Description

The impact of suffrage in New Zealand.

Did disaster strike after women won the vote as predicted?

Women would argue with their husbands… women would start to become like men… liquor would not longer be sold… men would start wearing dresses…. ????????

Surprise, surprise none of these catastrophes happened. Life carried on pretty much as normal. Women, as predicted, voted the same way as their husbands. However, this gigantic win for Kate Sheppard and her fellow campaigners was but a small step for women in New Zealand and around the world in the fight for equality.

Women were simply able to have a say in the issues that affected them…

Some of the NCW’s aims took many years to be realised: The Criminal Code Amendment Act 1896 was raised the age of consent from 14 to 16 Women were enabled to practice law from 1896 The Divorce Act 1898 made conditions of divorce equal for men and women Women could not stand for parliament until 1919 The Contagious Diseases Act was not repealed until 1910 Equal pay was enshrined in law in 1972 It was not until 1933 that a women was elected to parliament
