SOURCE:  SOURCE Shakespeare's main source is believed to be an earlier play— now lost— known today as the Ur-Hamlet. MAIN CHARACTERS:  MAIN CHARACTERS HAMLET CLAUDIUS HORATIO GERTRUDE POLONIUS FORTINBRAS LAERTES OPHELIA FRANCISCO REYNALDO THE GHOST MARCELLUS AND BERNARDO ROSENCRANTZ, GUILDENSTERN PLOT:  PLOT Hamlet is the son of the late king Hamlet (who dies about two months before the play starts). After his father dies, his brother Claudius becomes king and marries the queen of Denmark, Gertrude. Hamlet dreads that Claudius killed his own brother, King Hamlet, to be the king of Denmark, which terribly angers him. Two officers of the king, Marcellus and Bernardo beckon Hamlet's friend, Horatio, and later Hamlet himself to see the late King Hamlet's ghost appear at midnight. Privately, the ghost tells Hamlet that Claudius really did kill him by pouring poison into his ear while he was sleeping. Hamlet gets angry and devises a plan to revenge against Claudius. COMMENTARY:  COMMENTARY Hamlet is perhaps the closest of Shakespeare’s tragedies to modern sensibility. Its hero’s doubt and indecisions are familiar to modern man, equally tormented by a lack of certainties and the inability to communicate. As the Romantic critic August W. von Schlegel noted, Hamlet is the tragedy of will: in it, thought kills action. Hamlet’s indecision must be placed against the background of the revenge tragedy, a very popular genre at the time. According to its conventions, Hamlet should have sought revenge with all his force and as soon as possible. But he does not do so. He is full of hesitation. THEMES:  THEMES IMPOSSIBILITY OF CERTAINTY COMPLEXITY OF ACTION MISTERY OF DEATH NATION AS A DISEASED BODY REVENGE CLASS ISSUES LOVE MOTIFS:  MOTIFS INCEST AND INCESTUOUS DESIRE EARS AND HEARING MISOGYNY SYMBOLS:  SYMBOLS YORICK’S SKULL MEANINGFUL EXCERPTS:  MEANINGFUL EXCERPTS To be, or not to be- that is the question: Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune Or to take arms against a sea of troubles And by opposing end them… COMMENTARY:  COMMENTARY The central dilemma of the passage -summed up in the famous phrase “ To be, or not to be”- seems to be the choice between action and inaction. This is generally taken to relate to Hamlet’s incapacity to carry out the revenge on his uncle that his father’s ghost has asked of him. But there is more than a personal practical dilemma involved. Two philosophical positions, unreconciled in Hamlet’s monologue, are expressed in the first five lines: one is the Stoic attitude of enduring life’s evil and misfortune at all costs and to the end; the other is the belief that, if necessary, man may end life with suicide. In both cases, however, life is seen as a battle ( “slings and arrow”, “to take arms”). Hamlet’s choice of words and images shows his profound pessimism.
