How to Survive the GED:  How to Survive the GED Feather River College Presents A workshop for Test-Takers Presented by Beth Reid, LRC, breid@frc.edu General Educational Development 5 Subject Areas:  General Educational Development 5 Subject Areas Language Arts – Reading Language Arts – Writing Science Social Studies Math Questions per Subject Area:  Questions per Subject Area Language Arts – Reading 40 questions Language Arts – Writing I 50 Language Arts – Writing II (essay) 200 words Science 50 Social Studies 50 Math 50 Language Arts – Reading :  Language Arts – Reading Selections from popular and classical literature followed by comprehension questions requiring skills like making inferences and drawing conclusions Language Arts – Writing :  Language Arts – Writing The writing section is divided in ½: Part I – Covers grammar, spelling and punctuation. Part II – The essay component where topics are supplied by topic cards. Slide6:  Essay score The criteria includes: Response to the prompt Organization Development andamp; Details Conventions of EAE Word Choice Inadequate Marginal Adequate Effective The essay is scored on a 4 point scale: Slide7:  Writing off the topic 'Listing' In the essay avoid : Language Arts:  Language Arts The Writing section is based on a combination of the multiple-choice score and the essay score Essays are scored by 2 trained readers with a chief reader to dispel discrepancies. Science:  Science Life Science Biology Elementary Physics Basic Chemistry Social Studies:  Social Studies History Geography Political Science Charts Graphs Math:  Math Arithmetic Algebra Geometry Graphs Charts Tables Diagrams Math:  Math The math section includes questions supporting calculator use. The 2-sided, single-page answer sheet includes 3 different formats: Multiple-Choice Grid Standard grid Coordinate plane grid How to best prepare:  How to best prepare Statistics show that GED candidates who utilize the official practice tests succeed at a higher rate than any other form of preparation. February March April June July September October November Slide16:  Registration Process Students register in person at least two days prior to taking the GED. In order to register, students need to present a photo I.D. During registration, students need to pay. Initial testing costs $60.00 with no cost for re-takes. Slide17:  No one will be admitted to the testing session without prior registration and…  Bring a photo I.D. with you to the testing session. Remember… Slide18:  Get plenty of rest the night before the test. Eat a good breakfast with a little protein (eggs),but not too much grease (which slows down the metabolism). Drink a glass of O.J. Arrive early. Breath deeply and try to enjoy! If you prepare before, you should be ready. Prepare Slide19:  Good Luck!
