His Gift:  His Gift Sacrificial Love:  Sacrificial Love Romans 5: 1-12;21 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Slide3:  And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces patience; And patience, perseverance; and perseverance, hope: And hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Ghost who was given to us. For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. Slide4:  For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet perhaps for a good man some would even dare to die. But God demonstrated His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Slide5:  Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. For if when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. And not only so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation. Slide6:  Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned- So that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord. Slide7:  Many of us know the 10 Commandments or have seen them hanging on a wall And that’s great! But Jesus gave us a New Commandment. One that doesn’t always get as much attention as the 10 commandments Slide8:  Jesus says in John 13:34 “A new commandment I give unto you, That you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.” Slide9:  To understand what Jesus wants and/or commands us to do... we first have to understand how Jesus loves us. Slide10:  The word “love” in that verse is the Greek word AGAPE. It’s a sacrificial type of love. It’s a love that is so strong that a person will sacrifice his own interests... to meet the needs of another. Slide11:  Jesus loves us so much... He was willing to give up the glories of Heaven and to come down here, endure the agony and shame of the cross... so that you and I would have the opportunity to live with Him. That’s Agape love! Slide12:  The beginning of the story About two best friends Albrecht Durer and Franz Knigstein #1 You Cannot Earn Your Way Into Heaven :  #1 You Cannot Earn Your Way Into Heaven Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God (Romans 5:1-2) Slide14:  You and I cannot gain peace with God. We need someone to pay our sin debt. Since we can’t buy it...it has to be a gift. Jesus did that for us! Jesus told the Samaritan woman at the well... Slide15:  John 4:10 “...If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked of Him, and He would have given you living water.” Slide16:  Ephesians 2:8-9 “For by grace you are saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God, Not of works, lest any man should boast. “ Slide17:  Ephesians 2: 13-18 But now in Christ Jesus you who were once far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation, having abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is, the law of commandments contained in ordinances; Slide18:  so as to create in Himself one new man from the two, thus making peace, and that he might reconcile both to God in one body through the cross, therefore putting to death the enmity. And He came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to those who were near. For through Him we both have access by one Spirit to the Father Slide19:  Colossians 1:19-22 For it pleased the Father that in Him should all fullness should dwell, and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things in earth, or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross. And you, who once were alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now He has reconciled in the body of His flesh through death, to present you holy and blameless and above reproach in His sight Slide20:  Colossians 2:13-14 And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. Slide21:  Titus 3:3-7 For we ourselves also were once foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving various lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another. But when the kindness and love of God our Savior toward man appeared, not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost, whom He poured on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior, that having been justified by His grace, we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. Slide22:  We can go to heaven free of charge. Jesus gave us the best gift ever. His amazing grace made it possible. Jesus paid it all. That’s because Jesus loves us! Slide23:  But the story goes on… #2 LIFE IS A STRUGGLE:  #2 LIFE IS A STRUGGLE Romans 5: 3-4 “...we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces patience, and patience, perseverance; and perseverance, hope.” Slide25:  Hebrews 10:24-25 says: “And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more, as you see the Day approaching.” Slide26:  1 Peter 5:8 says: “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, walks about as a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour” Slide27:  James 5: 14-16 “Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up, and if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. Confess your trespasses one to another, and pray one for another, that you may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much “ Slide28:  We encourage one another with our words and actions of support. We strengthen one another as we stand together... and as we pray for one another. Those who choose to separate themselves from us... are easy prey for the devil. Slide29:  We need people in our lives, just like Albrecht needed Franz #3 We Need To Appreciate What God/Jesus Did For Us :  #3 We Need To Appreciate What God/Jesus Did For Us Romans 5:7-8 “For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet perhaps for a good man some would even dare to die. But God demonstrated His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Slide31:  We take for granted what Jesus did for us! We come to church... but our faces look like we were going to the dentist! Slide32:  We approach our Christians duties with little or no dedication. We put money in the collection basket... but do we give freely and sacrificially? Slide33:  Folks, Jesus died for us! Do we appreciate it? Slide34:  Do you appreciate what Jesus did for you? If you do...show it! Worship Him with enthusiasm and sincerity! Serve Him by living a life that’s in obedience to His Word. Slide35:  What about Albrecht Durer? Did he appreciate what Franz Knigstein did? #4 God/Jesus Were Willing To Make A Sacrifice So That We Could Have A Good Life :  #4 God/Jesus Were Willing To Make A Sacrifice So That We Could Have A Good Life Romans 5:9-11 “Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. For if when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. And not only so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.” Slide37:  What do I mean by “a good life”? I’m talking about “eternal life”. Jesus gave His life on the cross… So that we could live forever. Slide38:  Jesus said in John 10:28 “And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.” Slide39:  If you know, having accepted and having put on Jesus Christ as your personal Savior in the grave of baptism… He carries you in the palm of His nail scarred hands. Slide40:  What about Albert and Franz? How does their story end? Slide42:  What tribute have you given to Jesus? How are you showing your appreciation for what He did? Slide43:  Now most all of this sermon has been based around the sacrifice of Jesus… But what of the sacrificial gift of the Father for us? Had it not been for His master plan none of this would have come into play? What of the millions of people who go about their lives unaware of what God through Christ has done for us? Slide44:  In the next slide you will see a visualization of a very familiar story that truly brings home the point of the Sacrificial Gift Slide46:  How many people go by unaware of the sacrifice that had been made for them both on the part of the Father and the Son? How many people will never know what was done for them? How would their lives change if they did know? Slide47:  There is nothing we can do to earn our way into heaven. Life and the path to heaven isn’t easy…it’s a struggle. Therefore, we need to appreciate what God and Jesus did for us! Both were willing to make a sacrifice so that we can have a good life, both now but ultimately in heaven with Them.
