How To HANDLE : How To HANDLE June 29, 2008 HOW DO YOU KNOW WHEN YOU HAVE COME TO A DEAD-END IN YOUR LIFE? : HOW DO YOU KNOW WHEN YOU HAVE COME TO A DEAD-END IN YOUR LIFE? You know it when things look hopeless. When you realize that God is going to have to perform a miracle for things to come out right! What do you do when you come to a dead-end? We are going to learn from a positive Biblical example, we’re going do what Abraham did what he faced a dead-end. Abraham left Ur in present-day Iraq, when he was 75 years old. At age 75 God called him to leave everything he knew, everything he was familiar with, everything he was comfortable with and go to a place that God would show him. God promised Abraham a son through whom many nations would come. Yet at 99 years of age no heir had yet been born. At 99 it would seem that he was at a dead end. How do you handle dead-ends? 2 "No to DEAD Ends" HOW DO YOU HANDLE DEAD-ENDS? : HOW DO YOU HANDLE DEAD-ENDS? Which one of these images suits you? Defines your life history! Well we can’t do anything about the past but today is the day of salvation – the day the LORD has made just for us so let’s FINISH the job at hand! Satan may be painting a picture of a dead end but… 3 "No to DEAD Ends" 4 (R’s) WaysTo Handle DEAD ENDS : 4 (R’s) WaysTo Handle DEAD ENDS #1 Remember What God Can Do #2 Recall What God Has Said #3Resist The Facts With Faith #4 Reckon On God To Act 4 "No to DEAD Ends" Romans 4:16-21 : Romans 4:16-21 16 Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all, 5 "No to DEAD Ends" Romans 4:16-21 : Romans 4:16-21 17 (As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were. 6 "No to DEAD Ends" Romans 4:16-21 : Romans 4:16-21 18 Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations, according to that WHICH WAS SPOKEN, So shall thy seed be. 19 And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about a hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sarah's womb: 7 "No to DEAD Ends" Romans 4:16-21 : Romans 4:16-21 20 He staggered (to separate thoroughly, to withdraw from) not at the promise of God through unbelief (faithlessness); but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; 21 And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform. 8 "No to DEAD Ends" HOW DID ABRAHAM HANDLE DEAD-ENDS? : HOW DID ABRAHAM HANDLE DEAD-ENDS? #1 Remember What God Can Do  Don’t dwell on what you cannot do. Dwell on what God can do! Don’t dwell on the situation. Don’t fixate on the impossibility! Don’t look at what you can’t solve. 9 "No to DEAD Ends" #1 Remember What God Can Do : #1 Remember What God Can Do 17 (AS IT IS WRITTEN, I HAVE MADE THEE A FATHER OF MANY NATIONS,) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were. 10 "No to DEAD Ends" #1 Remember What God Can Do : #1 Remember What God Can Do Instead of panicking focus on God. Notice that Abraham believed God! Faith is not just a positive mental attitude. It is not hoping or wishing. Did you notice that our text speaks of two things only God can do - God making alive dead ones and calling things not being, being. 11 "No to DEAD Ends" #1 Remember What God Can Do : #1 Remember What God Can Do Only God… • Gives life to the dead • Calls into being things that do not exist Luke 18:27 And JESUS said, the things which are impossible with men ARE POSSIBLE WITH GOD. 12 "No to DEAD Ends" #2 Recall What God Has Said : #2 Recall What God Has Said 18 Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations, according to that which was SPOKEN, so shall thy seed be. 13 "No to DEAD Ends" #2 Recall What God Has Said : #2 Recall What God Has Said “Who, contrary to hope, in hope believed, so that he became the father of many nations, according to what was spoken, So shall your descendants be." When hope was dead, Abraham believed in hope. 99 years of age and no heir, yet Abraham still believed. If Abraham had only believed in what his  senses conveyed to him – what he could see, feel, touch, smell – all hope would have been gone. Instead, he trusted what God had said. 14 "No to DEAD Ends" FOCUS ON WHAT GOD HAS PROMISED! : FOCUS ON WHAT GOD HAS PROMISED! Hebrews 11:17-18 By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son, 18 Of whom it was said, That in Isaac shall thy seed be called: 15 "No to DEAD Ends" FOCUS ON WHAT GOD HAS PROMISED! : FOCUS ON WHAT GOD HAS PROMISED! In Hebrews 11 we read that when Abraham was told to offer Isaac as a sacrifice he did not panic. When facing this seemingly dead-end situation he believed the promises of God (Hebrews 11:17-19). Abraham didn’t panic because he realized that God would keep His promise even if it meant raising Isaac from the dead. Remember what Abraham told his servants when he and Isaac began climbing the mountain. "I and the lad   will go yonder and worship, and  come again to you," (Genesis 22:5). Sometimes when we hit dead-ends we begin to panic. But that is the time God says “Trust Me, believe My word.” PROMISES ARE ONLY AS GOOD AS THE ONE MAKING THE PROMISE, AND IF GOD IS MAKING A PROMISE YOU CAN BE SURE HE WILL KEEP IT! 16 "No to DEAD Ends" FOCUS ON WHAT GOD HAS PROMISED! : FOCUS ON WHAT GOD HAS PROMISED! Hebrews 11:19 Accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure. Genesis 22:5 And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you. 17 "No to DEAD Ends" FOCUS ON WHAT GOD HAS PROMISED! : FOCUS ON WHAT GOD HAS PROMISED! Find a promise in God’s Word and hold on to it. You won’t have any trouble finding one. There are over 7000 promises in the Word of God. GOD HAS PLACED THEM THERE FOR OUR BENEFIT. 