Slide1:  Earth Health? OR Earth Hype? Although scientist don’t all agree, it's possible that we are too late to reverse the course we are on. A course that may have catastrophic consequences. If we wait to convert those scientists who disagree we will definitely doom future generations to a calamity not of their making. Is the earth really getting hotter? :  Is the earth really getting hotter? Over the past 50 years the average global temperature has increased at the fastest rate in recorded history. The 10 hottest years on record have all occurred since 1990. Scientists say that unless we curb global warming emissions,(C02) average U.S. temperatures could be 3 to 9 degrees higher by YEAR 2100. Yes! What causes global warming?:  What causes global warming? Carbon dioxide & other air pollution is collecting in the atmosphere like a thickening blanket. It traps the sun's heat and causes the planet to warm up. Coal-burning power plants are the largest U.S. source of carbon dioxide pollution. They produce 2.5 billion tons every year. Are warmer temperatures the cause of the changing weather conditions?:  Are warmer temperatures the cause of the changing weather conditions? Global warming is already causing damage in many parts of the U.S. Wild fires Drought Hurricanes & Tropical Storms Snow accumulation declining Polar Ice Cap declining a 9% every 10 years. Are warmer temperatures the cause of the changing weather conditions?:  Are warmer temperatures the cause of the changing weather conditions? Global warming doesn't create hurricanes, but it does make them stronger and more dangerous. Because the ocean is getting warmer, tropical storms can pick up more energy and become more powerful. So global warming could turn, say, a category 3 storm into a much more dangerous category 4 storm. In fact, scientists have found that the destructive potential of hurricanes has greatly increased along with ocean temperature over the past 35 years. Incentives? :  Incentives? What’s in it for them? What’s in it for us? What’s in it for me? WIFT? WIFU? WIFM? HUH? ALL GOOD QUESTIONS! Who are “them” anyway?:  Who are “them” anyway? The “Incentive Givers” are the institutions that actually benefit more by what they get than what they give. Aka…There is no “free lunch” The Federal Government The State Governments The local power companies (i.e.: Progress Energy, FL & NC.) What’s in it for the “Incentive Givers”?:  What’s in it for the “Incentive Givers”? Or Why do power reduction incentives exist today? Demand for excess power is Not 24/7. “Demand Management” & “Sustainable Practices” (New Buzz words) Consumer pressure over environmental issues. Regulatory commissions force their hand in goals of power companies.
