Hertfordshire Mountaineering Club:  Hertfordshire Mountaineering Club Members Questionnaire Results 2005 HMC Questionnaire:  HMC Questionnaire Why? To check that Club is meeting member requirements To see if any improvements could be made To generate new ideas Completion Rate: 40% of total membership; but 99% completed by the active membership Make-up of those surveyed:  Make-up of those surveyed Gender: Males 74% Female 26% Age Groups How and Why people joined the HMC and how long they stay:  How and Why people joined the HMC and how long they stay How members found out about club? Website 43% Friend 28% Another Member 6% Don’t Remember 8% Why do people join? Most joined because they wanted to either Continue existing activities 35% or Participate in the activities offered by the club 35%. Some even simply wanted to: Improve their social life 7% or just didn’t want the hassle of planning their own weekends but like the fact HMC offered Organised weekends 7%. Sadly only 4% joined because they wanted to climb. Activities enjoyed by members:  Activities enjoyed by members Favourite activities: Rock Climbing 33% Hill walking grass 33% Scottish Winters/Alps 15% Mountain Biking 7% Hill walking snow 5% Scrambling 5% Skiing 3% Members mainly took part in Hill walking grass 23%, followed by Scrambling 15% then; Rock climbing, Hill walking snow and Mountain biking at 13% each. The favoured new activity that members would like to try was Scottish Winters 8%; closely followed by Rock climbing, mountain biking and Ice-climbing equally at 7%. Indoor Speakers:  Indoor Speakers Do we offer enough indoor meets? Just right 41% More speakers 38% Don’t attend 8% Don’t know 7% Less speakers 3% Would you like more training speakers? More 38% Just right 26% Don’t know 23% Would you pay extra for more well-known speakers? Yes 59% Don’t know 26% No 10% Conclusion: Keep number of indoor meets the same but book more well-known speakers or trainers. Outdoor Meets:  Outdoor Meets Most members liked the mix of meets 86% Did they received enough information about each meet…Yes: 72% So what was the preferred destination for meets… Don’t know 32%!!!!!!!! Snowdonia 24% Lakes 17% Peaks 13% Yorkshire 5% Cornwall 5% Brecon 2% Pembroke 2% Outdoor Meets continued…:  Outdoor Meets continued… Where would you like more meets? Lake district 19% (especially long weekends or alternative summer trip destination) Peak district 11% Yorkshire 11% Scotland 9% The club organises 1 to 2 week long trips…are these being supported? In the main: Yes 64%; but 36% have not been away with the club on long trips You said you wanted to go to: Spain*, Pyrenees*, New Zealand*, Andes, Patagonia, Alaska, Rockies, Scandinavia, Eastern Europe (although we cancelled this one due to lack of interest), South Africa, Cyprus/ Greece, Tetras, USA, Canada, Europe Overall, longer trips needed to use cheap airlines and would be decided on cost. Outdoor Meets: Changes you would like to see:  Outdoor Meets: Changes you would like to see Longer UK trips in summer (several comments) e.g. Lakes More Lakes trips with huts Summer trips to more “unusual” places Fixed two week period for summer trips More information on car lifts – use website Book meets using website Not Cornwall at Easter too early and too cold Fell running events Annual dinner in Lakes or North Wales More pre-organised activities Website:  Website How easy was the website to use? - Easy 46% What did you think of the information on the website? - Very useful 41% What did you want to see more of? Overwhelmingly - New photo’s Other improvements: Hints and Tips, Meets lists??? (these are already there), Discussion forums and Kit Lists Climbers:  Climbers 77% of members climb in some shape or format, either: Outdoor 73% Indoor 27% Do climbers receive enough information before meets? Yes 37% No 30% Don’t know 33% Climbers skills:  Climbers skills Series1:Second Series2: Lead General:  General Do you feel the club is run well? Yes 77% Don’t know 13% You thought the Committee did a good job at running the club & this was reflected in its growth: 90%: i.e helpful, approachable, pleasant, knowledgeable and contactable Size of Club: Just Right 79% Don’t know 13% Too Small 3% N/A 3% Other training facilities: such as; Plas Y Brenin, YHA, Glenmore Lodge (Scotland), Commercial organisations All 65%, Not YHA 16%, Not Glenmore 13%, Not Commercial 6% New Members – Did you receive a Welcome pack? Yes 50%, Don’t know 25%, Not sure 25% Improvements:  Improvements Members log area should allow members to send messages, rather than via member of Committee. Make everyone aware of the “Tidy up the Hut rule?” Minibus would be good: reduce number of vehicles taken to meets Update Next of Kin details Ability to look up member contact details – secure area Organise training meets/Organise professional training Someone on each trip responsible for write-up, with photo’s Circulate updated members list Don’t forget the climbers Encourage more experienced climbers rather than hordes of beginners Offer Club Leisure-wear New members representative/incorporate new members better Reps on Committee should be active, if standing More club bonding and merriment! Final Comments:  Final Comments Committee - Thanks for all your hard work. Encourage people to do mountaineering; after all, that’s what the club is about!
