Turning Points: Turning Points A Hutu Revolution in 1959, supported by the Belgians , forced as many as 300,000 Tutists to flee Rwanda , increasing the population . Under the cover of war , Hutu extremists launched their plans to destroy the entire Tutsi civilian population . An estimated 800,000 people mostly Tutists were slaughtered in a 100 days . Genocide Ending: Genocide Ending The genocide ended when the Tutsi dominated rebel movement , the Rwanda Patriotic Front, captured Kigali, overthrowing the Hutu government and ceasing power .