18 "No to DEAD Ends" #3Resist The Facts With Faith : #3Resist The Facts With Faith Romans 4:19 AND BEING NOT WEAK IN FAITH, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about a hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sarah's womb: 19 "No to DEAD Ends" #3Resist The Facts With Faith : #3Resist The Facts With Faith Faith does not pretend there is no problem. Faith confronts and  challenges the facts with faith. In spite of the facts, Abraham “…staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strong in faith, giving glory to God.” FAITH DOES NOT DENY DIFFICULTY. THE DENIAL OF DIFFICULTY IS FANTASY. 20 "No to DEAD Ends" #3 Resist The Facts With Faith : #3 Resist The Facts With Faith 21 "No to DEAD Ends" #3 Resist The Facts With Faith : #3 Resist The Facts With Faith Abraham never denied his circumstances, but he did defy them. Faith is not convincing yourself that things don't exist when they do or that things do exist when they don't. The Bible never calls on us to ignore reality. Rather, it calls on us to put our faith in the Lord of reality. In other words, faith doesn't declare the circumstances and natural barriers to be non-existent. Faith simply declares that God is not shackled by them as we are. Faith is facing the difficulty but realizing that our God is greater than any difficulty that can ever be thrown at us. In this case Abraham was to old to have a child. Yet Abraham believed God in spite of the circumstances. Faith means you face the facts and aren’t discouraged by them but that you believe in the God who is bigger than the facts. The key to keep from getting discouraged is to look beyond the circumstances you are facing.   Don’t look inward you’ll be disgusted.   Don’t look at others you’ll be disappointed.   Don’t look backward you’ll be defeated.   Don’t look at circumstances you’ll be disheartened.   Don’t look at blessings you’ll be diverted.   Look at Jesus, you’ll be delighted. SO MUCH DEPENDS ON OUR FOCUS! 22 "No to DEAD Ends" #4 Reckon On God To Act : #4 Reckon On God To Act Romans 4:20-21 says 20 He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; 21 And being fully persuaded that, WHAT HE HAD PROMISED, HE WAS ABLE ALSO TO PERFORM. 23 "No to DEAD Ends" #4 Reckon On God To Act : #4 Reckon On God To Act In spite of the facts, Abraham did not waver at the promise of God. He rested wholly upon God's performance of what He had promised.  As far as Abraham was concerned there was only one impossibility, and that was for God to lie.  ABRAHAM EXPECTED GOD TO ACT! 24 "No to DEAD Ends" EXPECTANCE : EXPECTANCE He did not know how God would come through! He just expected God to come through. The only type of faith that will work when you have a dead end situation is a personal faith.     Dead ends will come, how will you handle them? 25 "No to DEAD Ends" Slide 26: 26 "No to DEAD Ends" Pete Rose : Pete Rose Pete Rose, the famous baseball player, and I have never met, but he taught me something so valuable that it changed my life. Pete was being interviewed in spring training the year he was about to break Ty Cobb’s all time hits record. One reporter blurted out, “Pete, you only need 78 hits to break the record. How many at-bats do you think you’ll need to get the 78 hits?” Without hesitation, Pete just stared at the reporter and very matter-of- factly said, “78.” The reporter yelled back, “Ah, come on Pete, you don’t expect to get 78 hits in 78 at-bats do you?” Mr. Rose calmly shared his philosophy with the throngs of reporters who were anxiously awaiting his reply to this seemingly boastful claim. “Every time I step up to the plate, I expect to get a hit! If I don’t expect to get a hit, I have no right to step in the batter’s box in the first place!” “If I go up hoping to get a hit,” he continued, “then I probably don’t have a prayer to get a hit. It is a positive expectation that has gotten me all of the hits in the first place.” When I thought about Pete Rose’s philosophy and how it applied to everyday life, I felt a little embarrassed. As a business person, I was hoping to make my sales quotas. As a father, I was hoping to be a good dad. As a married man, I was hoping to be a good husband. The truth was that I was an adequate salesperson, I was a not so bad father, and I was an okay husband. I immediately decided that being okay was not enough! I wanted to be a great salesperson, a great father and a great husband. I changed my attitude to one of positive expectation, and the results were amazing. I was fortunate enough to win a few sales trips, I won Coach of the Year in my son’s baseball league and I share a loving relationship with my wife, Karen, with whom I expect to be married to for the rest of my life! Thanks, Mr. Rose! 27 "No to DEAD Ends" Just Say NO to: : Just Say NO to: 28 "No to DEAD Ends"
