Getting started in SEORight Keyword Choice and On Page/ On Site OptimizationFor Rock Star IndexationDownload complete SEO checklist in PDF from:http://webmeup.com/getting-started.html

What does Google eat for breakfast?Juicy, spicy, savory and highly competitivekeywords… and a croissant.

Keyword Search Tips:a) Length of keyphrases✓ make sure your keyword list includes 2-4 wordphrases✓ a single keyword may be too generic (e.g., "cars")✓ a phrase too long may attract little or no traffic(e.g., "where to buy a red ford with white doors inSeattle").

b) Keywords with higher KEI, the searches to competition ratio.✓ the higher KEI, the better (i.e. a lot of people are searching forthis keyword, but theres no huge competition among websites)✓ you should look at the numbers as relative values inside aniche. There is no good or bad KEI - so you should only compareone keyword against another.✓you will need to choose phrases with low KEI as its still a littlebit higher than the KEI of other words in the group in some cases(e.g., with low search volume key phrases)

Googlebot is blindYou would want to know how many pages are indexed in Google, Bing andYahoo! Search engines. If the number of indexed pages is smaller than the actualnumber of pages, you may have an accessibility issue. And then Googlebot will not bethat gentle to you.

The greatest mistake every newbie makes is…Don’t be a looser and care about your website accessibility

Website Accessibility Tips:a) Revise robots.txtMake sure that important content isnot blocked by✓the robots.txt file in the rootdirectory✓the "noindex" tag in the <head>section of pages✓ the X-Robots-Tag in the HTTPheaderCreate and submit a Sitemap to make sure thatsearch engines know about all thepages on your site. You can submit yoursitemap in Google Webmaster Tools and BingWebmaster Tools (for Bing and Yahoo).b) Create and upload an XML sitemap

c) Fix HTTP server response codesIf some of your pages return errors(404 "not found" error, 500 "internalserver" error, or any other 4xx and5xx errors), you should fix theseissues and have the server configuredproperly.Website Accessibility Tips:

d) Set the redirect to the main domainversionSearch engines see www and non-wwwversions of the same page as 2 differentpages:Website Accessibility Tips:✓ To prevent the duplicate contentissue, set the main domain version foryour website using the redirect methodthat works best for your website (e.g. theApache mod_rewrite module).✓ To get the best keyword rankingresults from your campaign, choosethe version that Google displays foryour website in its search results.

Website Accessibility Tips:e) Check content for Flash andFramesSEs are not that good at indexing Flashand frames even though they work hardon this, help them find your site:✓ Do not put important or all contentinto Flash and frames.✓ Add text transcripts to the contentthat is used in Flash and frames.

Website Accessibility Tips:f) Fix spam issues✓ Cloaking — the content presentedto the search engine spider is differentfrom that presented to the usersbrowser✓ Viruses — any type of malwareprograms✓ Doorway — a web page that iscreated with the only purpose ofsending visitors to a different page✓ Link farm — any group of web sitesthat all hyperlink to every other site inthe group.

Website Accessibility Tips:g) Use 2-3 level hierarchy for site navigationIdeally, all of your content should be not morethan 2-3 clicks away from the homepage.Exceptions may be made for a website withtons of content.h) Make URLs staticDynamic URLs are not user- and searchengine-friendly Review your site URLs:✓ Dynamic URLs look like thishttp://site.com/product.php?cid=1&pid=5✓ Static URLs look like thishttp://site.com/product/guide.html

Website Accessibility Tips:i) Fix too long URLsOptimize the length of the URLs thatare too long making it around 75symbolsj) Make URLs descriptiveUse keywords in the URLs of thepages you are optimizing to makethem more relevant and enhancerankings.

Website Accessibility Tips:k) Create a custom 404 pageCustomize a 404 page to make it useful foryour website visitors. It may also includelinks to the most important pages of yourwebsite.See an example on the WebMeUp site:http://webmeup.com/404.htmll) Fix broken linksBroken links hinder usability and can causetraffic losses and need to be fixed:✓ correct the invalid link URLs✓set 301 redirects

Code Your Way To The TopMake sure your pages HTML and CSS code is error-free. Not all errors arecritical for rankings, but its hard to guess which one makes a site drag behindits competitors. The point here is, if therere code errors, this may prevent Google fromindexing your pages and ranking your important content. Therefore its bestto check the sites code for errors.

Code/ Performance Tips:a) Make your page code valid (W3CHTML/CSS errors)The standards for webpage coding are definedby the organization called W3C (WorldWide Web Consortium) and they provide freeservice to validate your pages. Please take a few minutes to go to W3CValidator at http://validator.w3.org/ and checkyour HTML and CSS code for possible errors.

b) Specify doctypeCode/ Performance Tips:Specify the page doctype (the HTML type used,e.g. HTML5, XHTML 1.0 Strict, etc.), asthis information is required by some toolsprocessing the document, such as markupvalidators.c) Specify character encodingTo make sure that your pages are properlyrendered by browsers, specify after theopening <head> tag what character set yourwebsite uses (e.g. UTF-8, US-ASCII, etc.).

Code/ Performance Tips:d) Improve page load speed✓ apply the file compression (e.g.gzip)✓ utilize browser caching✓ use the externalizedCSS/JavaScript code✓ optimize graphics and video size✓ put the scripts at the bottom✓ minimize the number of iframes✓ use a Content Delivery Network(CDN) to lighten the load on yourserver, and more.* It may of course take different time for a page to load, depending onthe speed of Internet connection and other factors. Thereforesometimes it makes sense to look at page size rather than load time.

On average, if it takes a page more than 3 seconds to load, thespeed is considered slow and the page is heavy. Of course forcertain niches (ex. gaming) heavy pages are almost unavoidable. Inthis case, it makes sense to compare your pages size to yourcompetitors.
