The style of leadership a founder chooses sets the tone for an entire company. According to the Wall Street Journal, there are six leadership styles, and each can affect a small business in different ways.  Affiliative leadership focuses on team work as an essential component. An affiliative leader will tend to emphasize open communication between staff members. This type of leadership can promote high employee morale and office harmony. Nevertheless, it may be unwise for a founder to use the affiliative leadership solely—the crux of this style involves group praise, which may allow mediocre or poor performances to go unchecked.  Coaching leadership, stressing a one-on-one approach for the founder and each employee, provides each member of a small business with guidance on how to become an efficient and valuable member of the team. Employees who show the initiative to grow within their roles benefit most from coaching. However, the drawback to this leadership style is that the founder may seem to be micromanaging staff members, which can have a demoralizing effect.  Commanding leadership is very often used and seldom successful. With a commanding leader, a small business can suffer low employee morale and job satisfaction, and for good reason—the commanding leadership style concentrates only on criticism and never on praise. This is widely recognized as an ineffective and even harmful leadership style.  Democratic leadership, like affiliative leadership, emphasizes team work. A democratic founder will utilize each employee’s personal skills and knowledge in order to reach goals that everyone agrees upon. This particular leadership style can backfire in emergency situations, when the business must reach consensus on a quick decision and cannot do so.  Pacesetting leadership, wherein the founder works tirelessly and expects every other employee to do the same, is another mostly ineffective leadership style. If the entire staff of a small business is pushed to work harder and better every day, low morale and a feeling of failure can pervade the office environment.

A visionary founder can find a new path for the company if it’s failing under the status quo. Under this brand of leadership, with an emphasis on a goal but not the exact ways to reach that goal, employees enjoy the freedom to be more innovative, experimental, and apt to take reasonable risks.
