Social Media 101 Sharing your volunteerism, and promoting projects to grow your network and incase awareness for New York Cares. Social Media for Volunteers 101

Agenda: • Facebook overview • Twitter overview • Blog overview • Question and Answer Social Media for Volunteers 101

How Can I Share My Volunteer Experiences On My Social Networks? • Social Media is a great way to tell a lot of people what you’re up to. • You can help our organization reach more people with your posts, and expand your own network by sharing your volunteer work. Social Media for Volunteers 101

How can I interact with the New York Cares Facebook page? • Our Facebook page hopes to inform the community about volunteering opportunities, events, and stories to get people excited about our projects. • We want it to be a place where volunteers can have a conversation about projects, stories, and what they love about volunteering. Social Media for Volunteers 101

How can I interact with the New York Cares Facebook page? • When you see a post on our page, you should like, share, or comment on it. • When you do this, the activity will show up on the newsfeed so your friends can all see it. Social Media for Volunteers 101

Then can then click to expand on the activity to learn more. Social Media for Volunteers 101

How can I interact with the New York Cares Facebook page? • By interacting with our posts, your friends will see you’re involved with New York Cares, and will learn more about our work. • Maybe you’ll be able to convince a buddy to volunteer with you! Social Media for Volunteers 101

Great! But how can I share stuff with the New York Cares community? • If you have something you want to share on our page, there are a couple ways to do it. Social Media for Volunteers 101

Great! But how can I share stuff with the New York Cares community? • Facebook isn’t great at showing pictures posted on the wall of a page. • Posts added to our page just show up in a small box on the right. Social Media for Volunteers 101

Great! But how can I share stuff with the New York Cares community? • To make sure as many people see your post as possible, tag our organization in a post on your own timeline. • This way, all your friends will see it, and it will still be listed on the New York Cares page. How will this expand my network? • By sharing the work you’re doing with our page and your networks, you can meet other volunteers who work on similar projects. You can get to know our Community Partners, our staff, and other like-minded people in different industries you may be interested in working in. Social Media for Volunteers 101

How can I interact with the New York Cares Twitter page? • The New York Cares Twitter page is a place where volunteers and New Yorkers can find out about volunteer opportunities, upcoming events, breaking news relevant to our cause, and relevant NYC events. Social Media for Volunteers 101

How can I interact with the New York Cares Twitter page? • We want people to have a conversation with us on Twitter, and let us know how they’re involved with our organization. Social Media for Volunteers 101

How can I interact with the New York Cares Twitter page? • You can do this by following us, Retweeting our content, checking in at our office or the location of the project you’re attending, and posting pictures of what you’re doing on your project. Social Media for Volunteers 101

What makes this a good example of how to share project updates with us and your followers? Social Media for Volunteers 101

In this case, only people following both Wes and Friends of Gantry will see Gantry’s response. Social Media for Volunteers 101

What else should I include in my Tweets? • Including hashtags will help your Tweet be seen by more people. • Including the handle of the Community Partner means they’ll see it, and possibly share it with their networks. • If you have a good picture, post it! Everyone loves pictures. Social Media for Volunteers 101

Useful #Hashtags • #Volunteer • #Nonprofit • #GivingBack Social Media for Volunteers 101

This is a great example of how to include our handle, as well as our partner’s handle. Social Media for Volunteers 101

How can this expand my network? • The more frequently you post, the more followers you’ll get. • By engaging in conversations with people with similar interests, you can learn about more opportunities, events, and make new connections. Social Media for Volunteers 101

How can I interact with the New York Cares blog? • Our blog is where we share volunteer stories, how we’re helping clients, and discuss news and studies relevant to our work. • It’s meant to show the impact of our work, and why people volunteer with us. Social Media for Volunteers 101

How can I interact with the New York Cares blog? • As our blog is set up now, it’s not very interactive. You can comment on the stories and share them on your networks. (Which you should do!) Social Media for Volunteers 101

How can I interact with the New York Cares blog? • The best way to interact with our blog, is by writing your own posts for us. Volunteer stories always get a ton of hits and shares. • Submit a blog post to us about a particular project you went on, or how you started volunteering by emailing me. Social Media for Volunteers 101

How can I interact with the New York Cares blog? • If you’re interested in honing your writing skills, this is a great way to build up your portfolio about something you’re passionate about it. Social Media for Volunteers 101

A few things to remember • When taking pictures, be sensitive to your audience. It may be a good idea to check with your Team Leader beforehand to make sure the agency is comfortable with volunteers taking pictures. Social Media for Volunteers 101

A few things to remember • Social Media is addicting – don’t get too caught up in it while volunteering. Social Media for Volunteers 101
