March 12, 2014 Inquiry Based Science Education Presenters: Sandra Eix, Science Learning Lead, Science World Favian Yee, Secondary Science Teacher, Delta School District Patti Leigh, Executive Director, Science Fair Foundation of B.C Resources for IBSE: Smarter Science is a framework for teaching and learning science in grades 1–12 and for developing the skills of inquiry, creativity, and innovation in a meaningful and engaging manner. Look under “resources” for “Inquiry Cards” and “Sparks” to find ideas to kick off inquiry. Materials are available in French and English. Science World’s Resources website has hundreds of activities, curriculum linked to K-7 science. Click on “activities by type” and choose “Exploration” to find the most inquiry-based options. A joint effort of the BCScTA and Science World, Catalyst for Science offers teacher-developed and teacher- reviewed lessons, activities, and links. Most (but not all) are at the high school level. La Main a la Pate is a French program that promotes and supports IBSE in France and around the world. Use “Langue” to select English, or visit the mirror site at You’ll find information about the general practice of IBSE as well as fully-developed units of study. There’s even more if you read French! The National Academies Press publishes a series of books summarizing research and best practice in learning, particularly learning science. How People Learn, Learning Science in Informal Environments, Surrounded by Science, Taking Science to School and Ready Set Science are all available as free pdf downloads. The research these books describe is the basis for both the La Main a la Pate and Smarter Science approaches. The Science Fair Foundation of British Columbia offers resources specific to science fairs at every level. The BC Science Teachers Association runs conferences and smaller pro-D sessions, and supports classroom teachers with advice, mentorship, and resources.
