Outcome feasibility study (May 2004): other industries in Ghana face the same problems. Current Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in Ghana does not fulfil the demand of training of the industries, especially not in new technologies. In particular, Ghanaian factories currently face a problem with downtime of machinery because the necessary problem-solving skills are not available among the local workforce. Industries set up in-house training programs. Objective of the project:  Objective of the project Establishing a tailor-made department that will fulfil: the vocational training requirements of the industries in Ghana. Create the avenues where the unemployed youth would be given employable industrial skills Offer the opportunity for companies to train their employees and to improve the hands-on skills capability of local workers on a part-time/ fulltime basis. Barry Callebaut Interbeton Cocoa Processing Company Tropical Cable Conducter Ltd/ Ghana Agro-Food Company Accra Brewery Limited (ABL). Guinness Ghana Breweries Limited (Diageo/ Heineken) Cargill Ghana Limited Decision making process:  Decision making process Steering committee; Dutch Ministry, Ghanaian Ministry, TTI etc. Board of GISDC consisting of Ministry of Education in Ghana, Operations Manager GISDC and a majority coming from the industries Operations Manager Towards Millennium Development Goals & the GPRSP:  Towards Millennium Development Goals & the GPRSP Amount of 30,000 euros set aside to train Youth in employable skills Community to benefit from the initiative Provision of decent and productive work Youth unemployment is reduced Poverty reduced Youth training/employment:  Youth training/employment GISDC in Collaboration with YES-Ghana Youth Employment Education and capacity building Demand driven-training Engage the disadvantaged Youth through the GISDC Social Support Programme (SSP) Upgrade Skills of Youth for gainful employment Criteria for Youth Training :  Criteria for Youth Training Selection of beneficiaries is based on: Demonstrated need for support Demonstrated qualification for the training Demonstrated capability and availability to undertake the training Demonstrated career aspirations in the chosen sector Curriculum Development:  Curriculum Development Curriculum developed by Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA-UK) in consultation with industries Technical: mechanical, electrical & process engineering Key Skills: H&S, ICT, communication & team working Short courses (1 week of 40hrs ) Partnership with KACE-AITCE to develop IT skills for the youth Outcomes and impact achieved so far:  Outcomes and impact achieved so far Initial trainee commitment forms sent out to industry and Yes-Ghana In talks with the Government (Min of Industry, Trade & PSI for sponsorship of youth selected for training by Yes-Ghana Rep from National Youth Employment Program & Min of Labour, Youth & Employment to be on the GISDC Board Example curriculum:  Example curriculum All courses approximately take one week; school fees is €250,(@ current exchange rate - per course. Training starts in June 2008 Certificates will be accepted by being a satellite school from the Scottish Qualification Authority (SQA) for now: Ghanaian accreditation is also being sort Conclusion:  Conclusion The GISDC is a unique centre where public and private partners develop demand driven technical skills to meet the manpower needs of industry for a sustainable development.
