India is now Third Largest Global Smartphone Market

According to a new report by Strategy firm, India overtook Japan to become the world’s third largest smartphone market for the first time ever during Q1 2013. In India, companies like Samsung, Micromax and Apple are driving higher volumes through improved distribution networks. The smartphone boom is well underway. Strategy Analytics said India is growing four times faster than the global average, with 163% year on year growth across India in Q1, compared to worldwide smartphone volumes expanding 39%. According to its data, India’s market is rising quicker than China (86% YoY), Japan (24% YoY), the US (19% YoY) — and “almost all other major countries”.

What  is  the  reason  behind  this  ? As   TechCrunch   notes,   GIven   given   its   huge   popula7on,   including   a   growing,   wealthier   middle   class,   and   rising   interest   in   owning   consumer   electronics,   the   rise   of   India   as   a   smartphone  powerhouse  is  not  surprising.  Moreover,  major  global  players  like  Apple  and   Samsung   are   pushing   their   phones   through   beCer   distribu7on   networks,   according   to   Strategy  Analy7cs'  Handset  Country  Share  Tracker.  But  local  vendors  are  actually  the  major   beneficiaries  of  the  jump  in  smartphone  adop7on. Indian  companies  Micromax,  Karbonn,  and  Spice  are  enjoying  annual  growth  in  smartphone   sales  between  200  and  500  percent.  So-‐called  "microvendors"  such  as  Lemon  Mobile  have   seen   sales  skyrocket   by   more   than   1,000  percent.   Such   vendors  mostly   deal   in   Android   phones,  the  report  added.

How  is  Apple  performing  in  India  ? Another  report   by  analyst  IDC  suggested   that  the  mature   Western  European  smartphone   market  shrank  more  than  expected  in  Q1,  with  total  shipments  dropping  4.2%  year  on  year   to   43.6   million   units.   This   European   slowdown   is   having   the   biggest   impact   on   Apple’s   marketshare,  with  IDC  no7ng  that  iOS  con7nues  to  lose  ground  in  the  region,  declining  to   20%  in  Q1,  down  from  25%  in  the  year  ago  quarter. Although  it’s  losing  share   in   Europe,   Apple   has  been  gaining  in   India.   Back   in   March   IDC   noted   Cuper7no  had   jumped  to  second   place   for   revenue   share   in   India,   taking  a   15.6%   share  in  Q4  last  year,  aer  ge]ng  smaller  local  retailers  distribu7ng  its  iPhones.  Apple  has   also  been  offering  amor7zed  payment  plans  to  help  spread  the  upfront  cost  of  buying  its   devices   —   to   widen   access   to   what   remain   premium   priced   products   vs   the   Android-‐ powered  compe77on.

What  does  this  mean  for  Developers? According  to  Neil  Mawston,  execu7ve  director,  Strategy  Analy7cs: “India   is   the   new   China.   India   is   a   low-‐penetra4on,   high-‐ growth  market  that  no  smartphone  vendor,  component  maker   or  apps  developer  can  afford  to  ignore.”
