Good News for Nigeria Walter Smith Missionary to Nigeria P.O. Box 46 Otta, Ogun State, Nigeria Judy Catron 1118 Main Street New Castle, IN 47362 “For we do not preach ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake.” II Corinthians 4:5 February 2014 As our Bible College students begin the new semester we, on behalf of the school, pray to the Lord of the Harvest that our students will have the magnificent obsession for preaching the Gospel. Join us by making that your prayer too. An attentive audience at Ajere Church of Christ. This growing church has a bigger new building, but it needs a roof. The building was built by the local Christians without outside help. Our help to roof it would be a big encouragement to this lively congregation. Our Mission As a preacher I am obsessed to communicate the Word of God. My concern increasingly is to say less and communicate more. Telling the Old, Old Story. David L. Larsen Please take note that we have changed the address to which your checks are to be sent. Eddie’s sister, Betty Hafey, has served as Forwarding Agent exceptionally well for several years. She has decided to step out of that position. The new forwarding agent is Don and Marianne Baughman’s daughter, Judy Catron. The new address appears at the top and bottom of this newsletter. Thank you. With capable leaders the Ajere children and youth receive good training. We visited the church on the day their children presented a well organized program. Keeping Our Eyes On The Goal “The harvest is plentiful but the laborers are few.” These words were never truer than when spoken about Africa’s supergiant city, Lagos. It is with the need of Lagos for the gospel in mind that we continue to serve the Lord through evangelism, Christian nurture, and servant leadership training in Lagos. We appreciate your support for this ministry especially support for the Christian Memorial Medical Centre and WACM Bible College. Keep these two efforts in mind while we tell you of another challenge. Dan Wagner’s Challenge to Us Dan is the preacher at Homosassa Springs, Florida. He is retired from the U.S. Air Force where he was a Lieutenant Colonel and is a member of the board of West Africa Christian Mission. He visited Walter in Nigeria for a little over two weeks traveling to Cross River State with and holding a preaching seminar for students of WACM Bible College and visitors. Dan preached for some time at Walter’s home church the Butler (Indiana) Church of Christ. The Smiths got to know Dan while he was a student at Lincoln Christian Seminary where he received his M.div. Degree. Dan’s challenge is for the supporters of WACM to contribute $25,000.00 (Twenty-five thousand dollars) to roof the already constructed building of the Ajere ward Church of Christ in Ekori, Cross River State ($15,000) and buy a van for the Appiapum Church of Christ ($10,000) to assist this forward looking congregation in planting churches and encouraging the new churches they have already started. To read the letter Dan wrote following his trip to Nigeria in November 2013 go to Cross River State is a rugged two day journey overland from Lagos and Walter cannot be there often because of the demands of the work in Lagos. The leaders in Cross River State do well and the $25,000.00 offering would do much to encourage them and assist them to produce even more fruit for the master. So far a little less than $2,000 has been given for this offering. Dan Wagner concludes his letter thus: “Please give! Send a check made out to “West Africa Christian Mission” with “Cross River Special Offering” in the memo line to Judy Catron, Forwarding Agent; West Africa Christian Mission; 1118 S. Main Street, New Castle, IN 47362. “Please remember - this is important...this offering is above and beyond what you normally give to your church or to any mission you have committed to support. Please do not take money away from the general offerings you give to them (or to West Africa Christian Mission, for our regular supporters!) If we can find 500 people to send $50 each - we’ll have this done!!” This picture gives some idea of the overcrowded conditions at Ajere Church of Christ in Ekori, Cross River State. The elders of the Appiapum church of Christ. These forward looking leaders encourage and help Ernest and Lawrence in planting churches and encouraging the preachers of the newly planted churches. A van would greatly assist them in their work. Paul Akapo from Lagos is standing to the right of this picture with Lawrence Ebak to his left at the far right. Dan Wagner and some of the people who attended his preaching seminar. Dan came from Florida to the Mission board meeting in Indiana so he could encourage the other board members in the matter of raising the money to help the two churches in Cross River State.

Good News for Nigeria West Africa Christian Mission The News and Prayer Letter of Walter Smith, Missionary to Nigeria Mission Services 2004 E. Magnolia Ave. Knoxville, TN 37917 Non Profit Org. U.S. Postage Paid Knoxville, TN Permit #374 Return Service Requested Dan preached at the Sango church of Christ. Sango is a bedroom community for people who work in Lagos. Sango is part of greater Lagos. Sports day at the Christian School in Appiapum. The children have chosen an elevated vantage point so they can view the action. Nigerian parents highly value education for their children. The school helps the church reach people who might otherwise be unreachable. Egbe John Egbe and Ernest Ebak grew up attending the youth programs of the upper Cross River Churches of Christ. They are both active in evangelism and training servant leaders for the churches. Gbenga Kayode Smith studied music in the U.S. He plays the organ keyboard for special programs for WACM Bible College. Gbenga and Walter share their birthday with Oprah Winfrey. They were not all born in the same year. Ebenezer Onipede baptizing a lady from his congregation.Ebenezer preaches at the Sango Church of Christ. Prayer and Praise The Blessing of Giving Last month’s GNfN carried a picture of Ernest with his lovely wife, Rita. In December Rita became ill with appendicitis. She had her appendix removed and is in the healing process. Please pray that her recovery will be complete. Rita is still working to complete her baccalaureate degree at the University of Cross River State. Correction: In the last issue we reported that Ernest is working on a Masters Degree. The degree is in Old Testament Exegesis not in Linguistics as we reported back then. We are thankful that you have learned the joy of giving and that you regularly give to support the work of preaching the gospel in Nigeria. You are often in our prayers. We are in need of additional funds to make up for reduced giving from long-time contributors. New contributors are needed to make up for those who have died or for one reason or another cannot continue to give. If you can give to the Cross River State projects without slighting your regular giving please do so. Our new Forwarding Agent is Judy Catron, 1118 S. Main Street, New Castle, IN 47362. Thank you. --Walter C. Smith
