Development of Resource-based Learning Organisers to enhance Training on Simulators Kalyan Chatterjea Singapore Maritime Academy Takeshi Nakazawa World Maritime University

Introduction Simulation-based training is being increasingly used at the Singapore Maritime Academy (SMA) to increase the percentage of skill-components in the maritime curricula. At SMA we are trying to create a digital supporting environment, which could scaffold learners and thereby allow for flexible & easy-paced learning to suite the needs of individual learners.

Resource-based Learning Organisers [RALOs] We have created Resource-based Advanced Learning Organizers (RALOs: Ausubel,1960) to facilitate personalised learning in Engine Room Simulator Training. Learning on a Steam Propulsion Simulator from MPRI Ship Analytic is used for this study. The system developed is now being tried out for the Steam COC Course for LNG Propulsion.

RALOs – A Hyper-Semantic Map Approach To provide support in a large domain of knowledge for learners a semantic map approach is suggested by Kayama et al. (2001). Taking a similar approach, we are trying to develop a framework of semantic maps, with embedded resources to support learners in developing skills on a Steam Propulsion Simulator.

Resource-based Learning Organisers [RALOs]

RALO Development – Task of LNG Tanker Activation… Dry Dock to Full-Away! The task is spilt into 20 sub-tasks [20 simulator exercises – 20 nodes]. A RALO has the purpose of visualizing the overall sequential tasks at-hand and also providing interface for accessing resources via this visual organiser. Each node becomes a Learning Object and at the moment we are populating these nodes with learning quizzes.
