PUNITHAVATHI INBANATHAN PRINCIPAL THANTHAI ROEVER COLLEGE OF NURSING, PERAMBALUR UNDERSTANDING VALUES: UNDERSTANDING VALUES Values are set of beliefs and ideas affecting the way people making decisions and conduct themselves. A value is a belief, a mission, or a philosophy that is meaningful. Whether we are consciously aware of them or not, every individual has a core set of personal values. The unique arrangement of values or priorities for each individual is known as a value system and it transcends speific situations and guides one’s judgments, thoughts and actions PHILOSOPHICAL PERSPECTIVE : PHILOSOPHICAL PERSPECTIVE developing strong values is the foundation of lifelong happiness and fulfillment. Values help you define who you are and the kind of life you want to lead . Values are not measurable and the presence of value do not guarantee the better life ; rather it offers personal satisfaction BECAUSE VALUES ARE RATHER VAGUE, EMOTIONALLY BINDING, AND NOT AT ALL SCIENTIFIC, THEY CAN BE EXCEEDINGLY DIFFICULT TO COMPREHENSIVELY DEFINE VALUES: VALUES ARE THE PERSONAL TOOLS THROUGH WHICH A VISION IS CREATED, FOLLOWED AND ENFORCED GOVERN OUR ATTITUDES UNDERPIN EVERYTHING ARE THE GUIDELINES OF BEHAVIOUR ARE WHAT DEFINE OUR MORALS STANDARDS AND PRINCIPLES TYPES OF VALUES: TYPES OF VALUES CORE VALUES VALUES WHICH REMAIN RELATIVELY STABLE. THEY ARE A PART OF HUMAN BEING’S BASIC VALUES SYSTEM THAT ARE ASSIMILATED DEEP INSIDE HIM/HER DURING EARLY SOCIALIZATION. PERIPHERAL VALUES VALUES WHICH CHANGE MUCH FASTER OVER THE COURSE OF TIME. PERIPHERAL VALUES ARE NOT PRIMARY BASIC VALUES AND ARE THERFORE AFFECTED BY SURROUNDING PRESSURES OR SOCIETAL TRENDS . Individuals prefer working in those organizations which have a similar value system as their own individual value system. ASPIRATIONAL VALUES a few values we wish that everyone of us develops over time. We aspire to adopt them and do our best to manage them into our organization. But they are neither natural nor inherent. WHERE DO WE GET VALUES: WHERE DO WE GET VALUES HOME SCOOL AND COLLEGE FRIENDS AND RELATIVES SOCIETY MEDIA SPIRITUAL ORGANIZATIONS HISTORY BOOKS VARIOUS INFORMAL INSTITUTION VALUE BASED LEADERSHIP As the values in the society are eroding very fast, the society needs value based leaders who can lead society in a right direction. SHARED HUMAN VALUES AND GLOBAL MORALITY: SHARED HUMAN VALUES AND GLOBAL MORALITY Social life helps shape human values which leads a path towards a harmonious global society are Patience Truthfulness Respect for life Granting dignity to all Kindliness and generosity Non-violence Compassion and forgiveness Socially disruptive actions and attitudes that threaten the survival of the society include Greed Dishonesty Cowardice Anger, envy, promiscuity Stubbornness and disobedience Violence Intolerance Slide11: Value and celebrate Yourself your profession your team your service Your fellow member Your education Your leader Your accomplishment Your achievement Your passion Your tradition Your food Your lifestyle Professional Climate NURSING : Professional Climate NURSING Inherent in the nursing profession – and particularly in the current climate – is the concept of chaos; an environment of constant and unprecedented change, through which nurse leaders are required to guide the profession in order to continue its advancement (Grossman & Valiga , 2012) Leaders guide and facilitate others to make a positive difference in their own lives and to contribute a larger good Nurse leaders are necessary to establish direction, align people, motivate and inspire colleagues towards a common goal VALUE BASED LEADER: VALUE BASED LEADER By incorporating values or implementing those values through organization’s vision, successful leaders take risk of exposing their personal beliefs, shredding all borders of privacy and completely opening up to their followers Truly successful leaders do not require a filter because they believe in their core values, whatsoever the values may be. Value based leadership frees one of the notions that leadership is positional hierarchical or managerial and allows for leadership to be more pervasive in organizations and in life because leadership is not tied to structure, qualities or birth. From Values to Action centers: From Values to Action centers self-reflection : You must have the ability to identify and reflect on what you stand for, what your values are, and what matters most to you. Balance: Balance second principle is balance, which means the ability to see situations from multiple perspectives and differing viewpoints to gain a much fuller understanding. Balance means that you consider all sides and opinions with an open mind. True self confidence: True self confidence third principle is true self-confidence, accepting yourself as you are. You recognize your strengths and your weaknesses and strive for continuous improvement Genuine humility: Genuine humility Genuine humility keeps life in perspective, particularly as you experience success in your career. In addition, it helps you value each person you encounter and treat everyone respectfully . WHAT EFFECTIVE LEADERS NEED TO BE, KNOW AND DO: WHAT EFFECTIVE LEADERS NEED TO BE, KNOW AND DO 1. SET DIRECTIONS face reality; focus on the future; see changes as an opportunity 2. Demonstrate personal character live values, lead by example, have and create a positive self image, display integrity and learning ability 3. Build organizational capacity build infrastructure build teams leverage diversity, make change happen, design human resource systems 4.Mobilize individual commitment rect emotions, manage attention, share power and authority, build collaborative relationships FROM AN ORGANIZATIONAL PERSPECTIVE: FROM AN ORGANIZATIONAL PERSPECTIVE Values can be created as culture and identity defining the organization Fortifying personal values within the organization through the inherent transparency along with the transformational approach can bring the vision into alignment with the organization resulting in socially preferable existence Aligned values stimulate and transform the followers by acting on their higher order needs such as SOCIAL INCLUSION AND SELF ACTUALIZATION Contd--: Contd -- Leadership is, in fact, necessarily and completely natural because human beings are involved, and all human beings are more than just industrial cogs; they all have values. Leaders are just as human as followers leadership is even more than values, it is a holistically transformative, mutual relationship. Leadership is the relationship produced by the influencing of a follower’s inherent order of values, the application of those values to a specific vision, and the process of carrying out that vision through constant inspiration VALUE BACKFIRE: VALUE BACKFIRE Individuals and leaders must be aware of the potential backfire involved in the implementation of personal values
