talks about the research done on happiness. Magazine articles and books are being written on happiness, and even Harvard University is teaching classes on happiness because happiness can help you reach your others goals and be more successful in life.

What I learned in this movie is that we are born with a set amount of happiness which equals 50% of our happiness. So, 50% of our happiness comes from our genes and is a genetic set point. This means that we are born with a certain range of happiness that we fall into. When good or bad things happen to us, we return to our set point.

There is another 10% of happiness that comes from our social status, our job, what kind of car we drive, what kind of house we live in, how much money we have, and our health. It stunned me to learn that only 10% of our happiness comes from these things because these are the things in life that consume so much of our energy and attention.

So that leaves 40% of our happiness unaccounted for. Scientists believe that this comes from our activities and our intentions; our intentional behavior. Intentional behaviors our things that we can do on a regular basis to become happier.

It is these intentional behaviors which trigger our dopamine. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that is necessary for feelings of pleasure and happiness.
So what type of intentional activities trigger dopamine?

Well, aerobic activities for one. Things like running, hiking, riding bike, surfing, rock climbing. These all trigger dopamine which makes us feel happy.

Have you ever heard anyone talk about having a runners high? This is because runners trigger dopamine while they run.

It's also important in order to be happy that we don't adapt and that we vary what we do. We need to vary our intentional activities in life. This can be as simple as taking a different route when you go on your morning run or bike ride. For some people it's a little change and others need a lot of change but it's all about adding variety and adding change; adding to the spice of life.

Just a few months ago, I quit my job so I could travel the world. I found a way to earn a residual income online through affiliate marketing, and now I am able to travel. Through travel, I am constantly changing my routine and I am varying what I do on a daily basis.
