Heavy-duty applications of tungsten carbide burrs: Heavy-duty applications of tungsten carbide burrs Burrs are also known as rotary files are small cutting tools used in rotary tools, die grinders, dental drills etc. The burrs with their small sized head (about 3mm diameter shaft) can be compared to a bur or their teeth can be compared to a metal bur. Burrs cut linearly and can be comparable to end mills and to router bits. The tungsten carbide burrs allows the burrs to run at higher speeds than similar HSS (High-speed steel) cutters but still maintaining their cutting edges. These tungsten carbide burrs comes in various shapes and sizes with different cuts and varied speed ranges.   The different ranges in which tungsten carbide burrs that are available include Miniature Range, Micro Range, Long Shank Range, Coated Range, Router Range, Extra Cut Range, Burrs sets etc. These burrs are also available in standard cut as well as special cut types. Under Standard Cut types, there is Double Cut for general-purpose use that improves control and reduces chips, Standard cut for general applications, and Fast Mill cut for rapid stock removal of softer non-ferrous materials including plastics. PowerPoint Presentation: The Special Cut types of tungsten carbide burrs are in the following types such as – Coarse cut for metal removal and finishing applications on non-ferrous metal alloys. Fine cut for improved finish on all ferrous metals. Foundry cut for maximum stock removal, rough edges and for foundry applications. Diamond cut for hardest materials and best finishes. Chip breaker cut for fast stock removal that improves control and surface finish. Fast Mill cut with chip breaker for rapid stock removal. There are recommended speeds set for standard length burrs with 13mm maximum overhang are about 35,000 rpm. In case the burrs are chipping easily this may be due to the speed being too slow. However, it is ideal to start the burr off slow and then increasing their speed within the course of time. High speeds would prevent the clogging in flutes of the burrs. The burrs should be kept on move, as this will prevent the bur from digging and jabbing into the material causing unsightly marks and roughness. Ending on an ‘up’ stroke for smoother finish is recommended. The burrs must be operated within the recommended speed guide sent by the manufacturer. Selecting an appropriate shape, diameter, cut style for the application is advisable.
