 The Celts lived in Europe and in the British Isles, and believed that the souls of the dead visited Earth on the last day of October. They had a festival in honor of this and they called it Samhain.  When the Roman Empire conquered the Celts, they combined the Samhain with their own festivals and spread far and wide.

 In the 8th Century, the Catholic Church declared November 1 to be All Saints' Day and was called Allhallowmas. The night before then shortened to what we now call it Halloween.  The reason for that the people nowadays dress up with horror costumes is because in the past people believed that if they appeared scary, they would scare away the spirits.

 Jack-o-lanterns They are pumpkins with faces and with a candle inside that we use to frighten away witches and ghosts.

 Fire In the past, the people lit bonfires to scare away evil spirits because they believed that light had power over darkness.

 Dressing up People dress up with costumes on Halloween  Trick or treat Many parts of England still recognize Halloween as Michef Night. The children go home to home saying trick or treat to obtain sweets or money.

 Nuts. At Halloween, nuts were used as magic charms.

Apples.  If you slice an apple through the equator and then eat it by candlelight before a mirror, your future spouse will appear over your shoulder.  Peel an apple and then throw it over your shoulder. The shape it lands in will be the initial of your beloved.  If you place an apple under your pillow you will dream with your future husband.  In Scotland, the apples represent death. They hang apples on their doors and the people say that if you touch the apples, you will die the following year.

 Candles: Take a candle and look into a mirror whilst combing your hair or eating an apple. Your future husband will appear peeking over your shoulder.
