HOW TO ADD TABLE OF CONTENTS & ENDNOTES TO AN EBOOK

Both of these require two things: Bookmarks Hyperlinks

Bookmarks ● A bookmark is a place-holder ● It marks a place in a document For Table of Contents you need to bookmark: ● The chapter headings ● The top of the Table of Contents For endnotes you need to bookmark: ● The location for each endnote ● Each endnote at the end of the document

Hyperlinks ● A hyperlink points to a location ● It is used on the internet to link to a web site ● It can also be used to point within a document – to a bookmark

How to create a Bookmark ● Position the cursor |Chapter 1 |[1] |1. note ● Select [Insert Bookmark] ● Name the Bookmark (no spaces, keep it simple) ch1 ep1 end1 ● eBook converters will try to create a Table of Contents for you. To ensure they use your version, label the bookmark at the top of the Table of Contents ref_TOC

How to create a Hyperlink Table of Contents ● Highlight the text for the link Chapter 1 ● Select [Insert Hyperlink] ● In the dialogue box, click the button by [Target in document] ● Select [Bookmarks] and choose ch1 ● [Apply] & [Close] ● The highlighted text will go blue and underlined ● You can check it has worked by clicking on the hyperlink – it should reposition the cursor at the bookmark position

Table of Contents (1) Each chapter in the contents list should be hyperlinked to the bookmark for that chapter Table of Contents Chapter 1 Chapter 1 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Chapter 2 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Chapter 3 Chapter 2 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Chapter 3 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Table of Contents (2) To enable the reader to find the Table of Contents easily, bookmark it and then hyperlink each chapter heading back to the Table of Contents Table of Contents Chapter 1 Chapter 1 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Chapter 2 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Chapter 3 Chapter 2 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Chapter 3 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Endnotes (1) Endnotes consist of a sequential number in the text which refers to a numbered note at the end of the document Each number should be hyperlinked to the relevant note ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~[1]~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~[2]~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~[3]~~~~~~~~~ 1. Note contents for item 1 2. Note contents for item 2 3. Note contents for item 3

Endnotes (2) In order for the reader to get back to where they were reading, once they have read the endnote, each note should be hyperlinked back to the relevant number, or next word in the document ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~[1]~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~[2]~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~[3]~~~~~~~~~ 1. Note contents for item 1 2. Note contents for item 2 3. Note contents for item 3

Endnotes (3) If you are producing a non-fiction book, being able to have fully-functioning endnotes will give your book a really professional look
