“Hello… is it me you have been looking for?” Disclaimer: This document does not contain dating advice on how to snag that good looking uni student you have your eyes on! So you’ve started studying a new class and you have met someone you think is pretty cool and you seem to have a lot in common. After saying “see you later” you find yourself hoping that you will be able to sit beside them in class next week, or even better, start a great friendship. But how will you maintain this initial interest? Make the effort Set a time and choose a regular spot to meet – it is like dating in the sense that you don’t want to stand them up. Share knowledge Let them know about a workshop on library databases, where to find great resources and bounce ideas off each other (note: do not share assignments). Show interest Make sure the conversation is balanced and you show interest in your new companion’s hobbies and passions. How to Invite them to something There are lots of fun social and study related activities you can invite them to. Try to choose something you will both enjoy. maintain relationships Sit next to them in class or give them a nod as you arrive There’s nothing worse than pretending they are not there. Make sure to give them a nod or better yet, take a seat! after O-Week Build some camaraderie Ask them how their weekend was, quote lines from a TV show you both enjoy, compliment their new shoes or sweet taste in music. Keep it light and fun! Maintain contact Work with them on a group assignment if you can Regular study sessions make learning fun and can spark conversations about similar interests. If you undertake any of the above tips you will have an excellent chance of keeping and building your new friendships. Sharing university experiences and success stories with the people who are right there with you, will make your time at Uni so much more exciting! Share your experience with us #usqstudy CRICOS: QLD00244B  NSW02225M  TEQSA: PRV12081 Send a follow up text or email and instigate regular contact so you don’t lose touch.
