INST776 Midterm Project Presentation Geographic Volunteering Work (GVW) System by investigating local information seeking and sharing behavior Suhas Mahajan University of Maryland, College Park
Contents Introduction Research Problem Related Work User Research Analysis Design Evaluation Progress & Plan
Introduction Core research area: CSCW Specialized research area: GVW Everyday Life Information Seeking Special challenges for new immigrants Local information needs Importance of local information
Research Questions What are the local information needs and local information behavior of new immigrants adjusting themselves to a new environment? How can a GVW system be designed to support new immigrants’ local information seeking and sharing activities?
Related Work User generated content on open online maps User motivation for contribution Local information seeking behavior Importance of human sources Existing systems
Research Design Interviewing Pre-questionnaire, Semi-structured interviews Data analysis Quantitative and Qualitative analysis Design of prototype Sticky notes, Paper Prototyping Development of prototype Twitter Bootstrap, Google Maps API Evaluation of prototype Task-based usability tests, Iteration
Data Analysis Importance Ratings for Local Information Types
Data Analysis Frequency Ratings for Local Information Sources
Data Analysis Major Information Sources for Local Information Types
User Statements P4: “When I first arrived to US, my highest priority was getting a good accommodation. I searched a lot for Chinese renters in College Park. If the renter is Chinese, it would be easier for me to get a Chinese roommate. And if my roommate is Chinese, we can cook Chinese food together!” P7: “Whenever I need any information, I ask my friends. If they can’t help, I try to find it on Google”. P9: “My dream map system would just show me everything around me that I need”.
User Statements P3: “I’m a pure vegetarian. I always consulted with my friend about vegetarian food. He taught me how to tell the restaurant servers to prepare the food, like what to put and what not”. P3: “During my initial days in US, I didn’t watch many movies. I didn’t attend any entertainment events. I was most concerned about exploring this area, transportation, and food options”. P1: “If the question is specific to me, I would be happy to answer that. But if it’s generic, I think anyone can answer that”.
User Statements P8: “I’m afraid if I share the information publicly on Facebook, people will irritate me with more questions”. P5: “Once we went to an Indian restaurant but didn’t know that they have a buffet until we finished. Their website didn’t show this information either. Later my friends told me about it”. P8: “I went to Shoppers and got some vegetables. At the time of checkout, I wasn’t sure about the English names of some vegetables. I had to call the attendant”.
