2. More and more people are into scuba diving these days, praising the activity for its numerous health benefits. And they wouldn‟t be wrong — scuba diving, for one, facilitates a full-body workout. Swimming on the surface alone offers enough tension to train every inch of the body; one can only imagine how much more work needs to be done when fully submerged. But, perhaps the greatest health benefit that scuba divers reap is not a full- body workout, but the habit of deep, controlled breathing. Deep Breathing in Scuba Diving Scuba tanks only provide a limited amount of air, so divers are trained from the very start to breathe slowly and deliberately. Its main purpose in diving is to optimise air consumption and maximise bottom time. Over time, divers develop a habit out of this training exercise, which in turn, improves their overall well-being. Still, the question is how? Deep Breathing and Relaxation It‟s easy to come up with scenarios where deliberate breathing exercises are the norm, apart from scuba diving. Yoga classes, the Lamaze method of breathing for women in child labour — the list goes on and on. Relaxation is the main reason deliberate breathing is important for these activities. There‟s also the notion of breathlessness when people feel anxious and trapped.

3. Understanding the health effects of deep breathing lies in one concept. There‟s always enough oxygen available for everyone, and it‟s in a reserve of air in the lungs. The connection between improved health and deep breathing is due to the availability of carbon dioxide in the blood. Oxygen is carried throughout the body by red blood cells, but they can‟t be used if there‟s not enough carbon dioxide. CO2 is responsible for “freeing” the oxygen from their bond with red blood cells. Now, how does this relate to deep breathing and better health? During fits of heavy breathing (i.e. huffing and puffing, hyperventilation), the body releases too much CO2, which prevents the cells from getting enough oxygen. This type of breathing is wrong since it involves overworking the diaphragm. Breathing with a relaxed diaphragm, aka „belly breathing‟, requires little physical effort and allows the correct mixture of carbon dioxide and oxygen to occur. This, in turn, allows the body to better utilize oxygen. Deep Breathing + Diving = General Wellness Deep breathing and scuba diving should always go hand in hand for maximum effect. It‟s easy to explain why scuba divers feel rejuvenated and at peace while submerged. It‟s the perfect marriage of deliberate breathing and the almost-therapeutic effects of water.

4. Deep breathing releases endorphins, which are known as „feel-good‟ hormones. These hormones act as natural painkillers, alleviating whatever minute ills are plaguing the body. This is then combined with the supposed healing effects of water, which naturally triggers the body‟s ability to relax. For a body to facilitate its natural healing processes, it needs to be relaxed. Hearing scuba divers say they feel rejuvenated and relaxed during and after a dive makes much more sense, since water is essentially a life-giving element. It‟s literally the first thing that held people in the womb. In other words, humans have been around and felt safe with water before they were even born. So, should everyone go scuba diving for health? It‟s a no-brainer, since science says so.
